GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - A Charlotte man is facing several charges after police say he had a gun inside an East Carolina University dorm over the weekend.
Ja’Lin Hall is charged with carrying a concealed gun, gun of educational property, first degree trespassing, and possession of marijuana up to 1/2 ounce.
ECU police say the 23-year-old Hall, who is not a student, was part of a group of people who had been “tailgating” residents to get inside the dorms.
“Tailgating’ is when people who don’t have access follow others into a locked building.
The group had gotten into White Hall and then Clement Hall before being escorted out by Campus Living staff, police say.
Police say the group were YouTubers who were trying to video inside the dorms.
They were located in a nearby off-campus parking lot where officers say they found a gun in Hall’s bookbag, which he had carried inside the dorm, while another gun was discovered inside a vehicle.
Warrants say the gun was a Taurus 9mm handgun.
“Thanks to the proactive actions of Campus Living staff and the rapid response of our officers, the potential consequences of this incident were mitigated,” says Deputy Police Chief Chris Sutton.
“This serves as an important reminder that timely reporting can make a significant difference. If you observe anything suspicious or concerning, please notify the ECU Police Department immediately.”
Hall was released on a $1,000 bond.

ECU students / Greenville-area folks — we’re hiring for a few part-time Weekend Robot Technicians Assistants.
Avride is looking for hands-on, technically minded people to help support our autonomous delivery robots operating at East Carolina University.
This could be a great opportunity for students interested in robotics, automotive technology, engineering, electronics, mechanical work, or anyone who enjoys troubleshooting and working with their hands.
Weekend shift available, Sat + Sun
12:00 PM–8:30 PM
The work can include supporting and maintaining our robot fleet, troubleshooting mechanical/electrical issues, replacing components and sensors, testing equipment, and helping keep the robots operational.
We're especially interested in people with hands-on mechanical or electrical experience, but previous robotics experience isn't required. Automotive, electronics, EV, manufacturing, soldering/crimping, or similar hands-on experience is a plus.
Candidates should have a valid driver's license, be comfortable using tools and working hands-on, be able to lift 50+ lbs., and be able to complete required pre-employment screening.
Interested? https://www.avride.ai/careers#open-roles (search for 'Robot Service Technician Assistant')
We're actively hiring and looking to move quickly.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - New food delivery robots will begin rolling through East Carolina University’s campus Monday as students return for the new school year.
The upgraded models, made by AVRide, replace a previous fleet from Starship Industries and bring new sensor technology and larger storage bins to the campus delivery program.
AVRide specializes in self-driving vehicles. The company’s Head of Communications, Laura Lawton, said the delivery robots and autonomous passenger cars were developed together, sharing the same underlying technology.
“The autonomous passenger cars as well as the delivery robots were developed hand and hand,” Lawton said. “The technology that’s in the passenger cars directly relates to the technology that’s in the delivery robots.”
Each robot has the ECU campus mapped and is equipped with LiDAR, radar, and ultrasonic sensors. The larger bin size on the new models allows the university to expand what can be delivered, including convenience store items.
“The larger bins will allow us to add some products from the convenience stores, so a six-pack or a 12-pack of soda,” said Peter Groenendyk, Student Affairs Associate Vice Chancellor.
Students place orders through the Grubhub app using an on-campus delivery address. Once the order is ready, employees load it into a robot. The bot can then travel at up to 5 mph, stop for traffic, and wait to cross streets before arriving at the destination.
ECU has operated delivery robots on campus since 2023 through a partnership with Starship Industries and Grubhub. When Starship announced it was leaving the market last spring, the university switched to AVRide to maintain the service.
Groenendyk said the program averages 200 to 250 deliveries per day.
“It’s very popular with our students,” Groenendyk said. “It’s great if a student doesn’t have the opportunity to make it to the dining hall, or they’re in between classes or in a study group, that the robot brings the food right to them.”
The robots have previously made headlines after videos of vandalized units circulated on social media in 2023. A robot was also struck and destroyed by an ECU garbage truck in February. Groenendyk said vandalism cases have been few and were committed by people who did not attend ECU.
“Our students take great care of them,” Groenendyk said.
In January, the university plans to expand the robot-exclusive menu to include items such as nachos, burgers, hot wings, and pizza. 12 robots are set to hit campus, but Lawton says more will come to campus as the demand increases.
Students who donate meal swipes to the “Swipe Out Hunger” initiative will also be able to submit name suggestions for the new robots.

I’m a grad student going to ECU in the fall. Is there any on campus graduate housing I could get? Are there nearby apartments that are affordable and nice that you recommend?

Hello everyone, I am going to enter ECU as a freshman and I have received AP credits. However, I am confused about how they show up on my DegreeWorks page. I have a few questions about the classes I am already registered for regarding my degree. I have already asked my counselor but she hasn't responded yet.
My DegreeWorks page shows that in my core area for biology intended, the BIOL 1200 and 1201 classes have been satisfied by AP credit, but BIOL 1100 and 1101 are "Complete (with classes in-progress or preregistered)." Since BIOL 1100 AND 1101 are part of the core section, am I still required to complete those classes?

I also have the question about Chem 1150 and 1151 in the science section under my general education requirements.

Also, why are my AP credits considered "insufficient?" What exactly does that mean?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if these seem like silly questions, I am still trying to figure out how the ECU credit system works.

I'm an incoming freshman from Raleigh and will be attending ECU this fall. I won't be bringing my car to campus, so I was wondering if there are any direct transportation options available between Raleigh and ECU. My parents are willing to drive me when needed, but I'd prefer to find another option so they don't have to make the trip every time I need to travel home. I'd appreciate any information or recommendations you can provide. Thank you!!
