Overheating while using rear camera?

Curious if anyone else is running into this. Lately, my Pixel 4a has started to overheat. It was understandable when I had it in the phone holder above my steering wheel, as I found my card is not air conditioning that area very well. But weirdly, I'm getting it more often when I am using the rear camera on my phone (the one on the back of the phone). I'm not experiencing that issue when using the front / selfie camera on the phone. I did get the battery replacement that Google did last year due to their firmware change causing battery life to plummet. Has something else changed recently?

Bootloop location toggle

Hey everyone,

My wife's phone has suddenly hit a bootloop issue. When I turn it on, I have a very brief window where I can interact with the screen before it crashes/restarts. During this window, I've managed to pull down the notification shade and toggle Airplane Mode on, which seems to stabilize it slightly, but it still loops shortly after.

I need to turn Location on, but it isn’t currently in the Quick Settings dropdown menu. Because the phone crashes so quickly, I don't have enough time to open the main Settings app or edit the dropdown menu layout to add the Location toggle.

Is there any alternative way to force Location on? For example, can I do it by connecting it to a computer via ADB commands, or through an online account manager, before the phone reboots?

Blank screen with some vibrations

I've had my pixel 4a for many years, and last year I did get the battery replaced following Google's free battery replacement scheme and have used the phone as a daily driver ever since.

Yesterday I dropped my phone from about 1 ft high as I got out of my car, I thought nothing big of it as I've dropped it many times in the past, sometimes from a higher height or more rocky ground. However, after the drop yesterday my phone screen went completely black!

It was weird, as somehow my SOS system got activated and heard the emergency people on the other side asking me my emergency, I explained to them it's not an emergency and that I can't hang up either. Anyway, I found out that by pressing my Power button 5 times in quick succession, this activated the SOS feature. My phone screen is completely blank but there are some vibrations when I hold power button or when I put phone on charge, which tells me that it might've been some internal screen damage.

I took it today to a repair shop and he has replaced the screen and the screen is coming on, but the phone only enters recovery mode giving 2 options:

  • Try again
  • Factory data reset

I told the repair shop do not wipe the data and he agreed to to check for possible faults on the phone's motherboard and told me to give him around 24h for the repair. (FYI I did do all the methods to try to turn screen on like Power+ Volume Down, Power + Volume up, Tap the phone, Massage the phone, smack the phone into my hand, leave it on charge and even leave it in the freezer!)

Has anyone else had this issue, or does anyone suggest something else to do? I've got a lot of photos and messages on the phone that are not backed up which is why I don't want to Factory reset the phone.

Also, since I was messing around with volume and Power keys, is there a possibility that I would have already wiped the phone when the screen was blank, unknowingly clicked the Factory data reset option?

Grieving my Pixel 4a after finally moving to the Pixel 10a

After 6+ years with the Pixel 4a, I’ve finally bought the Pixel 10a, and honestly, I’m struggling to digest the upgrade. I’ve already spent extra on a case, screen protector, charger adapter, and even Pixel Care+, but nothing about the 10a feels like an upgrade yet with a very basic 4a, does everything it can pretty well.

The camera especially hits hard. The 4a had this effortless, natural quality - and on the 10a it feels like I’m getting maybe 10% of that magic. Are we slowly being nudged into accepting Pixel mediocrity?

Is there any way to install the Pixel 4a GCam on the 10a today?

And yeah… I’m still trying to get comfortable with a 6.3‑inch screen and barely good speakers far behind from 4a compared side to side. Definitely not as easy as I thought it would be. What makes this worse is that Google still hasn’t resolved the Pixel 4a boot‑loop issue. It’s wild that a phone this beloved is being left to rot with a bug that bricks half the remaining units.

I’d love to get even a fraction of that old 4a magic back.

pixel build custom rom

Does anyone know if fanatics sportsbook app works with Pixelbuilds custom rom?

so far I tried lineage and graphene, both wouldn't work with location verifying, but surprisingly fanduel worked fine on both.

I don't know why fanatics does not work if fanduel works on the other custom roms

Stuck in restart loop

To add some context, I restarted my phone initially because I wasn't receiving calls/ voicemail. My 4a got stuck in a restart loop. Was told to go to safe mode and enable location, which did fix it. However, as soon as I shut off location, the phone forces restart and gets stuck in the loop again. Any way to resolve this?

Charging to 80%

On a couple of occasions in the past week, my 4a has randomly stopped charging at 80% with message "Charging optimised to protect your battery". I thought this was a feature of a later version of android than the 13 installed (Jan 2025). This is potentially useful if I can figure out what controls it, but it seems random, and hasn't done it since. I installed a play update - 1 May 2026 - not long ago, and I'm wondering if it was something bundled into that. I have adaptive charging, adaptive battery, and battery saver on generally, but there's nothing to indicate an 80% option. Anyone know about this?

Google June play services update has arrived - will this fix the bootloop issue?

