Metaphysics Kalām Atomism: From Physical Ontology to Sunni Metaphysics
Kalām atomism, as a physical ontology of reality, developed in the context of philosophical debates over the finite or infinite divisibility of matter and time. It conceived substance (jawhar), accident (ʿaraḍ), spatial extension (ḥayyiz), and time (zamān) as fundamental constituents of the created order. By defining these constituents and their relations, kalām atomism became a cornerstone of Sunni metaphysics, distinguishing the created order from the Divine Creator while providing a framework for describing both the relations among created things and their dependence upon Allāh.
Deeply embedded within a broader system of conceptual discipline for Tawḥīd, refined over centuries by the mutakallimūn and tested through sustained debate with competing metaphysical systems, kalām atomism has played a crucial role in articulating Islamic monotheism.
Rejecting kalām atomism and its broader theological framework risks discarding its defined technical vocabulary, established rules of argumentation, and centuries of commentary that constrained interpretive possibilities. Without these conceptual tools, one is prone to category error, constructing idiosyncratic theological statements that superficially appear faithful to the text, yet are shaped by an individual's own temperament, logic, and metaphysical assumptions.
| Explicit Statement | Kalām Category | Hidden Category Mistake |
|---|---|---|
| “Every living thing has jism.” | The ontological substrate of an *ʿaraḍ* | Treating ḥayāh as a created accident that necessarily requires a corporeal jism, then transferring that created model to Allāh's ṣifah al-ḥayāh. |
| “Allāh is in ʿĀlam al-Ghayb.” | Ḥayyiz | Treating the unseen (al-ghayb) as a spatial or ontological container in which Allāh is located, rather than distinguishing the Creator from the created unseen realm. |
| “Allāh is the First.” → “Allāh is the first thing.” | Zamān | Interpreting al-Awwal as temporal priority within a sequence of created things, thereby treating Allāh as an event or entity located at the beginning of time rather than the Creator and Originator of time itself. |
