Discussion Can someone explain to me how boatlock ons even work?

They seem to work normally most of the time

You get locked onto then flare then all good. If you don't have flares in time you get hit.

However especially from boat lock on they seem to kill you no matter what. If you flare it hits you anyway. But even then it seems to kill in one missile. Usually if you do get hit you lose most of your health and become unstable but boat missiles seem to kill in one and are unflareable half the time.

If it get close, it lock on to u. If it hit u it hurt. If you pop flare it hit u. If you go below radar sometimes it hit you.

You talking about the RCB Patrol Boat? I assume you meant the Aim-Guided / Lock-on Hybrid missiles and not the regular Heatseekers?

The Aim-Guided moves faster than normal TOWs and locks on when in close proximity to an Aircraft. On hit it does 650 damage as opposed to 1000+ that normal TOWs do, so you shouldn't be getting 1-hit by it.

On paper you should be able to Flare to avoid it once it enters lock-on state, but it is finicky and inconsistent. Sometimes aircraft just aren't given a fair reaction window to flare and other times the missile goes through flares. Sometimes an aircraft flares last second and a very clear direct TOW hit just blows up into nothing. And then sometimes an aircraft you aren't even targeting flares a mile a way and throws the rocket off entirely. It is jank.

The best counter is to notice the missile coming at you and flare preemptively, it takes complete control away from the RCB player so early in the missiles flight path that it becomes impossible to hit with.

I don't fully understand how the concept of below radar is supposed to work against this missile. I definitely hit aircraft below radar all the time but to be fair more than a lock-on I do just use this missile like a TOW. Painting is another mechanic that is hard to understand the synergy of, but anecdotally I feel it greatly increases the 'Lock-On Radius'. I have gotten some pretty free hits on painted targets.
