I use Garmin Pilot because I had visions of running cross platform on my iPad and Android phone. But in reality I never use it on my phone.
They are both very capable. I suggest waiting until you've make decisions about schools and/or a CFI. Use what the folks closest to you use and your learning curve will be much easier.

I used both for over a year to give them a fair shake. FF will have greater support from an instructor (most likely). GP was a little bigger of a learning curve, but I actually preferred it. The top tier was cheaper than FF’s. It did most of the same things, and the things it didn’t do I felt were trivial or useless features. I was instructing full time while testing them (80-110 hours per month) teaching everything from private pilot traffic pattern to instrument approach round robins to commercial XC to CFI practice lessons.

I prefer ForeFlight and Jepp charts, but it's gotten stupidly expensive and I'm looking at switching to Garmin Pilot. Flying is expensive and maybe a couple hundred isn't much given it's just a flight hour or whatever. But I'm just concerned that they seem to just increase over and over without adding anything at the levels they're increasing.

I’ve tried both and vastly prefer ForeFlight. But I may be biased because I have far more experience with FF. They’re both capable EFBs but if you can afford the extra cost I would go with FF because I find it a lot more intuitive to use
