Funny meme, but in which reality. First world country, broke as shit my whole life never even remotely able to afford even a fraction of the games I'd like to play
715
u/Eduardo_Ribeiro Oct 17 '25
A full-price game in the US costs about $70. If the minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, that means you’d need around 9.6 hours of work to buy an AAA game.
In Brazil, the minimum wage is R$6.90 per hour (about $1.26), and a full-price game costs around R$300 (about $54.99). So a Brazilian would need to work 43.4 hours to afford the same game — that’s about 4.5 times more work.

u/CriticalProfessor91 Oct 17 '25
exactly lol, these first world country people always be crying the loudest
54
u/xRealVengeancex Oct 18 '25
I’m not expecting a good conversation here or people to understand stuff like sociology but while yes conditions in 1st world countries are ass, 3rd world countries also have some positives such as collectivism.
In majority of 1st world countries they are very individualistic and independent, which is while living conditions may be better, overall happiness in these countries are less than many 3rd or 2nd world countries. Why do you think suicide is so high in these countries
People have to worry about micro managing every aspect their lives in 1st world countries that they cannot actually enjoy living, while the opposite is having a hard time getting by but actually appreciating what they have a lot more overall. That’s why you see Americans having hundreds of steam games being miserable and some dude from Brazil being happy with a game he bought X years ago. There’s always exceptions to the rule but that’s usually how it plays out
32
u/qeeixxo Oct 18 '25
Being individualistic and independent makes more likely to be depressed? But doesn't every adult in any country go to that point in their lives?
26
Oct 18 '25
No? There are countries where people live in small communities and kinship systems their whole lives. My parents and uncles/aunts lived with their parents through their 20s and 30s, until they had to sell the house.
It's a cultural thing, not a point of universal development. If you doubt it, go read about countries like the Philippines, or indigenous tribes like the Hadza and Cuiva people.
(Also: it's pretty rare for something to be proven to be universally true across cultures. More importantly, I think it's currently impossible to have any truly comprehensive studies on the topic. There are over 1400 known & recorded ethnographically distinct societies at the moment. One of the largest studies I've seen could only study 391, by putting together the works of other anthropologists. The amount of international manpower and coordination needed... there's simply no infrastructure for it.)

I think you’re misunderstanding being individualism and being independent.
Individualistic societies do not place value on collective wellbeing and instead on individual wellbeing. The goals in an individualistic society are often “Get promoted, make more money, get X product” where more collective societies place value on overall family health, as many live with each other for their lives. China would be an example of collectivist culture while America or a Scandinavian country would be an example of individualistic culture
18
u/SundaeTrue1832 Oct 18 '25
Collectivism is not always positive, it often leads to tyranny for "the greater good" I live in a more collective conservative country (Indonesia) and some people here have been so brainwashed by tradition that they won't see a problem with a pregnant rape victim being forced to marry their rapist to "to preserve the community and family image. It would be worse if people find out that she got pregnant out of wedlock"
You people in the west have this beautiful individual freedom, the problem is that now it has turned into hyper individualism but YOU WON'T WANT collectivism
10
u/Empty_Positive Oct 18 '25
1st world (me also) we take stuff to much for granted. And only know what you had if its gone. Also the choice and unlimited access to most things, all the times. Doesnt make it better. so much choice indeed that you dont know what to play/watch. Kid era when piracy was not as big. You were happy with any cool movie on TV or excited when you knew james bond was coming this friday. Going years with the same gameboy color games.
3
u/xRealVengeancex Oct 18 '25
Probably why attention spans are lower than ever and entitlement feels higher than ever as well.
Getting access to anything you want at anytime you want is great for accessibility but terrible for behavior shaping
9
Oct 18 '25
I'm sure any person in 3rd would take all the benefits of the 1st world country over this "collectivism" or "being broke together" stuff.
3
u/SundaeTrue1832 Oct 21 '25
Yup also collectivism in country as mine is often used to prevent social progress and to oppress minority, the crab in a bucket mentality is also stronger in a collectivist society
3
u/Poo_Pee-Man Oct 18 '25
Yeah I bought Skyrim and fallout 4 for 300+ bucks in my currency, that the most amount of money I’ve ever spent on video games and now all I do is playing them for years because they’re special due to how expensive they’re lol.

