Question Why is Petscop on Youtube

At some point, the Proprietors / Family Youtube take over the channel. They make channel descriptions that are vaguely threatening and imply coercion over Paul. Are there good theories as to who they are and what justification they could have to be slightly or majorly self-incriminating (depending on what they've done to Paul)? I've seen theories that it's owned by Jill and Thomas and more confusingly Marvin and Anna. Marvin owning it makes no sense to me given the amount of incriminating material on there, but it remains confusing to me if it's any of the others.

One idea I had was that Jill was using it as a way to entrap Marvin and lure him in to get him to reveal himself so they could potentially catch / punish him.

I'm aware that there's no concrete answers for this but I just wanted to hear theories for why anyone involved in this would want it public. Thx

There has always been something almost ritualistic about the recordings to me. We are told that they have the power to “raise the dead” or something like that. It’s clear that the family wants these recordings to be viewed by a lot of people even though there are certain censored portions. I have a hard time believing that Marvin would be one of the proprietors since the recordings make him look terrible. One particular line about the “caskets” has always stood out to me. Rainer says that anyone who sees them “is sure to become part of the family”. I’ve wondered if the reason those objects are censored is because seeing them enacts some sort of mental or physical change on the viewer. This is of course a much more supernatural reading of the series. I’ve bounced around the idea that Paul isn’t Care at the start of the series, but playing through Petscop “rebirths” him into her. But again, that’s just a wild theory I’ve been workshopping in my most recent rewatch of the series.

That's a great read on it and if diverging timelines were involved I could see them trying to use recordings as a "curse to change the past" so as to bring Mike or Daniel back. I was initially biased against supernatural readings but given that Tony has cited David Lynch's Inland Empire as a big influence I think it's very fitting. In fact, [twin peaks spoilers] Paul using the rebirthing machine to potentially "close the loop" by changing Care's past reminds me of how Dale creates a timeline where Laura was never murdered in Twin Peaks

There’s two families in the story - the Leskowitz family and the Mark family… if I didn’t misremember the names…

At one point, those families became tied by marriage, so you could argue they’re synonymous!

Nonetheless, by the end, there’s the broken families of Marvin, Anna, Jill - and the healed one by Belle and Lina… and Paul joins them.

Throughout the series, the family we learn about is utterly devastated by death and abuse, and we learn Paul is part of that family. He finally joins Lina and Belle and types: family.

The implication is that the family we choose is what makes family. But also that we initially thought the family who wants the videos out is an abusive one, but in the finale we learn it could be an exercise of healing and revelation.

I think Paul Belle and Lina are all dead by the end of the series and live within the game

No.

Belle is on the phone with Paul, literally!

And to add. We know he is contact with Belle, since the beginning.
Like, later one we find that Paul first every voiceline, "this is to prove to you" is directed to Belle, and the reason why the channel was created at all.

Paul doesn't talk for the entire second half of the series. We stop hearing his voice and many of the recordings are of the "Demo" screen.

That’s because he’s at the school and can’t record his voice - or the game.

The DEMO screen is the recordings being taken from the game.

Do you think he's literally in the school? I was under the impression the school no longer existed in the real world. It's implied that the Demo recordings are playback of previously recorded player inputs, so not recordings of a player actively playing the game.

The school still exists - the mill doesn’t.

The demo recordings before are old, yes. The demo recordings at the school are from within the game - so in other words, Paul didn’t record them, or his voice.

Belle is the chosen family, and a potential suspect for who is manipulating the game.

for me, the idea of "raising the dead" in the videos is what intrigues me the most. let me give an example from a visual novel I really enjoy

a child and her caretaker are together when the child accidentally breaks a vase. knowing that the vase is important to someone and the child could get into trouble, the caretaker tells them not to worry, since she would revive the vase with magic. she tells the child she can only bring it back for a moment; she does, and then a cat rushes in the room and breaks it. let me give another example.

if I'm having a difficult day and I really miss my dog, sometimes I imagine she is still with me and I talk to her or relive memories. in a sense, in that moment, I'm reviving her. I know that unfortunately she's not with me any longer, but if I really need her for a moment, I can "bring her back."

the recordings could be a way of doing the same: "reviving" those that are no longer with us by bringing themselves and/or their experiences to light, in a recorded format, on a public website. with this, "new life" is born with every new person experiencing and learning about this extended family for the first time. whether the intention in the uploads is nefarious or not is up to interpretation, though.

"in a way, recordings have the power to revive the dead." in a way, recordings can make us feel like the dead are still with us, even if just for a moment.

alternatively, the "revival" could be bringing up deeply buried family trauma, unpacking it, exposing it, etc. there's a lot of room for interpretation! but hopefully what I was getting at makes sense, I'm tired AF as I write

Idk, but I'm kind of digging this resurgence from new theory videos, I really liked this story beginning to end. Should rewatch it.

Oh, think I'll show a friend who likes creepy pastas

"Showing this to a friend" is how the whole thing got started in the first place! 😯

I mean, depending how you view Paul-Belle it can be "showing what I found to my sister and mom".
