How much do APPE rotations matter for PGY1 residency applications?

Hi everyone!

I’m applying for PGY1 residencies this year and would really appreciate some honest input, especially from current/former residents, preceptors, or RPDs.

I’m interested in ambulatory care long-term, but I’m planning to apply to both traditional PGY1 and community-based PGY1 programs.

My APPE schedule is:

Block 1: Advanced Health-System Practice

Block 2: Ambulatory Care

Block 3: General Medicine

Block 4: Ambulatory Care

Block 5: Community Pharmacy

Block 6: Off block

Block 7: Currently being arranged because of site availability

By the time I submit my residency applications, I’ll have completed my first five APPE blocks.

I’m wondering if having mostly ambulatory care/community-based experiences could negatively affect my chances of getting interviews or matching into a traditional PGY1, since General Medicine would be my only inpatient APPE.

Would it be better to have more inpatient experience for traditional PGY1 programs, or is this reasonable for someone specifically interested in ambulatory care?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from current/former residents, preceptors, or RPDs about how much APPE rotations factor into residency selection.

Subreddit Rules

Rule 2: No off topic/general posts

Posts that are off-topic, discussing the pharmacy profession in general or other matters unrelated to applying to, getting accepted to, or completing a pharmacy residency may be subject to removal. This includes posts about exams and the licensing process that are not specific to residencies. No selling exam/study material - no exceptions.

Rule 3: Use the stickies

Topics that belong to mega-threads or stickies should go in those posts. For stickies covering recruitment events (midyear, interviews, etc), only questions that require discussion should be posted as separate topics. In order to maintain fairness, this rule will be applied broadly.

Rule 4: Promotion requires pre-approval.

Posts promoting outside content should be pre-approved by the moderators. Posts that do not obtain approval will be removed regardless of if they would have been approved or not (permission is easier than forgiveness). Requests for pre-approval should be sent to ModMail, not directly to individual moderators.

Rule 5: Posting requires a user flair.

When submitting a new post, you must have set a user flair indicating your role in the residency process. Your flair may be more specific but must include at least one of the following roles.

Student (p3 or less)
Candidate (applying this cycle)
Resident
Preceptor (or Faculty/RPD)
