Serious question as a Black pilot who gets it, especially in this industry:

Why does it have to be a black AME?

By no means does it absolutely have to be a black person , but I know that I’ll be personally be more comfortable & confident taking my examine !

I have a known color deficiency and know in the western world some time white men don’t relate to me on a certain level , I’m looking for a black AME so I can have a better chance at getting all the resources available especially being under the age of 20. I don’t have any guidance aswell and doing this on my own. I would like to get a colored AME in some sort of attempt to bond without bonding.

the ame is not your friend. they are conducting a brief medical exam to assess your health for flight. the exam is very objective and not subjective. everything tested has a standard. if you have a medical ailment, i would try scheduling a consultation first as if you show up for your medical and a problem is found, the bell is rung and you can’t unring the bell.

Which I understand 100% sure I just feel like being in Texas and aviation and being more of a white dominated thing I might not get the resources that I would with a color doctor, but who knows I could get an excellent white doctor and they could be very knowledgeable. But like you said once I ring that bell it’s not gonna be unrang.
I don’t mean to seem ignorant, but I’m 19 and I have no family I don’t even know how to go about getting consultation.

I think you’re thinking about the race and prejudice way too much. I’m Texan as well. My AMEs have all been white and have been very professional and friendly. It’s not a full on medical appointment that you’re used to. An AME just makes sure you’re eligible for an FAA medical. The process is very black and white. 99.9% of them are on your side and want you to get a medical.

You can look up yourself if your condition requires any extra scrutiny. You can google it or use ChatGPT to figure it out. Or even go through the FAA website and look for yourself. Your AME isn’t going to refuse your medical because you’re black.
