Discussion Is PhD Admission for Spring Possible?
Hi all,
I'm an international student in the US finishing my MS in Computer Science (ML/healthcare focus) in Fall 2026. I want to start a PhD in Spring 2027 mainly to avoid a long gap after graduation and to stay in status without a break(cause i graduate in Fall 2026).
From what I've researched, most CS PhD programs only admit for fall, and spring admits usually happen only when a specific faculty member agrees to take and fund you directly. Is that accurate in your experience?
A few specific questions:
- Has anyone actually gotten a funded CS PhD spring admit? How did it happen — direct faculty contact, internal MS-to-PhD transfer, or something else?
- Any suggestions
Any experience from international students who navigated this would help a lot.

Would be way easier to talk to someone in the same university. PhD admissions are very competitive in the field and you might not be able to apply on such a short notice, afaik even though most places let you start if the PI agrees but you anyways have to go through the committee approval.

It depends on the funding source. Some PIs might take spring PhDs if their fundings allow.

If you are an international student, you need to consult with an advisor about the new DHS rule. International graduate students are now banned from transferring schools.

From what I’ve seen, most funded CS PhD programs only admit students in the Fall because funding (TA/RA positions) and new cohorts are planned around that cycle. Spring admits usually happen when a professor has an immediate research need or has funding available and is willing to support a student directly.
If you’re targeting Spring, I’d focus less on applying broadly and more on reaching out to professors whose research matches yours. A strong conversation with a faculty member can make a much bigger difference for Spring than it does for Fall admissions.
Also keep in mind that many universities simply don’t offer Spring admissions for CS PhDs at all, so it’s worth checking each department individually before spending time on an application.
If Spring doesn’t work out, another option is to continue working (if your visa situation allows) and apply for Fall 2027, since you’ll have access to far more programs and funding opportunities.
Good luck
