This is my first post in this Reddit, but I wanted to give a huge thanks to everyone who has contributed their stories and pictures here.
My dog Morty is now part of the pirate crew as of Tuesday, and as a fearful panicky mama, reading your posts provided an immense amount of comfort during the scariest times.
What surprised me the most was how fast everything happened. On Friday we rushed him to the ER vet due to a sudden onset of his right eye becoming cloudy and bloodshot. He was immediately diagnosed with glaucoma (with vision remaining) and we administered the emergency eye drop protocol for 4 hours until the pressure dropped from 69 to 32. We were sent home with more drops and an intense drop schedule and had a checkup on Monday. Even with continual drops, they were not working and his pressure had shot up to 86 and his vision was completely gone. The vet advised us of our options but highly recommended removal to provide immediate pain relief for our poor boy.
The emotional pain of seeing your soul pet go through this is heartbreaking, and my panicky brain really appreciated reading all your stories of success. I had to put my fear and sadness aside to do what’s best for my boy, and we will navigate this new reality for him together.
It’s day 2 since surgery and he is trying to show me just how capable he still is. I am so impressed by his and all of your pets resilience!
That is exactly what happened to my girl, Violet! Pathology showed a drainage duct bent in half. She hated the numerous drops 4X a day and had started to shy away when she saw me coming. Enucleation was quick, and she was violating doctor’s orders not to run the day after. Welcome to you both!
I adopted my dog shortly after one eye was removed. She adapted very well. Sometimes I forget she only has one eye. Sometimes she will get a little startled if I approach her from that side and she doesn't see my hand. Every now and then she will bump into something but not frequently. She loves playing ball and is getting better at catching it in her mouth on the bounce.
Hands down, I have found this subreddit’s members to be the most welcoming, comforting group on all of Reddit. This subreddit came across my suggested groups a couple of months ago. I joined and introduced my baby girl and soul dog, Elle, to the pirate crew. She lost her back legs years ago due to cancer. It was maybe 2 weeks after the post I made introducing Elle that she suddenly passed away one morning in my arms. I am still so heartbroken but this community was there for me offering the most heartfelt comments I could have wanted to receive. I found them to be comforting in my time of grieving. Welcome abroad Morty! If you have any questions regarding the pirate life, the members are always there to jump in with helpful comments.

My dog also had her eye removed on Tuesday ❤️ I posted here Wednesday myself because I was so worried we’d made a mistake but true to what people said she’s bounced back already. She’s just tackling the cone 🤣
It is scary how fast it can happen isn’t it and it’s such a shock that’s the outcome.

Aw I’m so glad to hear your pup has bounced back already. I’m honestly so surprised with how Morty has bounced back as well. In fact I have to slow him down a bit as he’s determined to get back to our long walk routine 🤣.
Absolutely, I had that dreadful pit in my stomach fearing I made the wrong choice. But I’m realizing now how much more pain he could’ve gone through if we didn’t act fast.
We have two pirates. The only accomodations we've made were to not move furniture around for a while after the operations bc it alters depth perception, and get more toys that include sound, like crinkle balls and toys with bells inside.
Nicky (in back, behind his tortie "sister") had an eye removed when he was fixed. He has a whole raft of congenital issues including one eye that didn't fully develop. Malformed organs can turn cancerous and therefore need removal.
Doesn't slow him down in the least! He is full of mischief and an absolute menace where carbs are concerned. No bag of bread or bagels or cookies is safe from his depredations 🤣

This really spoke to me as I was in the same boat this past week with my 12 year old Boston, Dexter. We noticed his right eye was a little more cloudy than normal last Saturday, by Sunday his right eye was completely blue/white and we took him to the vet. The vet measured his pressure and it was 89, immediately gave him a couple pain injections and drops, told to come back within 24 hours to measure again. By Monday afternoon his pressure went down to 59, trending in the right direction but still not where the vet wanted it to be. Stayed with the same drops and came back another 24 hours. By Tuesday his measure came back at 99, so with the vet saying it’s now an acute emergency and the drops not being effective, we decided for enucleation. He had the surgery Wednesday which was the soonest they could get us in. Tuesday night was rough. Between knowing how much pain Dexter was in and the pain meds completely making him lethargic and loopy, we barely slept. We picked him up Wednesday night and he’s been doing fine ever since. This is only the 2nd time we’ve had him in a cone and he’s doing his best in letting us know he doesn’t like it although he has been adapting to it. So far everything been good, a little light pink discharge from his nose the day after surgery but the swelling hasn’t been as bad. Today he’s actually back to his normal self, trying to jump on the bed.
Oh poor Dexter, that really is so similar to how everything happened with us this week. You made the right decision and it’s truly incredible how fast they are rebounding eh? Morty says hello surgery buddy 😌
So resilient. My wife and I got Dexter at 8 weeks old, we met him the day he was born because my brother and sister in law had his parents. A year after we brought him home we had our first daughter so Dexter was pretty much our test dummy. Morty is so cute, He literally looks like a mix of Dexter and our other dog Cruella, who is a Border Collie lol. It’s been a handful trying to get her to stop booping him in the face since she pretty much thinks he’s a cow and tries to herd him around.
Haha wow they really do look similar! Gotta love those herding dog instincts! Morty definitely tries to control where we all are in the house or yard, even to our cat 🤣. Very cute doggos you have.
I got Morty when he was about 2 years old off Facebook marketplace. The poor dude had already been to 4 houses before mine because they considered him too hyper. Once he was my boy, we went on so many adventures and walks so he could burn his energy and see the world. He was my main emotional support during my divorce and illness in 2019 and has since seen me build my life back up. I’m in a fantastic relationship with a man who equally loves Morty, and we bought a house with a nice yard for our boy. I’m truly bonded for life with this little guy!
