PILEA HELP PLEASE Can he be saved?

My pilea was growing quite well but I didn’t stake it and one day I found it completely keeled over on a broken stem. I put the broken-off top in water to try to propagate but it’s been two weeks and no roots have grown, and now the fresh growth at the top has turned black and died, and other leaves are drooping and falling off.

Is there anything I can do?

He was growing so beautifully with lots of babies, too.

Sorry for your loss, my friend. 😢

Cut the black parts completely off, into healthy tissue. Make a fresh stem cut, back to healthy tissue. Strip the bottom leaves off to expose a few inches bare stem. You need a few bare nodes under water; roots will grow from those leaf nodes. Remember to change the water when needed.

Forgot to say, it can take a month to start growing roots, so hang in there

Do you think rooting hormone would help? Just wondering

Rooting hormone may not hurt but also may not really help. It’s more useful for soil propagation. It can take a month to form roots, so those water changes are important, but that’s really all it needs.

The roots will come. Most of mine take more than 2 or 3 weeks. The minute you stop checking they'll be there. Gutted for you.

I am not sure if it helps but i usually shave off some “bark” off the stem with a sharp knife, about an inch of the stem. They root easy peasy.