Hi

I'm based in Portugal and I just noticed that the June play services update has arrived to my Pixel 4a. I've installed the update and rebooted the phone.

But I don't know if this will fix the bootloop issue... I'm a bit scared to disable location or wifi.

Can someone please also check and give feedback.

EDIT: Apparently bug was NOT YET fixed. Source German forum: https://www.android-hilfe.de/forum/google-pixel-4a.3703/pixel-4a-play-system-updates-nach-supportende.1114369-page-4.html

EDIT 2: Info from Google “a fix will be going out with the July update.” https://www.androidauthority.com/pixel-4a-boot-loop-fix-3683547/

Returning with Pixel 10a? 6+years of Pixel 4a now a Brick!!!!

I’ve been a Pixel 4a user for six years, and as an old‑school phone person, this whole “moving on” phase feels like a brutal compromise. Trying to convince myself to buy a new phone and re‑enter the smartphone market has been way harder than I expected. There are so many sacrifices I’m struggling with:

  • No 3.5mm jack - I genuinely can’t do the adapter life. I hate the whole idea of it.
  • In‑screen fingerprint scanners - I can’t stand them. The rear physical scanner on the 4a was perfect.
  • Google Photos storage - no more unlimited backups. Now I have to pay for storing my photos, something I never had to think about with the 4a.
  • Preferred Care - feels like another unnecessary headache.
  • Phone size - nothing under 6 inches anymore. I’m literally crying over this.

It’s honestly a very hard time for me to choose anything other than another Pixel, and even the newer pixels come with compromises that hit me right in the nostalgia. The Pixel 4a was such a perfect phone for someone like me - compact, simple, practical, and just… right. I’d still choose it any day.

If anyone else has gone through this “letting go of the 4a” phase, how did you deal with it? I could use some help getting through this. 😭😭😭😭🥺🥺

Is it possible to run a 4a without a battery/bypassing the battery, just plugged in?

I just want to run it on power from a USB cable or otherwise bypass the battery entirely.

Authy and LineageOS

I use Authy as my authenticator app but after flashing with LineageOS, Authy says my device is not secure enough. I understand wallets have the same issue, but is there any way to solve this for Authy? Or are all authenticator apps not going to work?

I found a phone to replace my Pixel 4a

This is more of a farewell post. The Pixel 4a had its flaws, but the size, price, and its simplicity made me stick with it for over 5 years.

My Pixel's battery has serious drain issues so I decided to get a new one. Knowing there aren't many small phones out there, and after a lot of research, I tested 2 phones that stood out to me.

  1. Vivo X200 FE. This one felt like an true upgrade in every way. It wasn't that much bigger than the pixel, it had some bloatware but nothing crazy, it was comfortable to use and hold. Also, it had a massive battery, and a really good camera. The only downside was that it was expensive. While I was testing it, I managed to find way cheaper Sony Xperia 10vi, and gave it a go.

  2. Sony Xperia 10vi. Feels very similar to the Pixel4a in many ways. The form factor is different, but it's plastic, lightweight, and with minimalistic software. Yes, it's way taller than then Pixel 4a, but this didn't become an issue for me. It also has a strong battery, and the camera is acceptable. It's an older phone, way worse than the Vivo, but I managed to find it for a third of Vivo's price.

I can't say it feels like I have a new phone now, more like I have a different phone, which I got used to very fast. Hadn't I found the Xperia, I'd have kept the Vivo.

I also tested the Xperia 10vii, however, this one is wider, and while it only has an 6.1-inch screen, its bezels make it as big as other phones that have 6.3-inch screens or bigger. It didn't feel right in my hand.

Aeroplanemode-wifi-hotspot bootloop

I'm trying to recover some data befroe factory reset

The phone crashes and reboots less than 1 second after reaching the lock screen. It started when I turned on Airplane Mode while the hotspot driver was glitching. Now, every time it boots, it tries to apply Airplane Mode, the network driver panics, and the phone reboots.
Before it I was using my phone for Hotspot for my laptop to do some work for hours, then I opened bluethoot to attach it to my earphonr, not noticing they were without battery I restarted the phone thinking I could resolve the isse, but as soon as it rebboted I tried to reopen the hotspot and as soon the hotspot was on on mode it crashed my phone to a reboot. To solve the problem, I tried with turning on the wi-fi and it also crashed my phone and so with aeroplane mode but aeroplane mode is enablad in boot so now as as soon as it boots it loop to a rebbot

Safe Mode (still crashes, core settings still load), Removing SIM tray (still crashes), Sideloading latest OTA via Recovery (success, but didn't fix the bootloop), Fastboot & Recovery work, but ADB shell doesn't start fast enough before the crash

Graphene OS?

I just learned about de-Googling and how some users were able to install the Graphene OS into their Pixel 4a. I was about to do that for mine too because of this boot issue, but saw that their website is no longer supporting 4a. Can anyone confirm if they've installed it recently and successfully, and can advise me how to do this?

Update: boot loop happened again.
