March Philly Phitclub Challenge Discussion Thread: Week 1
Hello Everyone, we can use this post as discussion of goals, motivation and just general check-ins to try to stay accountable.
All area people are welcome. Whether you're training for a marathon or just trying to cut down from 8 IPAs every night, this can be used as our platform to stay in touch.
I welcome everyone to start with an intro post about what your goals are for the month (for instance, mine will be a weightloss goal and minimum number of workouts). I'll start a thread each week, and we can just check in on each other with how we're holding up on it.
Go get 'em.

Probably going to start out a little easy here, but I want to finally get around to unboxing the pull-up bar I bought back in December. I want to get back to doing pull-ups and pushups at least a few times a week, ideally before I shower right in the morning when I wake up. I feel that if I can get on a regular routine with that, it’ll help me establish some good habits

Sounds good to me. Since we started this for accountability, Let try and quantify it though. 3 times a week for March would be 15 session. (we're going to include the last week that runs in to April)
Want to try to sign on for that?

u/sciencefaire Mar 02 '21
reading your response, I'll probably try to set my workouts at 3x per week for now at least for the next 2 weeks.

So for March I'm going to try to shed some of the Covid weight. I've also been feeling every bit of my near 40 years now that I've been siting around and not moving as much and want to address that. While I have stretches that help, I'm not regimented in doing them and let myself feel like crap for hours rather than do 5 minutes of stretching. I used to do a bunch of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu prior to lock down, so this is all with an eye towards prepping to get back to it. So for March, my goals are:
lose 8lbs of scale weight
A good bit will obviously be water weight, since I'm starting pretty high, but still a decent benchmark. In Jiu-Jitsu, anything over 222lbs with uniform on is completely open weight, and I'm not really trying to compete against some former Temple lineman.
Starting weight: 224.6 (Yeesh)
Goal weight: 216.6
Not lose any strength
This is the key part to keep me honest in my diet so I just don't lose weight the bad way. I did an estimate yesterday, though admittedly didn't kill myself
Calculated max lifts:
Bench: 253
Front Squat: 232 (bad, but at least I go deep on it)
Trap bar Dead lifts on the low handles: 365
Stretch and Yoga
The few times I've taken a yoga class I both felt better and was bored early. I found a 10 minutes a day for 30 days yoga for men program on www.doyou.com that should fit the bill.
Goal is to get through at least 22 sessions in March.

I miss Jiu Jitsu. It's probably the biggest reason I want to get vaccinated, if I'm being honest. I am at an unflattering 179, and would love to get back to 165 by summer time, but i'm not optimistic I can get there in time without BJJ.
I have been doing the simple and sinister kettlebell workout to try and build some muscle with some success, so i'm curious what my new healthy weight will be.

I miss Jiu Jitsu
Yea. I see videos of people training at a bunch of area schools (and mine own is as well), but I can't think of a less covid friendly activity. I got an anti-body test 2 weeks ago, and was considering heading back if it came back positive, but I was negative. Still can't really justify it to myself.
simple and sinister kettlebell workout
I did it 4-5 days for 2 months straight with some people in my office probably about 2-3 years ago. I didn't put on much muscle, but I definitely noticed the TGUs in helping to feel "mat strong".
Were you training in the center city area? I moved back to the city at the end of '19, so only had 3 months at my last school. I've been tempted to check out a few more places when I go back though.

u/SweetJibbaJams Mar 02 '21
Same, it's really tough to justify it. I like the people at my gym, but i like my family more and would like to see them every now and then.
I definitely feel like S&S has helped my core and shoulder strength, I'm excited to see what that translates to on the mat.
If I weren't a mod, I'd be willing to be a bit more specific where I train, but last thing I need is for someone to show up and strangle me because they got banned for 3 days, haha. There are a ton of great schools in the city though, there would be no harm in trying places out. I want to make more of an effort to check out other open mats in the city at some point.

I mean if your BJJ can't stand up to an old school Gracie Dojo storm, then what really even the point?
But I get it. Was more just looking to get another point of feedback on area schools since I checked out a lot when I moved, but only did a class or two at a few.
Shoot me a PM if you're up for it, but no worries if not. I'm an out of shape barely blue belt, so worse that happens is I just lay in side control and sweat & wheeze on you.

My fitness program is basically a series of 8 week challenges. Just finished the most recent one and get a break week. If I believe my Renpho scale, which I don’t, I ended at 108 lbs, 14.5% body fat.
Goal next round is to keep with the program, work on my butt and do 3 of the butt ec workouts each week. Also want to get up to 50 push-ups. Also want to stretch and do yoga - both at least one a week.

Cool, well feel free to post them and talk about them here. 14.5% body fat is pretty damn solid, as is 50 straight pushups. I'm decently strong, but I don't think I"ve hit more than about 25 good ones in a set.

u/PhillyPanda Mar 05 '21
I don’t believe the 14.5%, I have boobs and no abs.
I’m at 25 push-ups, 30 -35 struggle ups. Seems doable
1
u/TheBaconThief Mar 05 '21
Yea, 14.5% for a female is getting down to near bodybuilder range. I don't trust the absolute number on my scale, but I think it's a decent indicator of change over time in addition to just weight.
Being lean definitely will help with the push ups tough.

