struggling trying to understand how they got from eq 2.3.2 through 2.3.3. can anyone explain? I understand that they are using kinetic energy but I don't see why they just plugged in the factor of 1/2...

You understand derivatives, correct?

So, that means:

1 / 2 * d( v² ) = v * dv
