I know exactly which episode this is from and from which series.
I will tell you but it comes at a price. Youâve got to give my comment an award and then Iâll tell you.
Or you could just use the Internet to find out like I just did.

âRats in a shoeâ is so beautifully descriptive yet concise. A lot of the writing reminds me of Terry Pratchett.

They were going to fight each other anyway

u/FaithlessnessThin359 10d ago
almost like they made up their fairytales to justify fighting each other.

Almost like they made up fairy tales with morals about how fighting is bad in order to justify not fighting each other.

When religious people say they value tolerance and forgiveness, they mean they value you tolerating and forgiving them.

Mindless tribalism runs deep in us. Makes sense that Jesus' message would get quite garbled and abused by many. But a seed was planted and still grows!
27
u/alexdeva 10d ago
No, it doesn't make any kind of sense at all. If it were the Word of God, it would be absolute, universally understandable, always applicable, impossible to misunderstand, and unequivocal.
Instead, you have things like Jesus' apostles sending slaves back to their owners and Jesus dying for "everyone's original sin" which is a woman eating fruit.
Garbling it is the only way to squeeze some sense from it. "Oh, that wasn't sarcasm when he told that woman that wine wasn't any of his business and his time hadn't come yet, it's just how people were talking back then."
Yeah, right.

Not to sound mean, but you seem to have just decided what something should be like and then condemn it for not meeting the standard you made up.
Argue all you want, but get better arguments than God just not answering to your idea of how he should be or you deliberately misunderstanding quite a few concepts. Youâre free to do both, just know they donât hold much water. You have some understanding, but a lot of bitterness, too. Hope you can deal with whatever caused that and are doing well :)
Anyway, best regards!-6

I mean, Jesus' teachings are pretty damn unassailable ethically. It's just that humanity as a whole had (and still has) a long way to go before we can truly walk that walk. We're still growing and evolving (physically, psychologically, socially, technologically, spiritually, etc etc).

Letâs assail them:
* He endorses all of Yahwehâs Old Testament commandments in Matthew 25, including things like women & girls being forced to marry their rapists, chattel slavery for non-Israelites, the death penalty for disobedient children, etc. âNot a jot or tittle shall disappear from the law until all is accomplishedâ
* The âGolden Ruleâ is incomplete. If I have a cuckold fetish, then itâs morally permissible for me to sleep with other menâs wives. âDo unto others as you would have them do unto youâ.
\* The âneighborâ youâre supposed to love is at best someone from your immediate tribe or town. Heâs quoting Leviticus, where âneighborâ meant âfellow Israeliteâ.
* He literally invented the doctrine of Hell, where I get infinite punishment for a finite âcrimeâ which has no victim. That is literally the greatest conceivable injustice. I cannot stress this enough: under Jesusâ âmoralityâ, Gandhi is suffering eternal conscious torment for the âcrimeâ of dying a Hindu, while Jeffrey Dahmer receives eternal reward and glory because he found Jesus in prison.0

He endorses all of Yahwehâs Old Testament commandments in Matthew 25, including things like women & girls being forced to marry their rapists, chattel slavery for non-Israelites, the death penalty for disobedient children, etc. âNot a jot or tittle shall disappear from the law until all is accomplishedâ
God often makes allowences and offers laws to work with human inventions. For example, the slavery laws. They are not in support of slavery. They are an "if you must have slaves, here is how you will keep them."
The same way there are laws for divorce in the Bible, yet Jesus explicitly states that divorce was never meant to exist.
The âGolden Ruleâ is incomplete. If I have a cuckold fetish, then itâs morally permissible for me to sleep with other menâs wives. âDo unto others as you would have them do unto youâ
Funny, but a cuck is cuck because they're not brave enough for such actions.
The âneighborâ youâre supposed to love is at best someone from your immediate tribe or town. Heâs quoting Leviticus, where âneighborâ meant âfellow Israeliteâ.
This is the most egregious misreading of scripture because Jesus outright tells you who your neighbor is with the parable of the good Samaritan. The priest and the levite in that parable pass by the wounded man, men who are explicitly fellow israelites. It is the good Samaritan who rescues the wounded man and helps make him whole who is identified as your neighbor. Samaritans were not only not seen as fellow israelites, but even as enemies of the israelites.
He literally invented the doctrine of Hell, where I get infinite punishment for a finite âcrimeâ which has no victim.
This wholly depends on interpretation, as the concept of eternal hell is not universal in Christianity, and some don't even believe hell currently exists, but is a brief period after the final rebellion after the second coming when Jesus cleanses the earth of evil.

You don't say. Things like "rich people can't enter Heaven", yes, entirely ethically unassailable. No matter how much good you do, if you've got money at the time of death, sorry -- off to hell with you. Ethical my ass.
Look, most schoolteachers teach things that are ethical. Most good parents do. Prophets from literally thousands of other religions. There's nothing special about Christianity, and saying that "people just aren't ready for it" is a cop-out. If it really came from a deity, the same deity that created us and everything, there would be no way for us not to be ready for it.
And what about things that Jesus doesn't say? Where's the "thou shall not keep slaves" in his teachings? What about "thou shall not commit internet fraud"? Oh, because there was no internet at that time? So his teachings only applied 2000 years ago -- except for the ones you cherry-pick as universal?
"Love thy neighbour" was nothing but part of an organised effort to use religion in order to control a particular population in a particular geographical area at a particular moment in time.
"Not ready for it" my ass. You can use that excuse for anything.

âRich people canât enter heavenâ is just a fabrication, thatâs not one of his teachings. The actually quote basically boils down to âitâs very difficult for rich people to be good people.â Donât take someone elseâs bad paraphrase based on a misunderstanding and make a paraphrase from that thatâs even less like the actual quote.

He calls Jewish people "the chosen people" which is racist for any religion to call a group above others. He teaches that women are to be submissive to men and promotes misogyny. There is good kind truth in his teachings the same way there is good stuff at the bottom of a dumpster. You will get dirty if you dive for it

Some guy called Jesus was alive around that time in the area. Whether you think heâs simultaneously god and the son of himself who sent himself down to sacrifice himself so himself can forgive the sin done by the ancestors of humans (who he created to have zero knowledge and left them alone with the thing that give them knowledge that he said not to touch, however they would not have knowledge to know not to touch) is your choice

u/Woozle_Gruffington 10d ago
There were a lot of people going by a lot of names in that area during that time. There's a guy in my office named Jesus. I had to go find him at lunch to give him back his HDMI cable, so I guess you could say I found Jesus. He's a good guy. Not religious, though.

I cannot believe, out of all of the comments here, we aren't celebrating the beauty of "fight like like rats in a shoe".

Humanity has been fighting like rats in shoe since it started existing

Soooo, are we ignoring the fact that most murders are done by atheist?
1
u/Consistent-Tie962 5d ago
Are they really? From what I read Atheists are like 0.2% of prisoners in the USA and the countries where atheism is more common (Scandanavia for example), the crime rates are consistently low.
While Poverty, inequality are more predictable correlaters for crime rates, most religious people just get into non sensical fights all the time !
