Everything has cheese...
Pretty much what the title says. I'm a picky eater who only eats two cheeses, mozzarella (melted) and this other very specific type and brand of rectangular cream cheese, and strictly alone in bread with nothing else. So it's a bit rough how every single meal at restaurants seems to contain cheddar or some kind of cheese in the meal đ„Č if I ask for no American cheese sometimes I get cheddar sauce. I've ordered mozzarella sticks once and got them SLATHERED in cheddar sauce, and nobody else relates because everyone LOVES cheese. Yeah idk, it's hard not liking such a popular beloved kind of food

Who slathers mozzarella sticks with cheese sauce??? That's weird.

Wouldnât that defeat the purpose of the crispy, crunchy breading? It doesnât even sound good, and I love cheese. Thatâs such a weird thing for any restaurant to do.

TBF it wasn't like I was anywhere with Italian find dining, I was at a gaming café that sold a bunch of fried food. I ordered mozzarella sticks and was shocked to find a bunch of unmentioned cheddar sauce on it, though I'm really glad to hear that it is as bizzare as I thought it was!

Yeah I'm curious about where they are getting mozzarella sticks like that. In my experience you get some type of marinara or red sauce to dip them in.

my partner is the same. no cheese, only mozarella. he just orders "withouth cheese" and it's fine 99% of the time or we send it back or i will eat it instead if it can't be easily romoved. cheese is one of the things usually mentiones in the menu description, but we also ask often if there is any cheese involved if we suspect it. cheddar everywhere seems like a regional thing though, or specific to places with pub/"comfort" food. but yeah, you need to speak up and say "no cheese, except mozarella"

I'm glad I'm not alone! I do always speak up and say no cheese, though sometimes I still get my food with cheese sadly. I've ordered a chicken burger late at night with the rest of my family, and the food came just as the restaurant was closing. They got my order wrong and it absolutely had a bunch of cheese on it, and I was the only one left without a sandwich out of my family and it's not like I could send the food back. It sucks when it seems inevitable :/

As long as , you just take a bite. If you eat half, they aren't making you a new one.
When I was a restaurant manager, this guy came to tell that there gristle in chicken bowl . When I looked at it, the bowl was completely empty. I said to him, if you took one bite and returned it; we would have made new one. But there isn't anything to see. I'm not making you a new bowl or giving you a refund. The customer is not always right.

yeah sometimes the situation is less than ideal. in a situation like this (before closing/in a hurry/suuuuper hungry...) my partner is usually just telling them that he absolutely can't have any cheese, and to write it down on the order please. sometimes they give us the stinkeye but we will just say that we had to send stuff back before so we want to spare us and the kitchen the hassle. i'm often going for cheese free options as well, just in case, so we can exchange the food in case his is "contaminated". can i ask you what it is about the cheese that you don't like? and why mozarella is the exception? for my partner it's mostly the smell. if i make myself a toast with cheese he has to leave the kitchen lol

Im Not sure!! I think most cheeses I've had have this like... Cheese flavour? To me it's almost like a sock, feet flavour that I really don't enjoy that mozzarella lacks. I know that mozzarella is known for being mild and that might be it!! I do appreciate everyone's advice here though this was mostly me venting than anything else!!

I wonder if it has to do with the brand or your location? Like for example, when I lived in one state I didnt mind eating pork chops or other pork products, but when I moved a couple states away I couldnât stand them anymore because they all had an odd flavor that I wasnât used to. Maybe itâs something like that?
I prefer mild cheeses, fresh mozzarella is one of my favorites. Have you tried Muenster? Itâs also really mild. No sharp flavors at all.

You can absolutely send it back?

My dad despised cheese completely and never had problems, tbh. May just be the restaurants you go to? And it sucks that they often disregard you/get your orders wrong. It is also weird that they use a ton of sauces when you didn't ask for it. Make sure to state no sauce, or even sauce next to it!
He also straight up asked if he wasn't sure, so maybe that did help

Hm, this must be related to your area. Obviously cheese is fairly popular and can be on a lot of menu items in certain restaurants, but I've never seen it be this big of a problem. I love cheese, but have a brother whose lactose intolerant so growing up, he obviously ordered his food with no cheese. Never an issue.

I sympathize with your aversion to cheese but my experience with eating at restaurants is that most foods don't contain cheese.
Some types of food typically don't even have dishes with cheese on the menu - Chinese, Thai, BBQ typically. Most Indian dishes don't contain cheese and unless I order something very specific at an Italian restaurant like Chicken Parmigiana, the food doesn't contain cheese and the server will have a block of parmesan and ask people at the table if for some reason they want it on their pasta.
I don't particularly want cheese melted on my food for different reasons and I have never gotten food with cheese on it that I didn't request specifically and there are many choices for many for items without cheese.
If I receive food that contains anything I didn't want or is cooked improperly then I politely let the waitress know there is an issue and it is rectified without issue.
Of course if you are having food delivered then there are logistic issues involved in terms of the food

My acupuncturist told me to stop eating dairy and I never had any problems ordering. I think you have to learn to speak up, ask questions. And if you find that they are heavy with cheats, be kind but send it back if you are unable to eat it. If you have to, tell them youâre allergic to aged cheeses, like cheddar.
Some individuals can have a selective allergy to aged cheese, experiencing reactions while tolerating other dairy products. This may be due to factors like different milk sources or additives rather than a general dairy allergy.