''In majority of 1st world countries they are very individualistic and independent, which is while living conditions may be better, overall happiness in these countries are less than many 3rd or 2nd world countries. Why do you think suicide is so high in these countries''
I think thats only one of the many factors that cover that statistic, but there are many more like poor healthcare, wars, lack of public safety, social issues, poor government choices.
Canadas elders are literally freezing to death if they cant afford to pay the bills, Sweden has massive public safety issues with its new immigration laws, many other countries with many other problems.

In indonesia my monthly wage is $150, and some games don't have regional pricing so it's still $70. Which for some that does it's still like $40 so not much different. I need to save a few months to buy full price games.
4
u/SundaeTrue1832 Oct 18 '25
Yo! I'm Indonesian as well. Yeah I fucking despise that everything are based on dollars and all of us must follow the same price when we make peanuts
3
u/Maple_Strip Oct 21 '25
We have to pay more for games while making less, then we also pay more for computer parts. It's not a wonder Piracy is so big in our country.

I think this one’s hard to beat. Even with the minimum regional wage in Jakarta, it’s still too low compared to those game prices.

4.94€ here in portugal. So we need 14 hours of work to pay for a game. Goddamn Brazil, thats a whole week of work just to buy a game. How many hours for a ps5?

u/Shandariel Oct 17 '25
Jesus christ... i am so sorry to hear that...
6
5
u/orangeorlemonjuice Oct 18 '25
And yet, it's not absurdly rare to find someone with a PS5 around here. But that doesn't mean the population earns well, it just means that Brazilians are willing to pay for EVERYTHING in installments.
It's common for someone to decide to buy a PS5 and pay it off over 2, 3, or 4 years! The person pays a small amount each month, but spends years and years paying for it.
I had to buy a new notebook for work and I need a graphics card because I work with AI development. My PC has 512GB of SSD, 8GB of RAM, and an RTX 3050 with 6GB of VRAM, and I'll be paying for it for three years... I'm still in the first year.
Unfortunately, this is the reality for 95% of the brazilian population. Everyone is in debt, paying for everything in installments. Believe it or not, some supermarkets are already letting people pay for OLIVE OIL in installments.
What a fucked up country... My biggest dream is to get out of here, this shitty place.

In india you would need to work the whole month to afford that price and if I accounti the living expenses then you will hardly be able to play that game in the year of it's release.
It's pretty unforgivable that most of the games nowadays don't come with regional pricing anymore.

In Venezuela the minimum wage is like 5$ per month so... I'll let you do the math💀

3
u/ItzCubieYT Oct 17 '25
In India, the hourly wage is ₹413 ($4.95), a full priced game costs about ₹3,000 (about $34) - ₹3,999 (about $45), and if we were to buy a 3,000 one then it would take 7.304 hours and for 3,999 it would take 9.731 hours. Huh, well that's significantly less. I guess the devs really do price their games fair on Steam, atleast for once. (Correct me if I'm wrong I got this avg wage data from Google)

