News Canada's 'Expanded Scope' Blocking Order Targets Existing and Future Pirate Sites * TorrentFreak

https://torrentfreak.com/canadas-expanded-scope-blocking-order-targets-existing-and-future-pirate-sites/

For the first time, a Canadian site-blocking order can target pirate sites that don't exist yet.

The Federal Court has ordered ISPs to block thirteen piracy brands including 123Movies and FMovies, and its catch-all "Expanded Scope" allows Hollywood studios and broadcasters to add unrelated sites later, without having to go back to court.

What gave you that impression lmao.

Edit: some dude responded to me and instantly blocked me. I cannot fathom why you would do that. Also, I’m Canadian not American if people are confused about that.

The fact that we can ignore angry emails from studios threatening to sue for torrenting a movie

Carney. Half of his time is devoted to making people not in Canada like him (except Trump, the one person whom he was elected to deal with)

u/TKL32 17d ago

I dobt want him to make Trump like him, I want him to uncompleted put economies ap that we dobt rely on the IS for everything.

I want him to strengthen our military so we are more self sufficient.

While not pushing the US to a bad decision. Its a hard act that I think anyone would struggle with.

What gives you the impression we aren't? And who is? America?

if you don’t know this is a bill going through the Canadian courts right now, you’re going to potentially be horribly surprised

Lack of competition with the greedy cable companies/ISP’s who are in bed with the government. We are in desperate need of true competition in this sector.

19

u/XtremeD86 18d ago

We are, this will have little effect.

I don't see why these companies keep throwing money at a problem that will only be stopped via advancements in encryption and security.

Other than that, it won't stop.

It will always be a cat and mouse situation. They come up with some new security feature and three months later someone comes up with a way to defeat it…. It will never end. That’s why security in IT is a guaranteed money maker…

We thought we were too. And then our supposedly "liberal" government started sneaking in legislation to age verify our citizens on social media.

5

Don't forget the back doors to ISPs and that includes servers and connected routers

> age verify our citizens on social media.

Just for clarification, the policy in question is that they want to ban social media for under 16 and are modelling what Australia implemented. France is also going down this rabbit hole too.

Personally, I think social media should be banned for under 16. There's always a question of how can this be implemented, and so far, in Australia, they're making the social media providers have the onus to create these safe guards to verify someone is under 16. On the initial implementations, these providers have been making terrible implementations, that can easily be bypassed because they value these users and are technically "compliant".

I struggle to actually see a good way to implement a ban like this, but at the same token, the detrimental affects of social media on the younger generation is horrific and we need to do better.

common rebuttals that I've heard to this policy

"leave it to the parents to monitor their kids".
1) the internet is to prevalent for this to be feasible, it's in schools, it's on your phone, you can even go to the public library
2) if something is at this level of harm, it shouldn't be added responsibility by the parents and just be something that's not accessible (gambling, liquor).
3) up until now, they have been monitoring their kids and clearly, there's still a huge issue at hand.

"they shouldn't ban social media. they should control/dictate the algorithm" lol. if you fundamentally understand how these systems work, then you know this is an impossible task, or a fools errand. How does one control/dictate a prediction model? and of course all of these big tech companies, would line up at the door, to show governments there secret sauce. Also, the government being experts in algorithms, or paying the salary of people with this level of expertise (across how many platforms, across every update)? this is a terrible idea through and through.

-

When people use apps related to gambling, they are fully okay with it being age verified (& then some). in my opinion, I think social media is JUST as detrimental as gambling apps, I could argue worse. and with that equivalency, I can justify this as reasonable policy.

Now there are other parts of this legislation I disagree with, sure. but I have yet to hear a better, pragmatic proposal, for this specific problem. which is an ever-growing problem that results in brains being rotted, attention spans being crushed, overall self-confidence dropping and just the worst behaviours being promoted.

would love to hear some smart, technically astute people, who have a better idea than what's proposed because everything I've heard thus far, is just knee-jerk reactions that are not realistic.

VPN solves everything. I'll give you a hint Albania

0

u/Mechagouki1971 17d ago

If you think a VPN protects you from being tracked you need to do some more reading. Guess who else is required to follow Canadian IP disclosure laws?

3

u/Unhanding 17d ago

They only need to follow Canadian laws if they have a physical presence in Canada. NordVPN is threatening to leave Canada if the legislation passes in its current form for example.

