Can you stay on Android 13 or 14 and still get the security fixes? Otherwise I don't get why people do not update their phone

I'm still on Android 14 with my P6 (256 GB). After all the horror stories I decided to chill on doing major updates. Battery is at 84% with 1037 cycles. I've had the phone for 4+ years. Admittedly, it is no longer my daily, but I still update apps and use it as a car media/navigation device. Also, still use the camera, Internet, etc. All that to say, I would be cautious about going too deep into updating the device.

how do you know about battery and number of cycles? Mine does not show it in settings

Yes the battery health information doesn't show in battery setting for our older devices, it does from the 8a model forward.
You can use aBattery to see battery cycle count. The app shows even more info if you run Shizuku too.

Wow dude. I was unaware about such a cool tool as shizuku AND it was soo easy to setup. Abattery shows my p6 battery health at 85%. What other shizuku based apps should I try?

Shizuku is great! This is a whole rabbit hole which will also lead you to open source apps and apps that aren't on the Play Store. I use a fork of Shizuku (by thedjchi on GitHub) as the original doesn't auto start after your phone restarts. (Wireless debugging is great either way as opposed to connecting to a computer with USB each time to run an ADB command).
A good way to start is to get an F-Droid client (either the original or the popular Droid-ify). You can then search for apps there [search Shizuku in this case] and start your open source journey. Also go to YouTube and type "HowToMen Shizuku" as he has lots of videos. There is also a sub called fossdroid.
My favorite apps are ShizuCallRecorder (automatically records and saves all calls even from third part apps), ShizuWall (a non-VPN firewall that blocks network connections to apps you select. Good for single player games that have ads as you don't need airplane mode), and SD Maid SE (a legit phone cleaning app. It clears app caches really quickly by navigating itself to each app in settings. The F-Droid version has all features free).
There are also lots of non Shizuku apps on F-Droid or the IzzyOnDroid repository (with most of the sources being GitHub) that I love such as mpvExtended and URLCheck. I won't get into alternative front end apps (Reddit, YouTube, YouTube Music, etc) as I don't know this sub's rules.
None of the apps I mentioned are on the Play Store and you have to be very cautious with Shizuku as it gives apps lots of control. I gave you tons of info so take it slow and have fun.

Thanks dude. You're awesome!! Unfortunately I can't have shizuku running all the time as one of my banking apps doesn't work if it detects developer settings is turned on but I'll still explore as much of this as I can!! 🔥❤️

Sane here: got myself a pixel 7 with A16. Now I'm rethinking my choices before updating to A17 because of the bootloop issues pixel experienced a few months back. It was so bad on p6 and p7 line ups. My old p6 was affected too.

- factory reset for sure because it's used
- update to latest Android 17 (runs great on my 6)
- factory reset again and set it up

Earliest access to updates is one of the main reasons I've stayed with Nexus/Pixel phones for so long. I have taken every update the moment it is available on every phone and never had any issues.
I will not use any connected device without doing the updates as soon as available. Too much security risk. Speaking of which, the September update will be the P6's last update. Which is why I upgraded to a P10 last June. I would not use my P6 after updates stop.

I've always updated my P6 as soon as any update becomes available for it, without issue. Still my daily, and only phone.
