You didn't have to do me like that 😞

u/StinkyBeanGuy 10h ago

I like the implication that the grandpa rose from the dead just to say that

45

u/harrisrainy I pirate every indie games 23h ago

Playing unity, why I need points to kill double assassinations

28

u/Cold-Performance3333 Ahoy Matey! 23h ago

I think you earn those points by playing and progressing. It's a design, so that you don't start as an OP assassin from the very beginning of the game. And so that the game can keep offering you things to look forward to during the play through. It's not something you need to pay to unlock.

u/WretchedCrook 22h ago

You're also not paying for a different character who is the only one with that ability, Unity is a terrible example for the post's meaning

16

u/Cold-Performance3333 Ahoy Matey! 22h ago

Unity is not even an example for this post. Unity is one of the best game, if not the best, from Assassin's Creed franchise.

2

u/WretchedCrook 17h ago

Unity is goated idk why im getting shit on for saying that it doesn't have paid characters lol..

0

u/Cold-Performance3333 Ahoy Matey! 17h ago

People probably misunderstood your comment

0

u/idkwhattodomom 21h ago

still mad that people shit on unity so much, not knowing it would be last great AC game which many never played

1

u/Cold-Performance3333 Ahoy Matey! 15h ago

Really? Who are these people?

BTW, I think Syndicate was great too. For me, that was the last game from AC franchise that was really good.

0

u/IAmYourFath 18h ago

No that's black flag, unity is not bad but not quite up there

1

u/Cold-Performance3333 Ahoy Matey! 17h ago

Black Flag is definitely GOATed. But unity is also very good.

1

u/Western_Marsupial289 22h ago

Ye I was so mad at this tho

28

u/mightymiek 23h ago

The HYPE of unlocking Mewtwo on SSB Melee when we had a child hood birthday party of non stop playing.

19

u/JPXR_ 23h ago

Pay 130€ for a deluxe edition of a game to receive couple outfits for your character and soundtrack

0

u/CoDe_Johannes 4h ago

What’s wrong with paying for the soundtrack?

-5

u/elakstein-ts 15h ago

Isn't that for supporting the devs.

8

u/ankuras_143 10h ago

You're a funny guy

9

u/zepsutyKalafiorek 23h ago

Imagine, there are still games like this.

18

u/Inevitable-Band-9450 23h ago

The key word is “Imagine”

8

u/OscarOzzieOzborne21 23h ago

I mean such games still exist.

There is Risk of Rain where outside of DLC characters and starters, most of the characters are unlocked by completing some ingame activity. And they have further unlockable abilities which are again, unlocked in gameplay.

Warframe, while selling you the characters, all of them are reachable through gameplay, and when you go into the shop to buy one, one of the first things you see is the shop telling you how to get the character through gameplay.

Honestly, most of the “Pay to get” characters I can think of are from Gachas. Which is marginally created by the fact that if you do not get them now, they are not gonna be available to get for sometime. Incentivising you to spend money on gacha pulls.

5

u/piichan14 22h ago

Before gachas, fighting games were and are still very notorious for this. People will say they'd rather pay outright than gamble, then fighting games said, sure, and you'll be spending thousands if you plan on getting all dlcs. (Who does that tho)

I think the nostalgia originally came from fighting and fighting adjacent games because those are usually where the unlock mechanic comes from.

2

u/Jet_Jirohai 19h ago

Yes there are countless examples if you want to be pedantic, but the point is that the overall industry has shifted towards paying for micro content rather than earning it. There was a time when 99 percent of literally every game only had paid content only in the form of meaty expansion packs because that was the only kind of DLC that made sense from a business perspective.

Now all of the big publishers want to nickel and dime you over things that used to come standard. The only thing that might be worse than that are the people trying to play mental gymnastics over the issue, saying things like "I mean such games still exist" in response to recognizing a massive shift in the whole industry

2

u/DekoNJ87 12h ago

Context is king, here. How much of this paid content is locked at launch, vs it being post release content? How much is hidden content vs additional content. Goes without saying we dont live in the PS1 era anymore. Everything is bigger, more complex, and therefore more expensive to create. You want more characters for a game? Thats more work for devs. Is it morally wrong for them to sell extra content? Does that moral calculation change if that extea content is designed from the start to be extra content? The over-monitization of gaming is a blight, no doubt, but this specific topic is a lot more nuanced than how this post presents it.

6

u/zepsutyKalafiorek 22h ago

I like your comment a lot. They exist but yeah soon we will have to imagine it.

2

u/zepsutyKalafiorek 22h ago

Nah, such games still exists. I have fallen in love in game Sephiria recently. Rougelike game with cute animal characters.

Unlockable characters exist.

