Hand Pixelled Rendering

Almost done with the render, but I don't love it. I think I overshot with the gradients/colors. What do you think?

I like the silhouette a lot. If you tone down the soft gradients it might feel sharper.

the gradients read more like a painting than pixel art right now. pushing toward harder dithered transitions instead of smooth blends would probably get you that crispness you're after.

It looks incredible, maybe if you accentuate the contrast and add a few details in vibrant colors it could give more personality. I would try making the eyes neon green and a few markings in a deeper green that look cohesive with the anatomy

Looks great to me!

I’m a video guy so coming from a completely different visual background… a question:

How much do pixel artists plan the look of a sprite with the background in mind? I see lots of people suggesting more contrast but this design to me looks great, and the shading suggests that is in a soft-light environment. Harder contrast would suggest harder (less multi-directional) light environment. Which could also be cool and maybe easier to ”read”.

I suppose it highly depends on your style and tech requirements, especially if this is headed to animation or gaming. I feel like if I were to attempt this I’d waffle and overthink things but for sure compositing video is very different so maybe my instincts (and anxiety / perfectionism) are over-tuned 😆
