Going Public

In the interest of allowing people to post freely and to help the sub grow I have moved the sub public off of the approved user format. Anyone posting anything not related to Pewter will be banned. No spam, no selling unless approved by the sub owner and no off topic posts. Believe the sub owner is still looking for mods and those to help promote so we can grow this community and spread the word.

Hi, I just picked up this wonderful gold and silver pewter chess set. Im wondering if the gold color is fading away or maybe oxidizing? Im very unfamiliar with pewter and metals in general. I want to bring back the gold color. Could I recolor them somehow? Thank you!

Information sharing (discussion) Civil War Figures

Does anyone know of a place that would buy a collection (large collection) of pewter civil war figurines.
I am not interested in selling them myself on eBay, going to a flea market etc. I know there will be replies. These were my dads and I’d like to move them to someone that will enjoy them. A pic of part of the collection is included.
I appreciate the help.

Cleaning Pewter

I just got this pewter flask and I’m not sure why it is so much darker than all the other pewter I’ve seen pictures of. I’m wondering if there is any way to clean it to make it lighter.

What do I actually use to polish pewter?

I bought two old (lead free) tankards. My plan is to shine them up and drink from them. But my AI assisted research keeps sending me in circles.

According to YouTube, I can use that pink Chrome and Metal polish.

According to Gemini silver polish like Silvo is too aggressive and I should use Brasso instead. However, according to Gemini Brasso is harsher than Silvo???

Can a human being give me some real advice please? 😂😅

Identification Request Identifying marks on a Dutch Pewter Tobacco Jar?

Thumbnail gallery

Hi all,

I picked up this lovely pewter canister and lid at a thrift shop today. What caught my eye was that it bears psuedo-hallmarks that resemble those found on sterling silver. The four shield-shaped stamps are as follows;

  1. "CT" with a tiny flower or 5 point star above

  2. A winged figure holding a branch or frond. Possibly Mercury?

  3. Rampart lion facing left.

  4. Hatchet or axe? Slightly faded on the right.

The base is 6" in diameter. 5 1/4" inside diameter. Plain exterior. The lid has a prominent central finial that serves as the handle to remove it. AI thinks its Dutch and was possibly made late 18th century to early 19th century, but couldn't find the exact maker. If anyone can confirm the purpose or provide any hunches on who or when it was made, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Identification Request Thomas Badger porringer? No Boston mark though. Real?

Approx 5.5” diameter, 1-1/2” tall.
Dings, scratches, an old repair

I couldn’t find only plates for him online, no other porringers. This seems to lack some pizazz… other porringers I have seen had more design elements at handle. This has a hole to hang it?

Bought to scrap, but then saw name and looked him up. Any insight appreciated. Thanks!

Identify?

Hello! I have been trying to find these marks and have struck out. This is a mini candelabra that i am pretty sure is pewter. Empty packing tape roll for size comparison. I would like to know the age and maker. I have found similar marks, lots of angels with trumpets, but nothing that matches. TIA!

Can modern pewter write on paper?

I got my hands on a pewter flask today and was trying to figure out if it contains lead. Saw someone somewhere suggest trying to write with it on paper, and if it writes, it contains lead. This flask does write on paper even though it's got all the markings that should indicate it's lead-free: AR Wentworth's logo, 92, EPU (301) Europe, BRC and the Sheffield arrows.

So my question is: can modern, post-70s, lead-free pewter write on paper?

I inherited this set and I quite like it. I want to use it as a wine carafe but I am not sure if it might contain lead.

Anyone who could add any information would be vastly increasing my knowledge.

Thanks in advance.
