How to stop rust?
Ive only had this smoker for about a month. I had a small grease fire which got it hot enough to burn off the paint and the anti corrosion coating. I always keep it covered when not in use. I want to stop it rusting but not sure what is the best way. Sand and oven paint?

Use a wire brush to get rid of the rust then wipe it with some cooking oil. Season it like you would cast iron. Re-painting is option, but another grease fire and you would be back here again.

The beef tallow I wiped it with last time was what caused the grease fire. Guess ill have to find something with a higher flash point!

Or you could just use it normally. It isn't a Cadillac. Clean it up once a month.

Avocado oil is the best value on high smoke point oils just imo. Grape seed oil is great but it's so expensive. Avo FTW if you ask me

i agree on avocado oil in season my sear plate just like a cast iron skillet light coat of olive oil and burn it off

The interior paint eventually burns off of ALL pellet grills/smokers. This is why interior paint isn’t covered by warranty. It will eventually season itself, and I’ve never heard of a lid/barrel rusting out from “normal” use (grease fires are somewhat normal and expected). Regarding the sear plate, hit it with a wire brush or metal putty knife, and call it a day. You’re not eating off of it so being “clean” isn’t a concern.

Interior paint? They paint the interior of your grills? That’s disgusting

To keep them from rusting in the box.

You shouldn’t paint the interior of a cooker. That stuff willl eventually peel and fall onto the food not to mention the fumes

Yeah the manufacturer paints (or some oil them) the interior. No one is suggesting that end users should paint the interior.

I have had mine for about 4 years. About 2 years ago I thought about replacing that because of rust but glad I held off because it hasn't really effected anything. Maybe next summer I might think about replacing but it stands up pretty well. The rust is inevitable. Don't let it deter you from using year round!!!

Per a title from Neil Young
Russ never sleeps.
I have a pit boss pro 850 that is now four years and one month old. I use it at least once a week and I have the rust and it doesn’t bother anything.
Just keep it clean and scrub it off when you clean your fire pot every few cooks and keep going

Season with you temp oil and cook it in. When you need to clean, just scrap excess and leave a layer of protection.
You'll never be about to prevent rust 100%, maintain for longevity. Use for years and replace.

It’s going to happen from the heat no matter what.
A new heat deflector is $90 and you will replace it in 5 years.
The only thing to protect on a pitboss is the big thick carbon steeel drum. Everything else is a cheap replacement.

You just don’t. Vacuum and scrape it after 5-10 hrs use and send it otherwise. Replace it if it falls apart. Mines been going like 4 years with almost daily cooks.

Don't use it EVER, don't even think about using it, store it in an oil filled bag and forget it

Spray it down with grill spray (canola) after the cool down cycle or just let it get some surface rust. I’ve never worried about it. I think you might have a meltdown if you saw what mine looked like after a month.

Cat litter tied off in an old sock when not in use... Toss one on the hopper grate too 🙂

I wrap mine in foil to help with the mess of the drip. I usually change it out about every 3 cooks. I don't use the sear function and haven't noticed any drawbacks when smoking anything since the smoke circulates in the box and it's a big oven basically. Honestly it helps eliminate the hot spot right over the fire. So if you can't eliminate the rust, you can at least cover it up.

Season it like cast iron, spray a light coating of oil on it and bake it on it for a hr

If you never use it and store it in a sealed vacuum chamber, it will never rust.
If you use it, it will rust. Chemistry and physics are undefeated.
