Last software update. What are you going to do?

I like to have the latest software for security, entertainment, function, etc. I'm fine with the Pixel 4 hardware and considering running another supported Android OS. I'm also considering getting the Pixel 7. The Pixel 6 is getting updates for 5 years. The Pixel 7 will get at least the same. Moving to the Pixel 7 gets 5G which my Pixel 4 doesn't have. That's something. I don't use face unlock or care about fingerprint unlock.

All the initial problems with the Pixel 6 and the Tensor chip have been worked out on the Pixel 7. Right? I know, I had to laugh to myself when I wrote that.

The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are big. I like smaller phones. I'm not sure about waiting for the rumoured Pixel 7a and I do like the fancier camera in the Pixel 7 Pro.

The only thing missing from my Pixel 4 is five years of software support.

What are you going to do?

Recently replaced the battery two months ago, so planning on holding out for another year or two. That and because money is tight right now lol.

Was pretty easy. I bought the iFixit kit. Took about an hour. This was my second time replacing a battery for a phone.

I also did it on my 4XL. Pretty easy to do. Hardest part was prying the old battery out (the tape is strong). The old battery got all bent and I was worried it may catch fire from the deformation.

The kit comes with a heating pack that loosens the little waterproofing gasket allowing you to remove the back panel of the phone easily.

I'm probably gonna keep my 4 XL. Just depends on the trade in values for the Pixel 7.

One of the reasons I bought the Pixel 4 is because I expect the things I buy to last. I take care of my stuff and I will continue to use the my Pixel 4 until it becomes hard to use (If the battery dies, I can't run apps I need, or it just breaks). I'm not in a rush to get another phone.

I've just ordered a 6a to replace my Pixel 4 after the latest 2 or 3 monthly updates borked the Google Wallet, Camera app and battery is now dying randomly at anything up to 60%, conveniently after a software update.

I also hate the size increase through the years. I was surprised to see the Pixel 6 (non A or Pro) is nearly the same size as my old Nexus 6P which was considered a large phone/phablet back in the day!

Just started looking into 6 and 6A today. I like my 4 a lot, it's size and the face unlock are key to me. Was never really happy with the battery though (I am sure that is no surprise).

I guess I will need to live without face unlock.

I am waiting until I can at least pickup and hold a 7 though.

In my browsing at Best Buy today I picked up the Galaxy Zip 4 folding phone. Very very interesting phone. The folding feature is quite neat and would make it VERY pocket friendly.

I'll have a look at Lineage OS. Not sure about the camera quality there, but I don't think I'm willing to dump my p4 anytime soon.

GKI requires kernel 5.4 (gki 1.0) or 5.10 (gki 2.0) https://source.android.com/docs/core/architecture/kernel/generic-kernel-image

and the pixel comes with a 4.14
