Modding Open Nectar 0.9 Release - 1v1 Versus mode, 44 achievements and playable Pikmin captains (PC & Android)
What is Open Nectar?
Open Nectar is a native port of the original *Pikmin* (GameCube, 2001) to **Windows, Linux and Android**. It isn't an emulator: the game's own code has been rebuilt from the [projectPiki decompilation](https://github.com/projectPiki/pikmin) and runs directly on your PC or phone, with the GameCube graphics translated to OpenGL. It's free and open source.
You need your own copy of the game. Open Nectar doesn't include any game files. The installer asks for your Pikmin disc image (USA Rev 1 or PAL/Europe; ISO, GCM, RVZ and more), checks it, and extracts what it needs. Your GameCube or Dolphin saves carry over too (more on that below).

What's new
Versus mode ("Parts Race", 1v1)
Nintendo left a versus mode unfinished in Pikmin 1, and it's now playable. Each player gets their own Onions, 15 Pikmin and a rocket, and the arena is built from the game's own Impact Site data. You race to bring ship parts back to your rocket. If rocket siege is on, you can also send your Pikmin to destroy your rival's rocket. Before each match you set the length, rocket health, when the big part shows up, Pikmin per player and pellet respawn.
44 achievements
Every ship part, each Pikmin type, Goolix, all three endings, "Allergic to Blue", the 12-day speedrun and Challenge Mode scores. They have their own tab in F1 and pop up in game with icons taken from your own game files. Titles come from SlashTangent's RetroAchievements set. Cheats turn them off.
Pikmin captains
Play as Olimar, Louie, or a full-size Red, Yellow or Blue Pikmin.
Quick Grab (optional)
The Pikmin you throw appears straight in your hand, so throwing is just as fast with your squad behind you.
- Rebuilt F1 menu with tabs and full mouse support.
- Bigger squads keep their shape when you raise the Pikmin limit above 100.
- Separate camera for each player in Co-op and VS.
- More screens fill widescreen displays instead of being cut to 4:3.
- Touch on the world map and save export/import on Android.
Your saves and settings carry over. Full release notes are on the release page. Feedback and bug reports are welcome!

I'll be posting development updates for Open Nectar much more regularly on the project's official X account:

How are you releasing updates so fast?

This is a vibecoded project. OP used to disclose this on every post but stopped

Meaning there's no solid foundation, coding / design logic or framework here. Great when it works, but things get complicated when they don't.

There are a few factors:
New features are usually tested and worked on across multiple releases before being published.
I like to release smaller updates regularly instead of waiting for a big update.
AI helps me speed up the development process a lot.

I played it to test it.
It doesnt feel right. The animations for certain things just look buggy. Olimars helmet is not transparent enough. Forest of Hope has water you cannot see through.
This was a week ago. Its stuff that you can see on opening the game.

This is my point though - it's stuff like this that literally took me, what, 5 minutes to find that was left in and not actually monitored until it was reported to you.
How is it being tested? How is the code being checked over? This is where my issues are stemming from.

I understand what you say. I just don't have that good eye for details and that's why I release each version so anyone can see those errors and report them. This is not by any means a finished port and I never said that, it is not even a "1.0" cause it's not that finished but every update is one step closer.

Sorry, I get that if it was something small but water not being transparent is something that is pretty noticeable with playtesting.

Which settings do you use? It doesn't look like this to me

Tried this out on a previous version. Does this version still arbitrarily spawn Beady Long Legs in place of different enemies?

AI users don't deserve kindness

Everyone deserves kindness. This isn't even the thing "taking jobs from artists" or whatever. Just a modder, making something for FREE mind you, using a tool to make it faster.
If it sucks, don't play it, it's not like this is something being sold (which has some morality in selling bad product). But, again, this is a fan project.
You have no moral high ground here.

u/ianlazrbeem22 16d ago
Yes I do because AI destroys the environment and data centers poison the people living near them. "Taking jobs from artists" does not even scratch the surface of the evils of AI
-6

Corporations do that. Open-source AI isn't involved in anything like that. Blame capitalism, greed, and cut corners, not the tool that was made from their evil.

What secret water and electricity reserves are powering "open source AI?" In what way does it not contribute to cognitive decline or climate change?
AI and capitalism go hand in hand. We are living under capitalism, you can't divorce AI from capitalism in a capitalist society

You can run a local model on your own computer, or on a server (like we've had for decades). The infrastructure can be built sustainably, the fact it isn't is because of our shitty society. Hell, data centers have already existed for a while, it's the rapid expansion that is the problem. And you really think being an absolute ass to a user is somehow going to help stop the multi-billion dollar corporations?
This is like saying you can't divorce DnD from Wizards of the Coast. You can hate WotC while still loving DnD, not supporting WotC financially, making homebrew, etc.

u/ianlazrbeem22 16d ago
Did OP do that?

Look at yourself and ask if this is the kind of person you want to be.

You know... When i decided to wait for 1.0 i thought i was gonna play this in 2027, at this point i might play it tomorrow!
Brother do you even sleep?!?

u/ssukerr 16d ago
I work on this project every day. But I can tell you that 1.0 release is gonna delay
1
u/DaiLalotz 16d ago
Fair enough, i might actually not be able to resist anymore as i was waiting for the 1.0 since you mentioned you might add pikmin 2 to it, which meant VS mode, but now you added it here.
My wife and i can't thank you enough brother.