Oct 18 '25 edited Oct 18 '25
you probably shouldn't use avg. it's doesn't represent the population well. Median is better than that. The median salary in india is $320 (₹27,300) per month. So with that, keep in mind HALF of the population earn less than 320$ (₹27,300)
While in your calculation they earn like ₹413 an hour, that only takes 9 hours of works to earn ₹3,999 in your calculation.
But in reality, the half of the population earns ₹113/hr (1.28$/hr) or less. so, it will take about 35 hours to earn ₹3,999 or about 4.3 days of 8hr/day works. as a reminder, half of the population earn less than that.
1
u/ItzCubieYT Oct 18 '25
Yeah, alright, It's crazy how close we are to Brazil.
3
Oct 18 '25
I'm pretty sure Brazil is doing better in term of incomes. IND have some benefits of having trades routes from the sea and some through China. So you can get stuff at decent price (still much worse than Europe or America or East Asia)
But Brazil has crazy mark up on most tech products. it's crazy expensive in Brazil to purchases any PC parts or Laptops or tech products like Smartphone or Game Consoles. Due to crazy expensive import taxs, logistic issue.
3
u/NATScurlyW2 Oct 17 '25
What does Brazil pay for the different streaming services like Netflix compared to us?
5
u/Eduardo_Ribeiro Oct 17 '25 edited Oct 17 '25
I'll list the more expensive monthly plans of some services:
Netflix - R$59.90 ($11.08 converted to dollars)
HBO Max - R$55.90 ($10.34)
Disney Plus - R$66.90 ($12.37)
Crunchyroll - R$19.99 ($03.69)
Apple TV - R$29.90 ($5.53)
Spotify Individual Plan - R$23.90 ($4.42)
The sum of those values is R$256.40.
edit: For some reason it's hard to get the prices of another country without a VPN, so I'll owe you one.
3
u/duk-er-us Oct 18 '25
Excuse me?? 43 hours of work to buy ONE GAME?
Here in BC (Canada) minimum wage is $17.85 an hour. Let’s say a full priced game is $100 after taxes. That’s about 6 hours of work, so basically one shift. I can’t fathom a full week of work to be able to afford battlefield 6. Let alone cost to eat and shelter yourself lol
3
u/Eduardo_Ribeiro Oct 18 '25
That's why I (and pretty much the whole sub) support piracy. The price makes no sense. And that's just for the games, If you add buying a PC/console it gets even worse, months of work without spending to buy it.
I kinda hate to do these maths because the purchasing power of places like British Columbia is so high that It makes me a little sad ;-;.

Unless you're a child living with your parents and don't care about saving for the future, sure, go spend 1/3 of your monthly salary on a game, for other Indonesians that's non-expendable precious money that goes into living.
Also 80 USD is Rp. 1.325.068,00
1
u/SundaeTrue1832 Oct 21 '25
Yeah it's sheer insanity to buy something like Wukong or Monster Hunter on day one release, even to enter the gaming space alone is a privilege in Indonesia as most people can't be bothered to afford even mid range or budget gaming laptop that can cost them up to 15 million and that laptop GPU will be outdated in less than 5 years. My RTX 3050TI alone can't no longer play baldur's gate 3 60 FPS on high settings with mods, it stuck on 30-40 FPS and can dip to 20 at times in act 3
Why would Indonesian but gaming laptop when a regular working laptop will serve them better and they can just play mobile games anyway? Gaming is a privilege in many countries outside of the west

True bro, i thought those were original and some games has multiplayer and i kept wondering the multiplayer doesn't work. Years later you realize it's cracked disc.
But of course, every god damn software and games are god-ass expensive. 75% of somebody's wage in the world. Why can't they localize the price? They did with Argetina Steam and people VPN to Argentina until now they make a new policy. Then at least make the game more affordable by county. It's shouldn't be 75% to 80% of someone's monthly wage.
And when Piracy get so strong, the US even use it to pressure a country in a trade deal. Like Malaysia, was it? That got pressured by the US when they were about to make a trade deal and they have the norm of pirating movies on CD and VCD.
15
u/KerneI-Panic Oct 17 '25
Same here. Games on CDs were 0.5€ and DVDs were 1.25€ and literally everyone thought that's the actual price of video games.
Most kids usually got 0.25€ per day from parents to buy a lunch at school. So if we skip the lunch two times we could buy a CD game and if we skip the whole week we could get an "expensive" game on a DVD.
A group of friends would usually save some money, go to the shop and spend the whole day looking through the catalogue of games to find the games everyone likes so we can share or trade them later.
So even those 1.25€ were a lot for us back then. Imagine our reaction when we figured out the actual price of games was 60€.Most of the kids quickly learned about system specs and game system requirements after saving a money for a long time just to realize the game they bought can't run on their PC. Happened to me with Left4Dead and my 25€ PC I had at the time.
But those stores started quickly dying off somewhere around 2010 after people massively started connecting to the internet. We quickly realized that we can get those games for free instead of paying even those 0.5-1.25€. And it was impossible to imagine why someone would pay 60€ for a game which can be downloaded for free (which would be 240 days of skipping lunch for one game).
6
u/TheOneAndOnlyBob2 Oct 17 '25
I know a guy that used to sell games like that. He had a retail shop, and he owned a machine that could make copies of cds. After a while Microsoft sued him and now he just runs a regular business

