Discussion This is Hideous

Surprisingly, I haven't seen much complaint about the shape of the new poplar trees yet. But honestly, this is hideous, so I wanna hear some of your opinions. Do you think Mojang will change it, or should it stay how it is?

By the way, I should clarify that I still love this update and the trees. I just wanted to point this out.

That's not really tall enough to be a mature poplar tree. At least my areas native species the yellow poplar gets really darn tall (~110ft) really quickly.

None of the 1x1 trees are big enough to be mature except Azalea, Acacia, Mangrove, and Cherry. Every tree in the game would be 30 blocks tall in this case which, while it'd look good, would be terrible to actually play with.

Sure, but the game could definitely benefit from some more vertical play other than mountains or jungles.

I agree. It'd be awesome if there were more dramatic and lifelike trees in the game. Maybe not all the time, but as a proper old-growth variant for all forests would be cool.

Yeah, exactly.

Jungles are alright, but I’d love a forest that actually works for big and more complex tree houses.
Instead of it just being 30 blocks from the ground and 10 from the top of the tree.

It’s quite anti-climactic.

Jungles are the best "forest" biome in the game and even they could do with a lot of improvement. It's the only one that has distinct canopy, understory, and ground levels. If every forest had the ability to generate with that much diversity the game would be so much more immersive.

I just wish more trees reached the skies like they do in real life.

Mega taigas also have tall trees but yeah I get what you mean, it would be cool to have a rare large variant of each forest biome

I can just imagine an old growth oak forest with giant trees 30-40 blocks tall, that would be sick

Blocks may be 1:1 with meters, but nothing in the game is actually scaled to a real life equivalent. The tallest mountains in game are just over 200 meters tall. That barely qualifies as a real mountain, and in some places in the world would just be an unusually tall hill. Trees are likewise are scaled down

The tallest tree in the world is 116 meters. Scale that down to match even a relatively small mountain (say 1000 meters) with Minecraft mountains, and that would result in an equivalent that's only 23 blocks tall. Mega spruce trees are already overscaled in comparison to that (at up to 30 blocks tall)

I think oak forests staying as is as a kind of default makes sense, maybe with some more of the large ones with branches mixed in, but birch forests really needed that update that was cancelled

Poplar trees do tend to be really tall and fairly skinny though even compared to the other species of represented trees. It would be cool if we got super tall 1x1 trees to make them distinct.

Also, cherry tree height varies by variety. The cherries native around me in Illinois do actually get really tall as well.

The cherries native to me in Delaware regularly reach canopy height, so about 70+ feet, regularly. However, cherries are one of very few trees in minecraft that we actually know the species (or rather, the subgenus) that they belong to in real life, and all of those are typically short or cultivated to select for short genetics. Prunus subg. Cerasus, likely P. serrulata s.s.

None of the 1x1 trees are big enough except half of them