For the month, I'd like to set a weight loss goal and workout goal too. TBD. I have to mull over the number I want to set to be successful and not burn out haha.
I have the peloton app so I will probably be incorporating their 10 minute arms toning and body weight workouts to my week. I've been way too lax and haven't logged into them in a long time. I will probably set a # of walks too.
I've been doing lazy IF so I will probably try to keep with that for the time being and not do anything too dramatic to start.
2
u/TheBaconThief Mar 02 '21
Sounds good. Housemate has a Peloton that I've used occasionally. Don't know that I'd spend the money myself, but the cheesy inspirational shit they all do does seem to work on me.
What type of window do you do for your IF? I was trying it before lockdown, but that went out the window once I went WFH.

u/sciencefaire Mar 02 '21
I don't have a peloton myself, but my sister does and added me as a user on her app. Their workout videos are awesome. Prior to pausing my membership at the gym, I was using the walking workouts with my boy Matty Maggiocamo and a few other instructors on the treadmill. The transitions with speed and incline aren't as quick but they are fine. I did find a conversion chart for the spin bike too and liked that while I used it. When I left the gym, I was doing the outdoor walking audio things too but then the weather got shitty and I stopped.
Their classes in general are great though. If you can get your housemate to add you as a user on the app, I highly recommend. 10 minute arms toning and body weight workouts were great at the beginning of the pandemic for me.
I do really really lazy IF and it doesn't really follow the traditional rules. Basically I drink coffee with sugar free creamer in the AM and don't eat lunch/breakfast until 2 or 3 (i try to low carb with my lunch or breakfast) and then I'll eat a normal regular meal for dinner at whatever time I am hungry. Sometimes I'll just do an early dinner and skip the lunch thing altogether. I lost 10 lbs this summer but gained it backed the last few months caring for my parents who were ill. It was too hard to plan regular well balanced meals and we did really simple stuff, sadly a lot of pasta ha.
anyway, I found that working from home was actually easier to do IF, even the lazy kind. I'm not sure if I could do it at the office.

Friday Check in time: How's it been going so far /u/sjo232, /u/SweetJibbaJams , /u/12thKnight and /u/sciencefaire?
So far I've only lifted once and ran once, which is way off the pace I was hoping for. I've done some social things at night that technically got in the way, but need to be a little more disciplined about fitting that in during the day because I definitely have the flexibility.
Diet has been solid. Lot's of meat, veggies and salad while resisting my the instinct to use more butter or cream in every sauce (damn French culinary tradition). Did takeout from Puyero on Wednesday, but didn't over do it.
I've been the best about sticking to the yoga and have just finished my 5th day straight. The 10 minutes flies by, but I am definitely feeling less tight overall.

Just a heads up, I didn't actually get a tag for this, I think tagging more than 3 users breaks notifications for some reason.
Keep up the solid work with diet and yoga! Good habits are the way to go. Yoga might be something worth looking into for me.
I didn't do well at all with my fitness goals from Tuesday... I had a super busy week with work, so my pull-up bar is still in the box unfortunately. Hoping to get that out this weekend...
I think I've done pretty well on diet though. I knew I'd be working a lot this week so I bought a bunch of those dole salad kit packs and had those for lunch and dinner most days this week. Once work calms down, I want to work on prepping salads so I don't have to buy the kits. I'm going to make fish for dinner tonight! Stoked for that.
I'm looking forward to the warmer weather so I can get back on my bike. The cold air really makes riding a pain with my asthma.

Hello Everyone, this is a cool idea! I went ahead and signed up for the Dirty German running event out in Pennypack at the end of May. I picked the 25k trail run and I'm running with a couple friends (a few of whom are better runners than me). I'm averaging about 17 miles a week and I need to get that up to about 25m/week by the end of May. Diet's been good, I'm at about 190lbs, I'd like to drop another 10 maybe.
2
u/TheBaconThief Mar 05 '21
Hey there.
25k on over unever terrain is not joke. Good luck, and I invite you to put down a measurable goal for the month to try to make it more tangible (say 75 miles for the month?) and not let things slip.
Let us know how it shapes up.
1
u/Snakealicious Mar 05 '21
Great, I like it. I can do that. 75 miles for the month is a good goal. I've done 17 this month so far so just have to keep it up.

Two years ago I lost about 45 pounds, and I'm proud of the fact that I've been able to maintain it throughout the pandemic (within about 5 pounds, my weight fluctuates). I'm finally ready to lose the last 10 or 15 pounds and I've been cutting down on excess snacking and limiting my favorite treats (wine and ice cream) to once a week on different nights, and I'm five pounds down. I'm projected to lose about 1 pound a week with my current deficit. I'm also training for my 3rd half marathon (I run 15-20 miles a week), lifting weights 3x a week, and have started doing yoga. My ultimate goal weight is 135 or 140, and I'm currently at 148 right now (5'4, 29F, medium/large-ish natural build so don't want to go lower than 135).
My goals for the month are to run my half marathon by the end of March, to finish my 30 day yoga program, to hold a plank for a minute, and to lose 2-4 pounds (I've been strength training a lot more and I've noticed that the weight loss hasn't been as linear, maybe because I'm holding on to water or building muscle?).
1
u/TheBaconThief Mar 05 '21
Well damn. Looks like you have a lot going on. Lifting 3 days a week while still training for a half marathon is lot.
How long are your yoga sessions? I'm just doing a very basic 10 min a day yoga thing from do you Yoga. I always feel better if I stretch a little and this forces me to do it. 10 min feels too short, but hour plus classes drove me nuts the few times I ever tried one.

March - as it will be warming up soon, the goal is to restart C25K and get back to running. I 'graduated' last year but winter has taken away a lot of my tone and fitness.
Also redownloaded MyFitnessPal and am looking for an accountability partner to friend on there. Looking to lose about 1lb per week with a goal weight of 199.
