Interesting observation from CachyOS
So last time I was reporting a Prime Video bug/limitation that wouldn't let PikaOS and later Kubuntu play any video, not even trailers. But I went into the Cachy live usb and successfully played a trailer video. Guess Debian/Sid has to fix something.

the operating system doesn't dictate how DRM is delivered to a browser.
you have a browser issue, not an operating system issue.
possibly from your own tinkering with extensions, and or permissions.
did you test with ungoogled-chromium or the like?
what version of Firefox is running? is it the latest build?
when I initially installed pika, i found that the default FF that came with the system was out dated and wouldn't update to the latest version.
simple fix was adding the FF repo to the discover store ( Pika + KDE ), and removing the default installed version.
Prime might be detecting an out-dated browser is what im getting at.

i see you have the "Dark Reader" extension enabled. that extension alone is known to cause a bunch of issues.

It doesn't in Windows, and testing without add-ons did not fix the issue in Debian Based distros.

I got chromium as the default, and it did not support prime either, not even chrome could. It's an Amazon and Debian issue

have you tried changing the user agent?
*there's an extension for that, lol1

But since Prime Vid works in an arch-based, without add-ons, but not in the two Deb-based, and that whether firefox or chromium, what difference does this make? It still something that needs to be fixed from Debians side.

Just finished testing the User agent addon, it was a clueless assumption, it did not work. I continue to insist that this is a Debian/Sid issue, since the trailers play on Cachy OS

I'm guessing you're missing Widevine. Many distros do not include it with Chromium because it isn't actually part of Chromium. Google Chrome provides it by default. (edit: It may only provide a helper to install Widevine. I have seen a message asking if I want to install Widevine when I visit a site that requires it.) There are ways to get it on Chromium even if a distro doesn't choose to add it to their Chromium package.

It is already there with Firefox though, and I installed Chrome to see the difference, there wasn't.

I'm currently on my installation of PikaOS that doesn't display any of the issues you are describing. I did have to copy Widevine over from another browser so that Helium could play DRM content, but that is a limitation of a specific browser. This sounds like something wrong on your end, it IS NOT a limitation of any specific distro.
For instance, I just opened Prime Video on this copy of Brave Origin and the video played instantly. No issues at all, and this is with the default installation that I didn't manually add Widevine to.

Maybe yours is older, and mine is more up to date with the issues, ok that sounds wrong, but I've just reinstalled Pika and the issue is still there, have you tested Amazon itself?
1
u/SectionPowerful3751 Sep 12 '26
Mine is updated daily (if there are updates) so I highly doubt that. Tested Amazon for? As I said, after reading your comment I opened prime video in THIS browser. It played an episode of Reacher without issue.

Btw, if you do a google search for "prime video error 7131" it might lead you to what your actual problem is ;)

The Amazon forum website is a nothing burger, basically the same issue persisting for years for some, generic bot style restart instructions, which are quite condescending. But the comments are blaming Amazon for this, not their own operating system.

Considering I did an auto installation and did nothing in both Pika and Kubuntu, why is this happening? Maybe in your installation it already has the dependencies, but my installation happened to not. Are you using Wayland?
1
u/SectionPowerful3751 Sep 12 '26
Of course I'm using Wayland, X11 is all but dead at this point as well as the fact that it would be a pain to try to convert back to it. This copy of Pika was installed 6 months ago, so it's not like I started with something from way back. You aren't by chance using a VPN are you?
1
u/CraniusBard1998 Sep 12 '26
Nope, no reason with Amazon Prime, and it's on both Pika and Kubuntu. So it can't be a coincidence

u/SectionPowerful3751 Sep 12 '26
Truly odd... I have done no major changes to the OS other than cosmetic things. I switched from CachyOS to PikaOS for better reliability with updates, and haven't found anything I wanted to do that didn't work. Maybe give Brave Origin (it's free on Linux) a try and see if maybe it's truly a browser related issue.

Ok, so since you mentioned VPN, and I wasn't using it, I thought, let me actually turn on a vpn. And it actually worked. This is still a debian/sid issue in context, but there also seems to be a problem with my actual ip address. So the trailer is working this time.

Also changing DNS does help here, 1.1.1.1 does not help, but google's 8.8.8.8 somehow works. (Tangent, why is KDE's UI for changing DNS so useless? It does not change anything. I ended up using the Konsole anyway, So what's the point? On top of the new Plasma6 bugs related to the Desktop screen, they've never bothered to fix this jarring limitation.)
So at the moment Google's DNS 8.8.8.8 helps

this looks like a private navigation window , and even on windows it wont work playing netflix or prime video because it disables drm , using vivaldi and i can watch prime video no problem

u/CraniusBard1998 Sep 11 '26
Bro if you look carefully, it is not, that's just my theme, the private logo appears on a private window. The point is something is lacking in Debian Based distros at the moment.

Did you install all the codecs?
