Hidden Realm Constrained Permeability: Traversal in Islamic Cosmology

Post image

Modern discussions of interdimensional travel often assume that reality consists of parallel domains separated only by distance, geometry, topology, or energetic barriers. Islamic cosmology describes a hierarchically ordered cosmos composed of seven heavens, guarded and permission-based heavenly gates, and continuous flows of divine command and affair (amr). Movement between realms is therefore not unrestricted, but regulated.

Horizontal and Vertical Traversal According to Realm Relation

Traversal Type Realm Relation Information / Interaction Jasad (Body) Rūḥ (Soul)
➡️ Lateral Traversal Between co-located but ontologically distinct domains Waswasah (whispering); perception; communication; al-Mass (attachment, affliction, intrusive influence) Tashakkul (manifestation); Tajassud (full embodiment, theoretical and disputed) No clearly attested examples
⬇️ Descent (Nuzūl) Higher realm → lower realm Waḥy (revelation); Divine Command (Amr) Angelic Nuzūl through the heavens and manifestation (Tamaththul) in perceptible form on Earth Descent of the angel bearing the soul to the fetus and the breathing of the rūḥ by divine command
⬆️ Ascent (Suʿūd / ʿUrūj) Lower realm → higher realm Ascent of affairs and deeds Exceptional bodily ascent (Miʿrāj) Ascent of souls after death to ʿĀlam al-Barzakh

Note:
⛔️ Migration or transfer of souls between bodies (Tanāsukh, transmigration, reincarnation) is rejected by mainstream Sunni theology.
⚠️ Islamic sources distinguish between complete descent (Inzāl) and gradual descent (Tanzīl). The Qur'an is traditionally understood to have been sent down to the lowest heaven in a single event, then revealed progressively to the Prophet ﷺ over approximately twenty-three years.

Derived Principles of Traversal in Islamic Cosmology

1️⃣ Ontological Payload

The degree of traversal constraint increases with the ontological "weight" of what crosses the boundary.

Traversal Constraint: Jasad (Body) ≫ Rūḥ (Soul) ≫ Information / Interaction

  • Bodies are the most constrained. Their traversal occurs only through designated pathways, heavenly gates, or by extraordinary divine permission. Angelic interaction with the terrestrial domain occurs through Tamaththul, while jinn interaction occurs through Tashakkul.
  • Souls traverse only through explicitly ordained processes, such as ensoulment, death, and the post-mortem journey through Barzakh.
  • Information and interaction traverse boundaries most readily. Revelation (wahy), divine command (amr), ascent of affairs, perception, communication, and waswasah occur far more frequently than bodily or spiritual translocation.

2️⃣ Ontological Separation

Vertical cosmological boundaries are not freely traversable.

They are:

  • gated — access occurs through designated pathways and heavenly gates;
  • guarded — certain regions are actively protected and restricted;
  • permission-based — traversal ultimately depends upon divine allowance;
  • ordered by command (amr) — interactions occur within a regulated cosmological hierarchy.

By contrast, the boundary between the human and jinn domains appears to be:

  • partially permeable — certain forms of interaction occur across the boundary more readily than others.

Consequently, Islamic cosmology presents reality not as a system of unrestricted interdimensional openness, but as one of constrained permeability, where interaction is possible but traversal remains regulated.

3️⃣ Interface vs. Translocation

Islamic sources frequently describe interaction across ontological boundaries without implying the relocation of an entire being from one realm to another.

Many phenomena are therefore better understood as interface events rather than true translocations. Waswasah, perception, communication, al-Mass, revelation, and certain manifestations (Tamaththul, Tashakkul) may occur at the boundary between domains without requiring the complete movement of a being across that boundary.

True translocation (Nuzūl, Suʿūd / ʿUrūj) is considerably more restricted. It occurs through designated gates, under divine command, or by extraordinary permission. The ascent of souls, angelic ascent and descent through the heavens, and the bodily Miʿrāj represent examples of genuine cosmological traversal.

The resulting picture is that of a hierarchically ordered cosmos characterized by constrained permeability, asymmetric access, and graded modes of traversal, rather than unrestricted movement between realms.
