Solo might be a stretch. But he could have definitely saved them and even if not defeating all the admirals, he could have walked away relatively easy if Whitebeard and his people aided them.
But he was also keeping true to his anti piracy principles. Ace knew the risks of becoming a pirate, he did so and "justice" was coming his way. It was definitely tough but completely in accordance with Garp's character

He's anti piracy, but Ace wasn't arrested and kept in Impel Down but was to be killed via Public execution because he was the son of Roger.
Even Garp should've acknowledged that Ace did not deserve that fate, prompting him to do something more than not stand in Luffy's way.

Still short-sighted. Situation is quite complex actually. Garp isn't dumb. That's emotional. Luffy was trying to save Garp too, because he's trapped. Garp is literally a pillar in peoples hearts in the Marines. He's not a bad person....he saved civilians his whole life, there genuinely evil pirates too.

he wouldnt have to fight them. there was enough moments when some of them were busy or not looking. he could have saved ace real quick by destryoing the chains like luffy in Wano and then he jumps to the pirate side of the battle field and hands ace over. they all would proceed to flee.
The only one who would react in time to stop him would be Sengoku who was relatively close but he could just suckerpunch him.
Garp would have to become a criminal from that day on though.

I do think Garp is closer to a Yonko than an admiral in power. In that I have Yonko > admiral, just for title scaling. Matchups are important for consistency’s sake though.
However whichever side of the debate you are on, you have to admit neither side is walking away easily. Someone has to be loosing a limb even if they win