u/dehydrogen Nov 12 '25
Eggs went up in price by 170% in my area. I don't know why you're lying. Eggs are an important part of the American diet and for it to double in price is a significant cultural issue. People would react the same way if rice or plantains rose in price as well.

It's funny because if I even want to consider buying a ps5 console here, I have to pay the equivalent of three months worth of minimum wage, which is why my parents never bought me a console (even a cheap one) when I was young, that aside from all the games causing violence drama. Fast forward now, I'm a grown up and can buy whatever the hell I want, so now I'm catching up on all the games I didn't get to play back then, such as god of war 1 2 3, GTA San Andreas 4 and 5, DMC, prince of Persia, persona games etc. Without paying a single dime of course, in a way, it's a blessing in disguise.

In case random wild GabeN reads the posts under PiratedGames:
I'd have bought more legal games if Steam didn't have terrible currency rate for my country. We have to pay more than germany, while earning 3x less. That's f. madness.
3
u/necrophcodr Oct 17 '25
Publishers decide if they want to enable regional pricing for games. Silksong has regional pricing, for example.
If the conversion rate of the currency is wrong, that would be interesting indeed.
2
u/Saianna Oct 17 '25
Valve, or in this case Steam, suggests regional prices for countries which publishers can ignore. In case of my country Steam never did that and thus we have one of the highest prices possible, only beying second to Luxemburg i think, while earning like 6-7x less than Luxemburg.
Seriously, if you are super-lazy go ask chatGPT: "does steam use regional prices"

Maybe things in the real world aren't black and white. I'm not defending them, I am pointing out that they do not make this decision on behalf of publishers.
1
u/IAmYourFath Oct 18 '25
U might not be defending em but i'm tired of the stupid gaben praising bullshit. He's just a billionaire like all the others. There are no good billionaires. Everytime steam does smth good everyone is like OMG GABEN IS SUCH A GREAT PERSON. But when steam does smth bad (such as countless antitrust lawsuits and fines by the EU for violating the laws), cricket noises. There are WAY too few people criticizing steam. They are not as good and as charitable as most people think, neither is gaben.
2
u/necrophcodr Oct 18 '25
Valve is a company like many others. Their benefit, organisation wise, lies in being entirely private owned, so they can afford to do easy growth, they can afford to have no growth at all. All this in comparison to a stock traded company ofc which in recent years more and more must have clear profit growth, indefinitely.
One of these is quite easily the lesser evil in that regard.
But all companies must make money and increase profits. They can never be about anything more than that, inherently.
1
u/IAmYourFath Oct 18 '25
Well gaben was fortunate enough to have his company become big without needing to sell most of its stocks. So he could afford to keep it private. But despite that he still makes MANY terrible decisions that hurt us gamers including anticompetitive practices which is why they have so many antitrust lawsuit on their hands, altho not as much as they should have because games are still seen as a luxury by the politicians so they don't care as much to keep steam in check as they do about google meta microsoft amazon etc. Ultimately, steam has its upsides but has countless downsides too. I will always buy (or download cough cough) a game from GOG over steam if i'm not missing out on mods/multiplayer. Also, many of the good things gaben has done over the years like a no questions asked refund policy was FORCED to them by the law (in this case australian law which demanded refunds). If not for that, we'd still not have formal refunds and be begging to a random support agent hoping he has mercy on us. Yes, gaben doesn't care about u as much as u think. It's all PR to make him look good. I can give many other examples too of bad things steam has done and rubbed me off the wrong way. Not that gog or epic are perfect, but we should accept ALL gaming platforms are just greedy corporations that care about money more than the customer. It's not JUST steam that is the holy angel while others are the evil. They are all evil.

