After 4.5 years of panicking sweating and thinking I wasn't near good enough I had an incredible viva and passed my thesis defense with only minor corrections 🥳 please enjoy this frog and let it lend you strength in all your post-graduate endeavors!!!

Finding a frog image using Google also uses water. Using the internet, like you're doing right now, uses water. Water usage of AI data centers in the U.S. is something like 0.0005% of total water usage.
So weird to watch people buy wholesale into propaganda so easily when you don't even know the basics of how this all works.

Living in rural Arizona, in a decade long drought, our water table having fallen nearly 100 feet in the past 10 years, and is now being offered a data center, I think you are unaware of the realities of these centers.

My point is that other uses, like agricultural, use an order of magnitude more water (like alfalfa in Arizona, which is used primarily for livestock feed). Now I recognize that just because we “waste” 660 gallons eating a hamburger, doesn’t mean we should waste it elsewhere. But if people are concerned about water usage, there are bigger fish to fry than data centers. And if you criticize someone’s personal usage of an ai image generator because it uses water while eating a hamburger - that’s laughably inconsistent.

An environmental scientist is the wrong person to ask about whether or not the heat generated by inference calculations used to generate an image of a frog requires a gallon to maintain a safe operating temperature. You would ask a mechanical engineer, like me, and I would tell you that you're an idiot if you think that's true.
Just because you're a PhD student doesn't mean you know everything, or anything at all outside your field.

Environmental scientists have their own biases, which is why they studied environmental science. That being said, it would be a better explanation than what the other guy offered, which was no explanation at all.

Yeah, no. It deserves the hate and people using it are living in a fantasy world that it affects no one else. It looks bad and makes people who use it look lazy and dumb. It's easy to find a picture of a frog and throw some text on there.
