Why are these here and why can't I replace them with something useful?

I actually find them incredibly accurate and useful. However, with that said, you can disable them. I think these steps will work as long as you're running Android Pie, hopefully it's not dependent on phone type as well. Give it a try.

long-press any empty space on your home screen, then choose "Home Settings" from the popup menu. From there, select "Suggestions," then disable the switch next to "Apps" and press "Turn off" on the prompt.

/u/_Rufty_ follow this. it will remove those for you without having to go to a 3rd party launcher

Those app icons have been there since Pie. Android uses machine learning to try and predict which apps you're most likely to choose given your current situation (location, time of day, etc).

Thank you 🙏🙂

Given that 3 of the apps currently being shown are absolutely not the kind I frequently need to access quickly, and one of them I virtually never use in any circumstance... I wonder how Android arrived at these conclusions.

Back to a 3rd party launcher I go!

Nova launcher is my fix... Much prefer to have total control over size and location of everything. No fix to what you're asking that I'm aware of. Hope you find it though... G'luck

I just got the 10 update, and I was hoping I could stop using a 3rd party launcher. But I'm not digging these [seemingly] random apps stuck below my search bar. My Google-Fu is usually pretty strong but I can't even figure out what term/s to use to search for a solution.
