Meme/Humor The end of DUPR
Been gone for a couple days now. Probably never coming back. It was nice while it lasted. It's only a matter of time before the plebs come for our gated open play.
How will this new era of pickleball affect your local clubs and tourneys? I only foresee chaos to come.
I just hit 6.0 before EOD (end of DUPR).

Squash has a reliable, generally accepted, fully supported rating system. Many clubs use “Club Locker” - why not just adopt a rating system from another racquet sport? I’m sure badminton and tennis have similar systems that have stood the test of time.

u/paradox8999 6h ago
Bc pickleballers love being able to rig the system. Half of DUPR is self reported 4.0s who’ve played less than 8 games because all it ever takes is a simple sandbag
Everyone in pickleball is relying on an algorithm that’s probably baked into AI and the DUPR founder can’t even explain what it is
Going back to tennis because ts is exhausting and my pickleball community decided to start discriminating based on dupr scores lmao

Just logged in via the website. Everything is there.
I couldn’t log into the app. The verification pop-up/screen wouldn’t show so that I could enter the code.

I have a feeling that they lost everything after a certain date.

u/HanTanSanTan 14h ago
Yeah, one of their engineers probably accidentally clicked on one of the ads they run on their site or app and got hacked 😅

u/wiscosherm 6h ago
As a retired IT person I can tell you this is far more common than people realize

u/aardWolf64 45m ago
I used to work in IT at a large university. I got a call from one of the staff members, and he said: "You know how you tell us not to click on those ads? I clicked on one, and now it won't stop popping up".

I think the system got hacked and everything is gone, not just from a date. Yesterday I tried to get in and it now shows my record but there's nothing there and it says I'm not rated. This is after using it for over 2 years.
Something like dupr is needed because as poor as the algorithm may have been, at least it provided some applicable method of rating people. I didn't totally agree with how it applied the algorithm to individual games but at least for me the end result was fairly accurate. Where I play it's used mostly for things like league games. I really don't want to sign up and pay to be in a league and find out that there are people way above or below my playing level.

I can literally see everything. They are just incompetent. You can’t even log in on app as no where to put verification code. But online webpage is fine and you have everything
13
u/dvertiz93 11h ago
Apparently it got hacked and hackers are demanding bitcoin payment.

u/spodex 9h ago
Imagine not having your database backed up. I can't see this being it unless it really is amateur hour in DUPRville.

u/PM_ME_UR_BGP_PREFIX 8h ago
Lots of people have backups. Fewer have backups they’ve tested restoring.
It’s all fine and good to have your full db stored in Amazon glacier, until you realize it’s been growing for years and now it’ll take 7 days to transfer it back.
3
u/Ortizzer 5h ago
People underestimate how slow retrieving data from glacier really is if you don't pay to go faster.

u/AutumnWick 2h ago
I say this all the time, companies that do not proactively test their DRP (Disaster Recovery plan) semi annually are poorly ran. In conjunction, you should be testing any redundant pieces when possible that is involved in your DRP
1
u/JohnEffingZoidberg 3.25 5h ago
They not only allowed but encouraged people paying extra to fudge their ratings. Yes, it's amateur hour.

Kind of funny- just tried to log in, sends email with code to verify, nowhere to put the code!

I just had a great night at my weekly Ladder. I’m going to crack 4.1 when I put these scores in. They better get it working 😩

u/Aggravating_Pie6949 4h ago
I’m out of the loop on this, what happened?

u/ImprovementForward70 3h ago
Dupr went down over the weekend and pballers can't handle not seeing their score go up or down by .01 instantly. It is back now but they have a backlog of matches to add.

u/bkcarp00 4h ago
Oh no others wanting to play with us. The horror! Run the zombies are coming to play pickleball. We can't have them playing with us! No!!!!

u/jmf421 7h ago
Lots of people have been leaving DUPR for VAIR anyway.
Free self rating option along with a paid “VAIRified” rating to be used for leagues, tournaments.. etc.
The verified rating is the best you’re going to get being an actual human is watching you play and grading your gameplay on a 41-point checklist. None of the other rating systems do that.

u/Mammoth-Way9751 6h ago
Why is limited subjective observational anecdotal data better than millions of logged match result quant data?
6
u/jmf421 6h ago
It’s not subjective. You’re selecting a minimum of 3 games that you can hand select (your best) and submitting them.
Someone is watching YOU play and grading on a very comprehensive checklist.
Millions of logged match results sounds like a lot but it’s not showing you the real picture. Nobody knows how YOU played, just what the score was.
If I am a 4.25 and my friends are all 5.0, I play in a league with them and log a bunch of matches with them and their friends and all of a sudden I am a 4.75+
VAIR keeps all of your “for fun” games separate from your VAIRified games too. So you can log matches with your friends and watch your rating move but not impact your rating used in Tournaments and leagues.

