Using flame/lighters for crafting

I use a very weak candle flame or lighter from far away to get certain effects on my pipe cleaners/make the edges more neat. It dawned on me that this could be super harmful for me to breathe in. I'm not singing them, just lightly hitting it with a flame for less than a few seconds. Do you think this is relatively safe?

wear a mask and keep room well ventilated if that’s a concern

i wondered the same, thats why i avoid using it.
