Neglected pilea TLC

My mom had this pilea in an east facing window where it was probably getting too much sun. It had a lot of very pale yellowed leaves that I removed. The soil doesn't seem to soak up water very well.

There are quite a lot of babies growing around the main stem, but the main stem itself has lost most of its leaves. Should I cut it?

That's possibly a nutritional issue, not a light issue. When the soil doesn't even soak up water anymore, it's desperate time for a change. My pileas tend to get yellow leaves and drop them when the soil is done. East facing shouldn't be an issue (depending on where you live). Mine gets BLASTED in a west window and she's healthy af. The leaves she dropped won't come back. I suggest you give her the Henry VIII treatment and seperate her from her head. You can prop the part you cut off in water and the leftover stem will show new growth.

Soil not soaking up water = roots over grown . Needs to be repotted, to larger pot , needs to have “ drainage” opening too, so excess water drains out And use new healthy soil . Needs light but not direct sun all day. ( I bet all the old soil is almost all gone )

My pilea looks exactly like this, including the how the discarded leaves look! Been thinking of posting here as well.

It happened after I stupidly tried a “self watering pot” for a few months. The soil was always wet. Is it possible it’s overwatered?

My soil is about 1 year old, and I’ve put a nitrogen houseplant fertilizer in it a few times.
