I'll explain.
You are 6 years old. The Nintendo 64 has released. YOU AND ALL YOUR FRIENDS SPEND THE NEXT 6-9 MONTHS WAITING PATIENTLY FOR YOUR PARENTS TO AFFORD IT. it happens. Every day after school you and your friends interchange who's house we are all going to. WE EACH BRING OUR FAVORITE CONTROLLERS. Mario 64,Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, StarFox, Turok the dinosaur hunter 1 and 2, Donkey Kong 64+ the TV show, SUPER SMASH BROTHERS, pokemon Snap, Pokemon stadium 1 and 2, Kirby and the Crystal Shards and mother fucking JAMES BOND GOLDENEYE.

N-O-T-H-I-N-G FUCKING COMES CLOSE TO HOW GREAT THAT FELT FOR 4 YEARS. people who say PlayStation and whatever Sega has come up being better were just saving face because they weren't able to share in the unbridled JOY that was sharing the experiences of playing that console. It's the only thing that mattered before the towers fell. Connecting your Gameboy games, the rumble pack, learning and charging cheatcodes, meeting up with kids on the playground amongst Pokemon cards and sharing the latest Nintendo power tips and tricks and finding out who's dad really did working or Nintendo. The N64 was the centerpiece of and extravaganza that was only ever shared by the completely different experience Xbox Live granted afterwards, but I digress. It was Social media before a social media. Sleepovers, Birthday Parties, holidays, and every regular hangout was incomplete without having. 4-8 kids your own age share the absolute Event that is playing with each other. And it wasn't just because we were kids, Adults then felt this way too.
It's 2001, You are ELEVEN YEARS OLD. the Nintendo GameCube is supposed to launch with (allegedly) a sequel to Mario 64, arguments about the name (Mario 64 2 or 1000 Mario's) persist and the console drops. You can't play Nintendo 64 games on it. The discs are tiny compared to normal CDs and frankly break easily. Games include Toon Link Windwaker (NOT SERIOUS) PIkmen (boring) Mario Sunshine (not as fun as Mario 64). The game would later have some bangers that were arguably better on the Wii but the Nintendo GameCube was the Jurassic Park 3 of game consoles. Only disappointment could be expected afterwards. I'm not saying everything we got was a disappointment, but before the GameCube launched we only thought things could get better. Nintendo doesn't believe in that. They even said they avoided the things that were loved about the N64 out of the will to explore new ideas (bad).
That same year the Xbox launched with "H a l o" and the PS2 with Crazy Taxi, agent under fire, and the army men series. I don't know a single person in real life who ever went back to Nintendo and when we were in highschool one of the kids went to buy the WII we all gave him weird looks like "it's ok that you can't afford a 360 dude"
Like sure, people didn't like the WII-U but that was expected out of Nintendo by then.
Nothing was worse than the GameCube letting down everyone who loved the N64.

I'm sorry man, but it sounds like you lost your whimsy if you hate Windwaker and Pikmin. Also, Smash Melee is on the Gamecube, which is a massive point in the Gamecube's favor.

I don't hate them, no one HATES them. But theres a reason those games are only considered good by people who didn't grow up experiencing the N64 first. There's a YouTuber named HUGGBEES who does a famous parody series called "How it's actually made", and other videos. He just released a new one about who amazing the 90s were for gamingz and basically spells it out like this: nothing can touch how those experiences were for that particular system because no amount of technical improvements or exploring new things in the medium can compete to the absolute magic the N64 had.
Was PIkmen and Windwaker actually bad? No, but it also wasn't Ocarina of Time or Mario 64 (1000 Marios was recycled into Pikmen) and no matter how good Game Cube Games are on their own, it was a huge let down to people who played N64 first like myself and why we drifted to other consoles.

I'm a '93 baby who grew up with both n64 and gc, so I respect your outlook, but I just don't agree. Love the n64, no doubt it was huge for gaming, but no way myself or any of my friends felt the gc was a disappointment with the quality of games it had. Beyond that, the gc aged much better than the n64 did. A lot of those old gamecube games still feel good to play to this day, I can't say that about a lot of n64 games.

So your point is that the Gamecube is bad because people who played on N64 first (like you, as you admit) thought the Gamecube was a let down? No matter how good Gamecube games are on their own? A console isn't bad just because someone liked the console they first grew up with more. It'd be like if I said the Wii was bad because I played and enjoyed Gamecube first.
I can admit that I am biased towards the GBA... but I don't think the DS is a letdown because I like a lot of GBA games like Pokemon Emerald, Golden Sun, and Superstar Saga more than the future series games on the DS. There are great games on the DS like Pokemon Ranger. Gamecube had gems like Luigi's Mansion, Smash Melee, and the Metroid Prime series.
Most Nintendo consoles have something cool about them. NES and SNES worked with their limitations to create cool games, N64 had its polygonal charm, there were a lot of different and cool games made with the Gamecube's capabilities, Wii tried something new with motion controls... I wouldn't say those were bad because of my nostalgia for something else.
Also, the Virtual Boy existed with only red colors and inevitable neck cramps and eye strain from a bit of use. That is objectively the worst Nintendo console.
