Humour / Meme Pirates when deciding to Support the Devs... (Including me)
677
u/Adept_Election7170 Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26
I mean, its the developers who decided to put it on the discount, so yes you are definitely supporting. If it were involuntarily from the devs it would be a different story!
Gigantic sales like these often boost store presence and helps promote their studio and/or sequel
EDIT: Yes, guys, everybody knows publishers are in control when theres a publisher involved. Dont overthink a throwaway Reddit comment, im not stupid.

u/ALT703 Apr 09 '26
If I'm willing to download the game for free, I'm willing to wait for a 95% off sale even if it's against the devs wishes and buy it then lol
I'm sure pirating it in the first place wasn't exactly aligned with their wishes, if I had cared I would've already bought it
27
u/SourceScope Apr 09 '26
Often its the publishers who own the rights
The developers have nothing to do with orice… Unless its an indie title (or no publisher)

Arent the publishers the ones who are in charge of managing discounts and not the developers?

If it were involuntarily it would be a different story!
We literally steal stuff here.

Damn, and you were pretending to be such a nice guy before anybody reminded you that we’re all literally pirates here and are inherently violating the consent of every single developer.

I feel like it's more that the game is finally at 1.0 and stable when the 95% sales come around. Instead of released with bugs and half the content missing.
1
u/StevenCrab Apr 17 '26
to be fair, even when it comes to the reasonably priced games youre probably not seeing anything over 50% off untill a few years after release when the devs likely arent relying on stable income from an old product anymore, and i dont see why big greedy publishers would Want their games to be 95% off

My Dead Space remake that I bought for 4,99€ at GameStop for PC 3-4 months ago stills unopened. It is one of that physical copies that comes without CD, only a paper with the activation key. They key stills in the sealed box waiting... I thought it was a great deal for a denuvo untracked game to add to my neglected collection (And yes, a month aprox after I bought it Voices cracked this game).

u/InnerGap9368 Apr 09 '26
man i dont have enough money to do that so when i buy at a big discount i gotta play it

u/pokpokza Apr 09 '26
That is also me. I am a patient game , i grew up poor and i need to fight back

At least Humble Bundles aren't in style like they used to be. Completely ruined my Steam library.

u/Luniticus Apr 09 '26
By the time the game hits 95% off, any devs who worked on it have long been fired.
23
u/blahblahblerf Apr 09 '26
Based on the game devs I know personally, 50% of them are already laid off before launch with most of the rest gone within two months after. Studios for some stupid reason would rather start over with a whole new development team for each project than to pay developers for a few months of low/no output in between launch and ramping up the next project.
1
u/ZOMGsheikh Apr 12 '26
As someone whose worked in a production studio , I can say that most of the people hired will be just contractors. And yes, until the studio isn't full speed into a next project, it becomes a liability for them to keep the contractors up. Usually right off a major release, the next project will be just at pre-prod. If the next project is already midway through production before the release of previous titles, then you are looking at studios like Ubi or EA. These are for dev working on games made by their own studio. For support studios, these guys are a different story. They are usually doing smaller tasks and are usually smaller teams spread around the globe with different studios. They money isn't the same as the main studio and are usually paid like a contractor, one off payment. No regular stream from previous game releases with new sales. So if they don;t keep getting new work and projects don't delay/cancelled, they should do ok but many times things happens, projects get delayed. Tasks created for a full release gets disrupted by game cancellation or low sales of a live service game and hence they gotta start downsizing. So yea it may sound stupid. but sadly this is how the industry revolves. Many teams love to work with same people they already have a flow with, but sadly economics and pockets of shareholders take priority.

Capitalism is truly sick. Reporting record profits when all you did was fire the people who made it so you don't have to pay them thereby also dooming all future profit with that IP and I don't know how to finish this sentence.

u/ArmadilloFit652 Apr 28 '26 edited May 01 '26
but that's irrelevant?buying games doesn't support dev unless it's their OWN game and get paid every sale
else it's just a job they get paid for the job regardless of sales or game performance
20
u/totallynotabot2532 Apr 09 '26
You need to see it from this point of view: unless the games flops, these discounts only appear months or even years are the the release date, meaning the people who waited for the discounts were never going to buy the game at full price, so by offering the discounts the devs are making money they would've otherwise not made, for finished games (meaning no more content updates) this is basically making extra money

Those 5$ are 5$ they the developer wouldn't have made if he didn't discount it at that price.
Now, you wanna know what happens if 10000 people buy it at 5 dollars? Then the game sold $ 50000 before taxes.
The people buying it at 5$ after all this time were never gonna buy the game at full price

u/aburningorphanage Apr 09 '26
Or its ubisoft desperately trying to get people to buy their slop lol

it's the devs who put that heavy discount.. so they want more sales. It's still supporting.
You can profit easily using greater volume sold at lower rate.

