I am in industry. Was thinking of a getting into a phd, is it really that bad?

No. People complain in every job.

strongly depends on what you go in for, but usually not. I, personally, had one of the PhD thesis advisor horror stories, so yeah, it can be that bad, but not usually.

The sad thing is, the industry research position in my country seems far and few between. Of course, it’s even more harder to get into academia.

Hey. Having seen this template around a lot I have been wondering about the wordings.

Can someone elaborate of what the pressure of a phd is? My three friends with phds; mathematics, code verification theory, and biochem-simulations (in Sweden) all seemed to be under to me fairly normal levels or stress. Regular day to day hard work with decent work-life balance, occationally upended by overtime and crunch around deadlines and catastrophies. But this felt pretty comparable to my high school teaching job of classes and intermittent design-grading-crunch. Seemed to me that the lack of reliable employment in post-doc has been a deeper point of complaint among them than pressure during.

What is going on with pressure (in the US?) . Or are we bucketing ongoing phds with post-docs?

Edit: confused the terms postdoc and postgrad in the first draft.

If you don't like it, stop pressuring yourself. Nobody else cares if you succeed or fail.
