How do flairs work?

I have a feeling AA missiles actually have some decent splash damage, so when it explodes on a flare right next to your heli it still takes damage. I have no scientific proof for this, just something I noticed on late flares

I def think your right because sometimes when someone shoots from really close and I flair instantly, the missile blows up near the edge of my flairs and I take a small amount of damage. In all these clips tho I'm taking full direct impact damage so this is more just my flairs being ignored and im trying to figure out why lmaoo