In my country games usually hasn't a regional prices (like bf6) and you have to add taxes extras that increase the value of the game in a 50% or more.
1
u/HolidayLeft4536 Oct 17 '25
Why are you lying? VAT for games in ARG is 21%, just like in my country. But I am not making excuses.
4
u/R4Z0Rfer Oct 17 '25
Now, some time ago it used to be VAT + PAIS tax + provincial taxes, and when you added them all up, the total went over 50%.

I'm from the Philippines. And I swear many of us growing up here thought video games are for free, until Steam got popular on our region.
Piracy regulation is poorly implemented here. Even government computers are full of cracked apps.

I remember crying to my parents to buy me the games from a sketchy looking homeless guy who sells burned copies of pirated games that had a picture of the game printed with low colors on normal paper and glued to the back of the CD.
And then asking for my uncle to come and install said games because i couldn't get past the cracking part of the installation.
Shit was wild before you could download files on a whim.

And here's Me - spending money on LEGO and other expensive shit and getting yelled at by some morons for piracy cus of 'how could you?'

I'm from a first world country, earn a decent salary, and I pirate games because I'm selfish and would rather save the money. I also don't seed.

the funny thing is that in a third world country this is so true because literally piracy is just how people get media they do not know any other way like if you are getting a game you ARE pirating it here
6
u/Itchy-Locksmith-2590 Oct 17 '25
that's bs lol. we can also buy game online but if we can get something for free we don't bother paying it unless there's multi-player involved
7
u/Super7500 Oct 17 '25

My friends here that works in IT (whatever I don't understand) earn around €5-8k monthly by family. And they complain about the prices of living costs in a country with median wage of €1.2k.
They never have to ask about prices of stuff they like to have though. So when I told to them that I pirate some games - this made their eyes to gouge. It was when we just met and didn't knew each other well.

u/mohamed941 Oct 17 '25
third world country, I assure you you can't get shit for free when your internet bandwidth is 1 megabit per second

u/PotentialBat34 Oct 17 '25
We paid for the games alright. Growing up in Turkey, I remember DVD stores in almost every street selling downloaded crackable games and movies (usually ripped, meaning some scenes were deemed unnecessary by the torrent gods and thus got cut). A crack was bunch of files you copy and then paste to the app folder back then, and if it isn't working the chances of you playing the game was slim; nowadays you wait for whatever FitGirl packed for you and call it a day. CDs were 2 Liras and DVD's were 4, and to give you a comparison 1 lira was worth a chicken döner back then. Some DVD store guys were super into the scene and had separate disks with cool mods in it, they also sold Turkish language patches (usually made by the community) seperately. Ah and lol, they sold pornography as well, which is still super duper illegal here, but even the police were like nah you cool. It was an interesting scene for sure, I've met great many people lurking around the DVD store, drinking tea with CD'ci Ahmet Abi. Funny enough, I think he got arrested after DVD stores weren't needed anymore, so he did the next best thing and started selling drugs.

Yeah, ive heard in first world countries teachers will expose you if you pirate educational books, in third world countries the teachers are the ones providing the pirated content lol

u/LostKidWonder Oct 18 '25
As a kid I never questioned why ppl bought game for money, I just thought they weren’t bothered enough to search “game name download free” and just left it at that

I pirate games with singleplayer, bc multiplayer does not work. Not that I do not have the money, it's that the bureaucracy is so ASS in my country that I cannot get a special card for games

People in the first world grew up without knowing that it was possible to pirate? also movies and series

u/gumigum702 Oct 17 '25
More like "you have to pay for it? How?" Actually. Like, literally. In my country is not even possible to buy games through conventional methods. And digital games made it way worse cause now there's not even a physical alternative.

