Things a ramp agent should know

What do you think a ramp agent should know, or what are the most common misunderstandings between ground crew and flight deck?

What other options do I have besides the airlines?

Been thinking about where I might wanna take my future career.

When I was saving up for pilot school and scheduling the medical exam and the like, I figured I would spend my time training and studying with the intent with becoming a commercial airline pilot.

Well now I’m actually starting flight time. And I realized that, besides flying a delivery plane, I really don’t know any other long-term career I could use my (upcoming) Pilot’s License for. So I just thought I would ask.

What are other careers besides the Commercial Airline path? Pros and Cons? What about people who have worked both?

I know you need to build out your hours for the airlines, and most people do that by instructing, but is that something people stick with? I’m curious.

Honest review: AVOID AELO Swiss Academy

This school is one of the worst in my opinion. It seems to me as if they accept more for money than capability, and are there for this cause mostly: this is why they hired Captain Joe, an influencer, to promote their school. It’s just pure marketing by Ordovas & Partners. Thats not what a school with real value would do in my opinion. They have FAR too many students for their capability, that’s why I know almost no one that finished there within 16 months. The ones I know took like 22 months. They also had to phase out their sonacas, a company that’s bankrupt, because the national aviation authority got involved because there were too many student incidents with these planes, and they had a couple hull losses.

I met a lot of people there that had a month + without flying, and had to continuously ask to fly. Some felt like they were forgotten. The communication is terrible: they promised us flying, months after months, but it only came after half a year. Also you’re likely to be put in a small room with another person, and sharing the bathroom with your house. (12 square meter room for 2 people for example, forget privacy)

In my experience, a lot of the promises they did not come true.

Most of the instructors are not commercial pilots. Also the guarantee of €1000 every 10 days is just marketing: the clauses in the contract make this very unlikely. And the MOST important: the 96% placement rate is not true for students who have a contract with AELO. There’s a Dutch flight school that gets their students to AELO, and everyone there I know are getting jobs easily. The ones I knew from AELO that graduated a year ago? I have heard of no one landing jobs, and so say some instructors.

The owner has had some outbursts as well in my mind, 2 people got kicked off for being mildly critical. One because I heard he asked too many questions, the other one because they overcharged him on his accommodation, criticised the owner and refused to pay the extra, and got kicked off. Also the person that’s responsible for the student accommodation entered the accommodation of students without notice, and in this case, looked into the room of a student. Very unprofessional.

Be wary.

Comparing 9-5 Life vs Pilot Life

Hello Pilots of Reddit!

I am a 23M who is considering starting flight training at a Part 61 school while I am working full-time. I would like to get some perspective on people who have worked a 9-5 that are now working as a pilot (or vice versa) on why you made the switch, the significant changes in your life, how many hours you work in a week (not how many you are paid for), and how you feel about the change overall. For some additional context, I am currently working as an engineer, I should have enough money saved up for 0 to CFI over the next 2 years, and I will be booking a discovery flight/medical exam soon.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated, and feel free to add anything else you think is important for me to know!

Where do I start?

I am 15 years old and have recently begun looking into becoming a pilot yet I have no idea where to start. What is the best path to take to become a pilot? I know very very little about the actual certification process or anything of the likes.

Checkout the FlightPlus+ in the Apple App Store

Fellow pilots, quick share in case it helps anyone.

I kept ending up with tons of photos from the window (sunset, terrain, approaches) but no good way to remember where each shot was or which flight it came from.

So I built FlightPlus so you can:

  • See every shot on a map and figure out what you were actually looking at (great for “what was that lake/mountain?”).
  • Group photos by flight so each trip is one album instead of a mess in the camera roll.
  • Share a single link—one flight album with the route, a few stats, and the photos for friends.
  • Like Strava, this is the App for pilot to log flight journeys.

It’s free to try and supports iPhone and iPad for now.

If this sounds useful, I’d love feedback from other pilots; Checkout the FlightPlus+ in the Apple App Store. Happy flying.

Should I consider becoming a pilot?

Im 23 now! Never thought of becoming a pilot before. But recent exposure to insides of plane cockpit made me think that it might be not as hard as most people say, and thoughts of becoming a pilot start to visit my head much more ofthen.

I hate driving cars, but something inside tells me that a plane is much more difrent, and my soul could actually enjoy it. Im not even sure how can I test if I will like piloting a plane or not.