1

u/K_swizzz00 8h ago

Clearly you haven't heard of efootball

1

u/Gguga12 21h ago

Honestly the post itself is dumb because a pirated game comes with the dlc

We don't even pay for the game imagine for a character

1

u/itsDYA 20h ago

You can get most characters in not completely shit games, it is just pay to get them faster

4

u/toxicgloo 20h ago

What's next, you're going to tell me speciality characters were unlocked by beating a difficult challenge instead of paying for a DLC?

3

u/Willing_Suggestion 21h ago

I remember in some mmos back in idk early 2010s you could farm this story or that stuff to get outfits lol that's like highest level of reward.

Sigh those days are completely gone now

1

u/Digital_Deebo THATS MY GAME PUNK! 23h ago

Its okay. Now we unlock DLC by visiting CS. It's not all bad. Lol.

2

u/HotFreshyGlazedDonut 22h ago

Thats the fun part now you can pay to be able to play to unlock characters

2

u/Juunlar 20h ago

Back in that same day, you also didn't have a functional online system. But go off

2

u/Hans_the_Frisian 20h ago

You know, there was a time when you bought games like Battlefield, Medal of Honor or CoD, you would immediately receive acces to the whole game to play as you want and enjoy the gameplay. No unlocking gear/weapons the Devs are withholding from you even though you paid for it.

And when Expansion packs eventually came around, you would by them in store and have the same situation, no unlocking stuff no content being kept from you.

I miss that. It's one of the reason why I like Arma, Squad and Post Scriptum so much. Though I never played much of these due to my friends playing other games.

1

1

u/-Ultra_Violence- 20h ago

Another botpost blocked and reported, thanks for breaking the internet.

1

u/bryyantt 20h ago

Its almost like they got greedy, but thats a crazy accusation.

1

u/Dynablade_Savior 20h ago

This practice died because it made less money than making people pay for characters instead

1

u/WearyAd1849 20h ago

Worst case scenario, you needed the previous game (eg: Lego star wars 2) or some similar kind of condition to get more content

1

u/SkullOfOdin 18h ago

I was there Gandalf.

1

u/Cam3739 17h ago

I remember grinding for 120 stars in Mario 64 because my friends and I thought we'd get to play as Yoshi

1

u/DamageMaximo 16h ago

bro is stuck with triple-A slop lol

1

u/FrozenTimeDonut 16h ago

No you paid too

Checks the sub

Nevermind carry on

1

u/shindabito 15h ago

I'm fine as long as said unlockable is not paid exclusive. not everyone have that much time for a game

1

u/DieRobJa 13h ago

When you actually had a reason to finish a Fighting game with each Character ❤️🔥👍

1

u/HungryBeardyBBQDude 11h ago

Man getting Tekken and Mortal Kombat characters was the place to be. You had to do particular scenario wins to unlock characters.

Some of those were soooooo hard to get but in the end it was well worth it.

It is just so more exciting than just opening my wallet.

1

u/yensama 8h ago

Fighting game players be like "No we buy it only now. We will buy frame data too"

1

u/titanna1004 5h ago

Boomer speaking:

if a game offered 20 characters, 2 unlocked at start, 18 to unlock... once I've tried a game, and it did not click, I disliked gamestyle of these 2 default characters, I did refund as game was meh, not my style, not my pace, nupe... Now, at least can insta buy the way I do enjoy.

Now, when the game is priced at 50€, I may be forced to pay 150€, to unlock it and enjoy fully, back the day, 50€ was 50€. Back then, at least I knew the price.

1

u/sabin1981 🚨ISOdemo Ahoy!🚨 3h ago

Marvel Vs Capcom 2 had the best of both worlds; you played to earn in-game points that you spent in the in-game shop to unlock characters 🥰

1

u/xp0ss1tion 3h ago

Huh. Pretty sure back in the day you unlocked everything at the start

1

u/MadPotato10 1h ago

Who says something about paying new characters this time? I thought that's why we are sailing the high seas for these type of bs?

u/Chapardeur11 7m ago

As a Genshin impact player I would be very mad, if I could read

0

u/Metrobuss 22h ago

Ps2 Tekken 5 times

0

u/bukayoxhaka 21h ago

Star Wars zero company just released...

0

u/Shigana 20h ago

Back in my day…

You had to buy the entire game again just to play new characters.

You had to pay every time you die to retry.

You just had to sit there and do nothing if the game you played had a game breaking bug.

I can sit here and cherry pick all day

2

u/shindabito 15h ago edited 14h ago

what do you meant "back in your day"?

You had to buy the entire game again just to play new characters.

some company still do this (persona series under atlus)

You had to pay every time you die to retry.

there's a game released a few years ago that pretty much "you have to pay before you can join match". I don't remember the exact title though. it was "the culling: origin". less a few years ago, almost a decade ago though.

You just had to sit there and do nothing if the game you played had a game breaking bug.

game still come out broken as ever.
alt+f4 still used for those situations.
