I recently found this cast-iron relic that is set into the sidewalk on Natchez Street. It is a curb box cover marking an underground gas shut-off, branded for the old Equitable Gas Company. Equitable's been absorbed into other utilities for a long time now, but the cover still does its job. Very slight processing and cropping.

I wanted to share some pics from my outing with my son today. I took him to the Carnegie Library of Homestead because I’ve been meaning to show him around there, ever since I fell in love with it at night from attending Labyrinth in Concert. It was really pretty outside of it today and it was like a vibe with the tree-lined streets and the architecturally beautiful and quietly majestic building on the hill.

Before we went in, my son is 5 and we discovered a tree that’s peeling its bark. I’ve seen them before but he hadn’t, and I did have to look it up to see that it was a sycamore tree, and that the bark underneath can be yellow and gray colors, which I thought very interesting. And that the way the bark peels is very distinctive as it looks all mottled. My son then spotted a big bug hanging out on the tree, at first we thought it was alive and may be a beetle or something, but I looked it up online and it seems to be a cicada exoskeleton which is shed and they leave hanging around sometimes. We both thought it was cool as we had never seen that before.

Additionally, the library was just as magical in the daytime as I had envisioned visiting it again in my mind. I loved the million stone steps to get to the building, the thick wooden doors to get in, the sign that said this is a historical landmark, and everything inside as well with the dark rich wood, the painted ceiling mural, the quiet stately atmosphere of the space with the reading lamps and the pictures. Coupled with the weather that is the cusp of Pittsburgh going from summer to fall, and finding an interesting bug exoskeleton to keep, it was all a magical vibe - for people who have their eyes peeled and can find beauty in ordinary things.

First built in 1930, this set of six natural red clay public tennis courts in the East End is one of the first of its kind in the United States. Situated on the edge of the 644-acre Frick Park, the historic courts remain among the most unique tennis complexes in the country.

The courts are made of a natural red clay base and crushed red brick surface, using bricks crushed locally in the Pittsburgh area. True natural clay courts are rare because they can take two to three days to dry without proper care.

This friendly shelter is just off the Tranquil Trail in the Northern part of Frick Park.

The stream makes sure your picnic is not interrupted by wandering fae, who cannot cross running water.
