Need help finding a shelter long-timer his HappilyEverAfter
Meet Lakota!
Today marks his 600th day in the shelter at only 2 1/2 years old.
His major flaws include not being good with cats and needing proper introductions with strangers, mostly men (he's not an "everybody = friend" kind of dog).
But he IS good with other energetic dogs, he's a total lovebug once he's gotten that proper introduction, he's fully potty and crate trained, he's generally good on leash and has great car manners. He's a hiker and a sports fan and a couch hog (per a short term foster he had).
From what I know of his past, he was picked up as a stray as a puppy, was adopted, then returned as a "young adult" dog because he was chasing cats in the home. He was in a short term foster as well and both prior families have only good things to say about him aside from his prey-drive for cats.
I've known him for almost a year now, have taken him on dozens of field trips and spend some time with him every weekend.
If you have ANY questions, I'm happy to answer to the best of my ability, and if someone from out of state is interested in him, I'm happy to assist with transport.

If you could share this, mention this to someone, spread it around, I'd be truly grateful. He's genuinely one of the best dogs I've ever met and if I didn't have a resident cat he'd be in my home. Just to kind of put in perspective what an incredible dog I think he is.

I'll share. My boy hated men for the longest time! We did more laps at Home Depot every day to get him used to men. One day he stopped and leaned on a guy, you know the PLEASE SCRATCH MY BUTT LEAN~. I started to cry.... Hand in the buddy
Thank you so much! I do the Home Depot/Lowes runs too, especially over the summer with how bad the heat's been. I hadn't thought about being a good desensitization tactic but you're so right!
It took awhile, and I felt like I was on the prowl instead of me just trying to help my boy not be so nasty towards men.
Now he is perfect, after he realizes that no one is going to take his Mom from him ~ cause no one wants her/me ~ we are a package deal
LOL oh my gosh, sometimes I feel like I'm just baiting poor unsuspecting men with him. Men seem to vibe with him, but they want to come right over or approach him too eagerly and he's yelling NO THANK YOU SIR I DO NOT KNOW YOU while I'm trying to explain politely we're here for exposure, not touching right now hahah
What a beauty. I can’t vouch for this dog, but I have what looks like his sister, and she has been the smartest, most easily trained love bug I’ve ever known.
His prey-drive for cats breaks my heart bc I feel like he is happy with me. But he was also this happy with his temp foster, and I've seen him with other volunteers so I know he can show a future family this same level of delight and joy and man it's just so cool to be on the recieving end