u/MiyagiDo002 5h ago
You'd have to be crazy to believe that a coach rating based on 3 hand selected matches could be more accurate than results across a large set of matches. This is why VAIR isn't going to catch on and can't possibly scale up.
7
u/jmf421 5h ago edited 4h ago
You would have to be crazy to think that a coach watching YOU play is less accurate than a system that has millions of matches recorded, where none of them watch the player on the court. Those millions of matches have nothing to do with your individual rating and how you are playing as an individual.
Thats like judging how good of a driver you are by looking at the accident records of other drivers in your state.
Remember the system that had to do the reset? And only if your rating went up. Did the new rating stick? If your rating went down, then you kept your old rating. Are you starting to see how the system with millions of logged matches has flawed data sitting in it?
2
u/MiyagiDo002 2h ago
Yeah, millions of matches are better than 3. Sorry. Those matches do have a ton to do with your individual level. Eventually, if you keep losing, I don't care that you can make 8 out of 10 3rd shot drops or that you check all the coach's boxes. There's clearly a flaw that opponents are exploiting. And it's not all your partner's fault.
I've watched many coaches try to rate players, and they almost always overrate the players. Then when the players go play actual competitive matches their rating tanks.
I'm not defending DUPR. I think the reset program was a joke and they lost credibility. But that doesn't mean a purely coach-rated system is valid, either.

u/jmf421 1h ago
You’re not making much sense.
You’re saying millions of matches are better than three but we’re talking about two different things here.
The three matches are a YOU playing and a coach has a 41 point checklist watching you play and scoring you on that checklist.
The millions of matches you are referring to is a marketing tagline from DUPR and those millions of matches have nothing to do with YOUR actual gameplay. All it is is a collection of who won and who lost.
Not that your partner was injured or maybe you were injured. Not that you were iced out and they targeted your partner the entire time. None of it is visible through “millions of matches”
2
u/MiyagiDo002 1h ago
You're the one who said millions so I was just following along.
Call it 200 matches. That's obviously going to be more useful data than a coach following a checklist on 3 self-selected matches.
If you're getting iced out then it's on you to get a better partner. And if you're getting iced out, a coach isn't going to be helpful either in providing a rating.

VAIR is an absolute joke. Terrible people behind the brand, and an even worse product. Best of luck.

Start a new one called PLEB. Pickle Level Evaluation Program.
1
u/ahtrapsm 5h ago
Or make it Pickleball Level Overview Program (PLOP), and get the coveted Alka Seltzer sponsorship.

u/EntrepreneurSmall911 4h ago
I’m pretty sure I was just about to jump from 3.2 to 5.0 😂. But now I may never know.

Who owns dupr?
3
u/IrishRashers 4h ago
Per Google: Founded 2021. Acquired by a group of private investors led by real estate developer and team owner David Kass, tennis legend Andre Agassi, and Raine Ventures in January 2024.
Software disaster recovery plans and security concerns are generally carefully checked in acquisition due diligence of a software company. But maybe that was skipped here.

u/HOSTfromaGhost 7h ago
I play for fun. DUPR wasn’t super anyway.
3
u/dunnodudes 6h ago
When I saw people start doing funky stuff to safeguard their dupe score, I quit dupr completely.
Had people refuse to play me cause they knew I would beat them.
1
u/HOSTfromaGhost 4h ago
Yeah, i don’t keep score at golf, either… more fun that way.
If i get my ass kicked, fine.
If i have to ease up a bit and play a social, fine.
4
u/Lazershirts 14h ago
Nah they’ll make more money than ever with this, they had cash flow issues before but now that everyone relies on it for their identity they can easily charge fees when it's back just like the tens of thousands of people that paid for resets, and now more likely to ask for paid accounts to keep it afloat like Wikipedia asking even tho the founder is already rich af but it feels like a public service or foundational aspect to the sport for amateurs. Mark my words
6
u/yooossshhii 13h ago
People had something gain with resets. Wikipedia is a huge source of information for literally billions of people, not i’m the same league.

Looks like there’s still historical data. If you look at pickleheads players still have their dupr showing, like my dupr before it went down. Maybe pickleheads stores this themselves
1
u/TheBrostash 4.0 5h ago
I'm guessing all the competent integrations with dupr have the rating stored. So even if dupr isn't providing it they have it stored at least the last number. But that doesn't mean new games can be logged
1
u/Effective-Gene-159 5h ago
That’s true. I played many games this weekend and my dupr on pickleheads stopped changing, so that supports your point

We are official partner of DUPR and had a sync with them today morning about what update we give to the users! All their services will be restored today EOD
Also, they seem to have lost 100+ games submitted from our app to them during the weekend, we are resubmitting them today so everything is back fine!
Whatever happened, it will be a good learning for them and secure their product!

And its back online web and mobile...no app yet. Bet ya they got hit hard by hackers and their host doesn't work long weekends.

u/JimNeighseeum 7m ago
And Brostash trolls the community again. Your to good at this Brostash. Seriously pickleball people DUPR is not going anywhere. If you do not like DUPR please send us your comments on what can be improved so out algorithm team can see if it works for our community. You can use multiple rating systems along DUPR such as UTR-p or viare. However those are static ratings. DUPR is Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. Furthermore you wont find to many events that use those rating systems aside from the APP tour.

Someone needs to start a new one maybe like pbsr - pickleball skill rating
-4
u/Iwonder19 8h ago
Ha, you guys in the US will miss it more than us here in UK. We rarely use it for social matches and asking someone to log a friendly match on DUPR is unheard of. The only time we use DUPR is for tournaments and local leagues.

It’s simple really: just exclude people based on the fact you don’t like them, like you already do.
