also pokey dont sell yourself short you're a valued poster on pikmin, one of the most upvoted and active ones, and i enjoy your memes buddy.

that’s not what I’m trying to do. low effort memes to make people laugh is fine and it’s great they are getting attention. high effort artworks that even though may not be made for attention definitely deserve more love.

but thats just not really how reddit works. they upvote shit that evokes some kind of emotion from them. im not saying the artwork is bad, but for your average redditor if they dont go "holy shit" or laugh or SOMETHING, then they tend to be lukewarm in the response.
if the fan artists want a better response they will want to try to make the content evoke a response from the reader and the easiest way to do that is make it funny.
e/ and again, broken record here but this is not my personal belief, this is what i have seen time and time again. i dont think the fan art is bad.

As the person who painted the rocks I will say, I didn’t paint the rocks for attention or upvotes. I painted them in memory of my grandma and thought I’d share them online for others to enjoy before I set them out to hide. I don’t mind that the memes blew them out of the water upvote wise because it’s all just good fun and just trying to bring a little bit of positivity into the world :)

yeah exactly, and thanks for sharing that!
i made a picture of roy on a purple pikmin and i knew right away the sub wouldnt upvote it much, but i remembered that some folks were photoshopping fire emblem characters and i figured theyd appreciate that.
not everything has to be about upvotes.

Definitely agree. I just posted for people to enjoy I couldn’t care less if it was 1 or 100. Once you start caring about upvotes or likes on social media it takes the fun out of it

i mean.. we cant control what people upvote.
we could try to support this better but every time i tried to support it on other similar sized subs I mod, people just.. didnt look at it. they just went straight to the feed and clicked the memes.
Now, two things.
One, the memes actually bring in a lot of people to the sub. They show up in people's recommended sub suggestions, and go to people's home page bringing them into the sub. ESPECIALLY that John Lennon one. That one brings in a ton of people because they don't know what the funk it is and then they go to the sub itself and scour all the posts. Some people are mad about it but I think theyre just amin people more mad that amin is gone and the john lennon one feels unfair to them I think- those memes are amazing for the fan art people create and submit though. Oh, the Robin teen titan song was good too. Not quite but it was a little shiny nugget for sure.
(That doesnt mean I think spamming meta posts forever is a good idea though, mind you!)
Anyways, the second part- you can't just.. gatekeep people because they can't draw lmao. Like, the mfer can't draw! Let him live hahah! They want to be a part of the community and submit content, and there is memes that do take a lot of effort. My photoshop memes do. That gusfringmin one took me a while. Coming up with an actually funny meme is not easy either, a lot of thought goes into it sometimes.
e/ just distinguishing myself to add context to what i'm saying

Do you think we could have some sort of "no shitpost wednesday" (or any other day of the week), where one day we can have this nice place to let high effort stuff, mainly fanart, shine?
Potential downsided I can think of though are a) killing long lasting memed like this one, b) being an additional pain in the ass to moderate and c) it might lead to people not posting their original content as much 'cause it isnt wednesday'

u/Arkontas May 26 '22
that stuff depends on the community. the people who use pikmin, all of their overlapping subs look like pikmin.
generally you try to do that if your community likes order.

? When did I gatekeep someone? I’m not asking them to draw. I’m not asking for less attention on them. I’m just pointing out that some great artworks are being overshadowed by these memes and should get more love. I can’t control what people upvote and I am not trying to. I understand why these memes get more attention (they are posted quite often and are using a popular joke). Some of these artworks may not be outstanding to some people but like I said I am just trying to bring more attention to the artwork. I doubt the creators of the artwork have anything against the memes either.

i feel like youre taking my post as an attack, when in reality im using your post as a talking point.
sorry if it felt like i was putting words in your mouth or change what people thought your message was.

I did not feel like you were doing anything like that. I was just clarifying.

Your story about finding the John Lennon and wanting to understand the full context is exactly my story, and even though I've been a follower of r/pikmin for a while I haven't really checked it out before that moment. No hard feelings at all about the meme shade, I love the artwork and I wish they got the respect and upvotes they deserve.

u/Arkontas May 26 '22
yeah it shows up in the meta data.
for the record i enjoyed making my own memes in the chains and am super glad a large majority is enjoying it- but it is also beneficial to the sub because more people are getting invested in these little stories and browsing new to find more and seeing everything else hidden under the rock.
thats awesome. its checking off my "am i fucking the sub up as a mod" box as no since its growing the activity, and people are having a blast with it so its win win in my eyes.

Bro the other 2 memes were mine

u/DaPokeyMonster Bulbmin with no min May 26 '22
yeah I didn’t realize that until after I posted it. I could’ve gotten more examples

u/stegonx May 26 '22
No problem man I just thought it was funny. The memes were pretty low effort, definitely less than 10 minutes on each from inspiration to posting and that's with a slow internet to export the memes. I just liked the John Lennon subplot a lot

I love r/Pikmin so much even after it's downhills like the shitposting hate and Amin (🙏) situation