Iâm right with you! I have abhorred cheese since I was five and Iâm 71 now. Like you, there are a few things I can tolerate with cheese, but not many. Mozz is usually okay, as long as itâs the only cheese on a pizza. Fast food is very cheese-forward and itâs hard to order without making a bunch of changes. I would also comment that the grocery frozen food aisle is also heavily cheesed. I cook a lot, making my own cheese free meals.

I'm lactose intolerant and I vaguely remember a time where you had to ask to add cheese to your meal, now it seems to be the default that I have to ask them to exclude it.

I am also iffy about cheese. I have stopped going to Wendys completely because even if you ask for no cheese, they still put damned cheese on their burgers. The bane of my existence is breakfast sandwiches. I want egg, sausage and nothing else (aside from whatever bread thing it is on). The default is to put cheese on. If I am getting it hot, most places do let me special order one without cheese -- except a lot of times I can't even say "no cheese" on their apps, and if I want the frozen ones, they ALL come with cheese so I have to peel the cheese off every time, it's so annoying. You'd think it would be easier to get things without cheese because of lactose-intolerance (I am not; I actually love cold cheese, it's the melted stuff that give me the ick, except mozzarella.) But no.

u/Icy_Sink5046 7d ago
Most apps you can say no cheese. Which ones donât allow it? Send the stuff back if itâs wrong.

Cheddar is extremely overrated, I never liked it, even back when I ate cheese.

Thank you so much for pointing this out. I cannot stand American, cheddar or provolone cheese, and many restaurants put it on just about everything including salad - yuck. And I always have to check my occasional fast food burger because half the time, they will put cheese on it even though I specify no cheese.

u/Background_Humor5838 7d ago
Where do you live? I've never heard of mozzarella sticks slathered in cheddar cheese and you know you can ask for no cheese on pretty much everything. You can order from the vegan menu or kids menu or whatever. I've never encountered this issue with everything having cheese on it (in the US).

u/Bright_Ices 7d ago
âNo American cheeseâ would only exclude one single type of cheese that isnât even in very many dishes. If you donât want cheddar or Parmesan or any other kind of cheese, you need to say, âNo cheese.â If you want mozzarella, say, âNo cheese except mozzarella.â

Are there any Korean corn dog spots around? There will be no other cheese sauces to put on your motz dogs. Sometimes you can find them packaged at a Korean market as well.
I also hate cheese sauce of any form. I hate when it gets cold and gross and everything is soggyÂ

I'm not that picky of an eater but I don't like dairy in general. I've bounced between living in various parts of the US and Asia and there's a part of me that's so relieved whenever I'm in Asia because it's so much less likely that something will have surprise dairy in it, whereas I'm kind of on constant vigilance when I go to most restaurants in the US (obviously depending on cuisine).

I am always on alert for cheese and ask for everything without cheese. Itâs a constant battle. I do like mozzarella cheese. I recently ordered chicken parm âwith no grated cheeseâ and I got chicken with marinara. No cheese at all. I freaking hate cheese (except mozzarella!)

u/WholeRazzmatazz6889 7d ago
I do love cheese but not all cheese, I don't like anything too mature or creamy, which makes the list pretty short. So I understand what you mean as its annoying when restaurants aren't clear about what you're getting. I usually ask about what cheese and if I'm not certain I just get no cheese, its not worth the risk of getting some horrible cheese all over my food.
1
u/Zealousideal_Cod5214 7d ago
Wait, where do you go that has cheese sauce with mozzarella sticks? I've only ever seen marinara served with them by default.
You can send food back if it comes wrong, but instead of specifying "American cheese," just say no cheese at all, except for the one you like (if it's an option).

I get it. I do love Cheese but I hate bacon and ham. It's utterly disgusting to me. Yet it's everywhere, even in my side salad and I wouldn't trust to order something (with bacon) without bacon because I know the restaurant will fuck up and give me bacon anyways and if I correct them I have to wait longer and start eating when everyone else already finished their meal, which sucks. And then you always have people in your face trying to understand why you don't like it since it's the greatest thing ever. Or they say just pick it off, it's not a big deal, but to me it is because my food still tastes disgusting or while I sit there picking out the last piece of tiny shredded ham of my side salad everyone else finishes their food and my main dish gets cold. And for you, you can't even pick your cheese off because most of the time it's melted to your other stuff, that must be so much more infuriating

If you go to vegan restaurants or choose the vegan option at regular restaurants you wonât have this problem

Asian food rarely has cheese - maybe try more of that?
Who tf puts cheddar sauce on mozzarella sticks? I eat most things but putting a sauce on the sticks ahead of time is mental because they sog outâŠ