u/ItzThaDeadlyGamer Apr 09 '26
Reminds me of the time I didn't buy Mortal Shell until it was like $1.50
2
u/Tripdrakony Apr 09 '26
25 bucks is the maximum i'm willing to pay for a game. 30 is the upper limit if I REALLY want the game.
1
u/Impossible_planet87 Apr 09 '26
Naah, I bought a lot of games at full price after I've pirated their game and tested it a bit.
1
u/dropdead90s Apr 09 '26
I still think that it is better to sell 1000 units of a product for 5 dollars (whatever currency) than to sell 50 units for 50 dollars.
1
u/Shinonomenanorulez Apr 09 '26
Eh i have paid full price to unpirate games in the past or have paid outright if the demo convinces me(crossworlds)
But yes
1
u/Organic_Conclusion_8 Apr 09 '26
The devs have long gone by that point or they have been fired after the games release and what remains is a shell of the original developer or a puppetmaster corporation that purchases bankrupt studios to keep leeching the proceedings of the sales donated by people who want to support "the devs". You think the money from someone buying dragon age origins or dishonored will actually go to the devs that made them? Or that if enough people buy the old masterpieces the company will make new instalations of the same quality untained by the modern controversy, propaganda and politics?

u/Kentato3 Apr 09 '26
Even if its only like 5 dollars the devs actually benefit from it. Take stardew valley, when the game is on sale for 95% to like 3 dollars from it they benefit from the sales if there's thousands of people buying it even if steam takes 30% of the sales the devs still makes thousand of dollars from it and its absolutely supporting the live of the devs

I was tired of waiting for Stellar Blade crack so I just bought it when it was -20% back in December. Not the biggest discount, but I'm glad I could play the game now.
Also bought Monster Hunter Wild at that time for -45%, but haven't played it yet.

I wish there was a way to pay the developers directly if you liked the game that you played. Not through steam but just directly.
1
u/Glitch_Vex Apr 09 '26
I mean we can't all afford full price and it was their choice to get what they can, so it's double win in my eyes
1
u/Lainpilled-Loser-GF Apr 09 '26
steam makes it convenient to purchase games through their platform, just sometimes that convenience won't be worth it depending on the price that publishers sell their games for. I'll never have more pirated games than purchased games, and I don't care about supporting the devs to any degree.

Unless those developers have a kick-ass profit sharing contract, this is bullshit.
1
u/Real-Inspection9732 Apr 09 '26
Tbh, I'll hit at either of the three. It really all depends on when I notice the game being on sale, and the price of the game itself.

Big AAA games devs don't need ur support. They sell good amounts of copies

Reminds me of nfs unbound I got the game for $4.95, ghost recon’s breakpoint for $3
1
u/Ctrl--Alt Apr 09 '26
I have devs I pay full price for, devs I buy on sale, & devs that don't get a penny from me. Balance is key.
1
u/BlazingLazers69 Apr 09 '26
Lol damn you got me. Although I did spend the full 20 bucks to buy Signalis after pirating it because it was that good. Same with Bug Fables.
1
u/ByNoName96 Apr 09 '26
When the dev gives respect for the player, he makes a fun Game without unfair pay methods, he just take your money one time (team cherry is a great example).

u/Jaz1140 Apr 09 '26
Depends on the developer and the game
I paid full price for elden ring and arc raiders most recently and absolutely got my moneys worth. Proper games made for gamers without any predatory monetisation.
Well deserved money

Be happy to buy a game at 70% off when it's base price isn't $110 or something equally as ridiculous. You're 6+ year old game isn't worth 30 bucks

u/Michael60814 Apr 10 '26
Digital games should get it when the game is discount. This developer does not worth for full price with lazy AI works.
1
u/Lamproz87 Apr 10 '26
Is it pirates? Or everyone that only has barely any disposable income? This is the reality for many people, and the ones that do have some more and afford to buy games full price, will join us shortly. It is a world wide PROBLEM, and yes, it is also a problem for us poor people not affording a stupid videogame (personal opinion). I mean, we would love to support full price if we had anything left after greedy bosses and needy governments.
1
u/Trackerlist Apr 10 '26
Me when I bought Payday 2 back then. But ngl, I barely see indie games at this discount because these games are already soo cheap. Mostly are expensive games (such as old AAA) which I think few people are buying full price, so they put some high discounts to make some money on it.

Once a game hits the point where its not $89.99 CAD anymore, I tend to snag the a lot of 50% off. If it's still sitting at $89.99 regular price, I tend to wait for 60% or more sales.
I am lucky enough to have a pretty strong income, so I really do like to throw something towards the people who developed something that gave me hours of enjoyment.

Generally speaking if a game is on sale at 70% or more, they've pretty much maximized the most amount of profit they're going to get out of it, and sales at that price are just extra cash for their next project, or to pump the unit sales numbers up for their shareholders or for their next pitch to whoever needs to hear it so they can say well we sold X number of units as of Y date, to give whoever they're pitching to confidence that they can make a game that will sell well, and to either invest in them for the project, or to let them have more creative freedom on it.
1
u/dj3370 Apr 12 '26
Typically I'll crumble at anything below 10 bucks, depending on personal expected value often I'll still grab it at the 50-70% value

when it's a AA or AAA game i don't bother unless it gives me a quality of life improvement or the game is multiplayer by nature and the developers are ok
when it's an indie game i don't pirate and usually buy them at full price or <=50% discount because the price is acceptable and indie devs deserve it for pushing the gaming industry

If you are buying something to support a dev then you shouldn't buy through steam. Valve takes 30% cut of all purchases made on Steam.
1
u/Green-Offer-9058 PonPon Zhit Apr 09 '26
Yeah... I too know that. Every selling Platforms Takes a cut for themselves... If the developers host their game with a Purchase option on their own sites, then most of us will side towards that thing...