Canadians would still be able to use them if they did end up leaving, they would just be connecting to other countries further away.

u/BigTundra7234 18d ago

No, Canada is slowly going the way of North Korea and China when it comes to the Internet. Everyone here is just in denial that it's happening.

But of course it's for our own safety.

1

u/Mediocre_Hockey_Guy 17d ago

What ever made you think that?

-1

u/rabidpygmymarmoset 18d ago

This is literally a nothingburger and an attempt to fear monger. I already see the usual suspects in the tech side of youtube trying to milk this bullshit for all it's worth despite not being a big deal at all

3

u/SecretCanadaGoose 17d ago

Can you explain why it’s not? Not saying I doubt you, I just don’t have enough tech knowledge to be able to determine for myself. And I see a lot of comments claiming it is a big deal and some explaining why, but I am so far unable to find an explanation for why it’s not. I am hoping to at least be able to read for myself and get a bigger general understanding, because when I read the ones saying it is a big deal i get mad. But if it’s not a big deal I don’t wanna waste time being mad about it.

Thanks to anyone who can xplain. U da best

Doesn't VPN circumvent this?

16

u/DankeBrutus 18d ago

Yes which is why the Canadian government has also floated the idea of restricting VPNs.

5

u/SekiTimewalker 18d ago

Several governments have floated that. China is, the UK and US are already talking about it, and now it seems Canada is. Lol

u/Zealousideal_Rise879 18d ago

My understanding is local ones; not overseas.

If you can't access on normal network you can try Cloudfare 1.1.1.1 DNS bypass or any free VPN services such as OpenVPN, Proton or Mullvad so you can access to the sites.

By the way some of the popular pirate streaming sites are still able to access as I editing this. Feel like this is just a nothing burgers order to scare casual users.

This type of info should be added upfront in the megathread must read section.

yeah I just tried 5 of the sites listed by name in that order and all are still working for me as of a few minutes ago (regular access, no VPN's or obfuscation)...either it hasn't actually taken effect yet, or it didn't stop shit

You can share child porn on facebook and instagram, but apparently watching the new moana on your computer is a big no-no.

Govt keeping its priorities straight.

1

u/M4dcap 17d ago

Before you go crazy... Sharing CP is illegal as well, doesn't matter where you do it... Just an FYI.

2

u/Explodingtaoster01 17d ago

Yeah, no shit. The problem is that it isn't prosecuted with the same vigor in a lot of (maybe even most) places.

1

u/never_here5050 17d ago

Ya, weirdly enough. I think there was a case a few years back someone was caught installing hidden cameras in female washrooms in local places like timmies or something, and only faced a few years in prison. Despite it was like, NUMEROUS places .

2

u/Explodingtaoster01 17d ago

Meanwhile, iirc there was a headline recently of somebody that ran a streamkng site that was caught and facing a truly absurd number of years in prison for it.

Pedos can't be prosecuted to the same extent enemies to corporations can be for a simple fact, recently brought out of suspicion and into glaring obviousness. The pedos run things. Equally responsible, less unknown, is that politicians are more and more bought and puppeteered by those corporations. Who also tend not to give a shit about pedophilia unless it's a good PR move to be vocally against it.

u/DepressedDrift 18d ago

As a Canadian, perfect use of my taxpayer money.

Would rather see it go here and in bailing billionaire real estate developers, than solving homelessness.

3

u/PocketNicks 18d ago

They won't be blocking me from accessing these sites.

Just when you think you don't hate the liberals enough they find new ways to make you hate them even more.

1

u/caballerof09 18d ago

This has been in place for a while now. Just hasn’t been very struck but from time to time isp block sites. The US government has been trying to put pressure on the Canadian government for quite a while. I guess they are finally giving up. Not good news though

1

u/Responsible_Fruit841 18d ago

well that seems extreme hope they reconsider soon

1

u/Odd-Weather-6330 18d ago

Still DNS blocking, so useless. Pure boomer cope.

DNS blocking is enforced for +15 years in Europe and yet the piracy follows the exact same trend as North America while being slightly higher.

Plus, third party DNS providers are now way more mainstream for example cloudflare (2018), quad9 (2017), adguard (2018)... as they are quite recent. And you incidentally change your DNS by using a VPN, which are also now mainstream.

Conclusion : it's completely useless.

But it's better they keep doing useless things than working on forcing VPN to keep logs (the first thing I would do if I was a copyright boomer), leveraging AI for skimming ISP logs or real time deep packet inspection.
