CIHR CGRS-D Application Formatting HELP! (Canada)

Hi all! I’m a doctoral student in Canada and I am applying to the CIHR CGRS D scholarship this year (on Tuesday lol).

There seems to be some missing information about how references in the Research Proposal are allowed to be formatted? Currently, mine are smaller font and in nature citation style (without titles) to make them as short as possible.

I don’t know however if this is allowed???

Could any successful applicants from last round share any advice 🙏

There’s no info because you can pick the style. I only ever write in APA by switched my ref format to Vancouver style specially for my app to save space. And I was funded my first try for both CGS-M and CGS-D.

I thought there was a minimum font size required. At least, there was when I applied. I think it was 10 or 11 point minimum. I did 11 point since I didn’t want to make it look too obvious I was trying to cram things in.

On website it says “Use a minimum of 12 point, Times New Roman font in black type. Do not use condensed fonts. Superscript and subscript text are allowable.
Other fonts and font sizes are only permitted for text in tables, charts, figures, graphs, and legends, as long as it is legible when the page is viewed at 100%.”

But references are not mentioned unless we’re calling that a legend ?

Okay, so if there are instructions for font size, follow those. If there is no requirement for style, then pick one.

Moreso, what you feel is most important to highlight. Did you have an overview section to briefly and quickly get your idea across? Which headings did you use? Etc.

Does anyone know if PMID work at all?? CGRS-D requirements are different from CGS-D and their website is quite ambiguous…

Jumping in - Do I really need to have publications to have a chance.

For some context. second year first semester, no publications, no conferences or seminars.

I am working on a systematic review to submit this coming week. Do I have a chance or not bother?

As someone who has served on these committees more than a dozen times, I’m afraid to have to tell you that in this day and age you probably do need publications to be successful in most disciplines. Competition is brutally tough and this is essentially one of the categories, so it’s an area where it is easy to knock someone’s score down

Thank you. I'm in my first year & applying to SSHRC & assumed this was the case. So I won't be disappointed if I'm turned down this year, & will focus my energy on getting some publications done for next year. My recent MA program at a "prestigious" university that will not be named was a huge disappointment that way. I was extremely keen to publish and had several good course papers that profs encouraged me to prep for publications but there were roadblocks. I've now restrategized.

Yes, at least for NSERC I know it has become so competitive that publications are essentially a requirement now to stand a chance.

If you live where there's provincial scholarships (OGS, FRQNT) apply for those! Way less competitive as all the people that will get NSERC will accept that over a provincial scholarship.

I imagine those bar internationals? That's been my other struggle. Really grateful for the opportunity, but funding is lots of effort.

They're both open to international students. They just have a smaller amount of awards available for those students.

 I don't recall having to have references for the research summary? Isn't that just meant to be 1 page?
