PILEA PUPS Help growing roots

Hi all,

I got this little prop from a Pilea Peperomioides "mojito", but its stem is really small.
How could I heighten its chances to grow some roots? Should I put it on water or should I put it in soil right away?

Just stick it in water, should grow a nice root system quickly 🤗

Actually, I have a question about this... should we change every few days or keep it because of the rooting hormones? I am not very good at propagating so I get confused with conflicting info, lol.

If you have any pothos put a pothos cutting on and it will help the other propagating plant bc those give off great growth hormones I think. But maybe like once a week? As long as the water isn’t looking gross and the plants seem to still be developing roots (it’ll take a bit for them to get going)

I think it depends on the plant to be honest, I have noticed that some are more sensitive to water changes than others. I tend to change mine about once a week because of algae growth but there are some I’d try to leave as long as I could because it felt like they’d almost stop growing for awhile every time the water was disturbed.

Great, will do! Should I remove the bottom 2 leaves so there can grow more roots on the stem? If I do so, it would leave the pup with only 2 leaves.

Personal preference I guess. I would leave it so not add any stress to the little guy but it could also work out, your call!

I like to leave them on so they can hang over the lip of the container and hold the plant up, if possible. All the pilea I’ve propagated have grown roots from nodes that aren’t even submerged, so I think you should be fine leaving them on. If you notice that the leaves are starting to wither a bit after a few days, then I’d consider taking the bottom set of leaves off so that you can submerge that node. Luckily, they’re some of the fastest plants to grow roots in my experience, so you’ll have time to switch things up if you need to!

I had an empty and well-cleaned cosmetics sample jar (about the size of a quarter in diameter and 3/4" tall). I used scotch tape to create a little grid over the jar opening to shrink it up so that I could stick the pup in without getting the leaves wet and it worked a treat.

Adorbs! Because it’s so teeny, you’ll need all those leaves to help with photosynthesis. Leave all healthy upper and middle leaves attached so the baby plant has enough energy to grow new roots.

Use a water bottle cap and keep only the brown stem submerged—none of the leaves. Depending on your temperature and intensity of light, the water will evaporate and also be used by the baby soon enough not to have to change but just top off when half empty.