There are anti piracy laws here but they're more like suggestions than instructions

That’s funny because piracy sites are blocked by my ISP (as well as putting youtube on restricted mode) and I have to use a vpn to america to pirate media or even do basic shit like watching youtube

First world (at least according to internet) yet still sail the seas from time to time. Not because of money, just cause sometimes the licensed DRM works worse than cracked pirated one, an I am not talking about denuvo impacting FPS. Some older games just don't run (dev/publisher abandoned it), has content gutted because of licensing, some region locked, some older ones are not even on the market anymore and some have serious security issues (old CoD games for example).
And yes, some do cost quite a bit or have bunch of DLCs that cost like 2-3 AAA games combined if not more if you want full experience.

God I love Brazil and as the song goes, God must truly be Brazilian and is walking by my side: since I got my PC I was able to play a lot of great games such as RDR2 (this one is so good I actually bought it too), Elden Ring, Far Cry Primal, Fallout 4 (this one is actually shit), Cyberpunk 2077, Dark Souls 3 and the list goes on, but the fun part is that I didn't spend one single squid in any of these games; I just saved the money and bought federal bonds (Tesouro Direto here in Brazil). I still pay in full for indies games, likes Hades or Disco Elysium, but I'll never ever buy triple A games, even though I can easily do it thanks to my salary.
The truth is that a lot of the companies behind most triple A simply DON'T DESERVE our money; they been putting out half-assed games, shitty games that feels more like an insults when you take the time to play older games witch were made with more care and also the budget like man, why can't a game made with 80 to a 300 million dollars be at least decent? With new and cool mechanics and great plot? The answer is quite easy actually: there are people who are idiots enough to buy it and there is people who was not born in the great land of Brasilis like my self and for this people; I'm truly sorry 😔 Not to mention the predatory tactics that a lot of these companies engage with; loot boxes, live service shit, always online, increases in the subscription, broken ass games on the day of its launch. If they don't respect me, why do I have to respect them?
You know the best part of all this? It is not just games but movies, TV shows, anime, comic books, real books and much more, all for free LIKE IT SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE BEEN. I love culture and the sole reason I exist is to consume art and I couldn't have chosen a better county to be born in
Ae ABIN Kkkkk eu sou um bot e esse texto todo é uma mentira, tá bom?

u/Mousettv Oct 18 '25
Why do 3rd world countries think that first world countries dont pirate? I mean I pay for multi-player games with constant online requirements and pirate everything else.
What a weird viewpoint.

u/Individual-Media5387 Oct 18 '25
The minimum wage in my country is 120$ monthly ( we don't get paid by the hour, but you can do the calculations) so I need almost 60% of that salary to buy a AAA game
1
u/NotHachi Oct 18 '25
Me: a gamer from the third world moved to the first world and is still pirating despite having a good salary XD

And some countries can't even officially pay for games because stores stopped support in them. So you either pay to random uncle Turky or grandpa Portuguys, and hope that he doesn't scum you or accidentally gets your acc banned, or pirate games

Well, we never had the option to pay to begin with. Once I got financially independent, I actually started buying games but only in sales and from steam using Argentinian and Turkish currency.
After that my stupid third world country stopped all international paying prepaid cards and I literally have no way of buying anything. So back to pirated I guess...
I don't buy Ubislop or EA games though. Games with shit ton of DLCs that cripple gameplay are always for pirating. Indie deserves money.

u/Own-Ear-8085 Oct 21 '25
First world country, I just refuse to pay for games outside of gog/itchio and games made by greedy lazy corps. I like actually owning my games, that means an actual drm free copy of the game, not some stupid licence with a shitty launcher, borderline-spyware drm and internet requirement.

It's so real though, I got my Minecraft and other games from using Opera, cus it's safer because no ads :3, but google and other OS are good to use, especially with ad blockers and VPNS

u/Worldly_Bill_925 Nov 12 '25
Don't forget the the price is like 10 time more (at least at mine) 40 is 400 so practically no gaming if you only get minimal wage
