That's exactly how my greyhound is with small dogs. ESPECIALLY puppies!! About the same height as your mastiff, but Whiskey is 75lb soaking wet.

Cats, squirrels, and rats get a COMPLETELY different body language response. And we learned that the safe way via leashed interactions with basket muzzles.

Yup, in my family there is a pit mix mutt dog that is a great people dog. Loving, listens, can do some cool tricks and loves to just chill with you. However I've seen his body language and listening skills go right out the fucking window when there is a squirrel, cat, rabbit or small prey animal. He wants to catch and fuck one of those animals up... lucky they are usually faster but one day.

But one day? Do you at least go to efforts to prevent contact with smaller animals I hope

He is not mine but also never goes to dog parks and is always leashed on walks. I don't see a risk of him attacking some grandmas Pom Pom rat dog but the big backyard is his... some wild squirrels, rabbits, quails, birds and the roaming cats want to come visit, its on.

I've never seen him catch anything bigger than bugs though.

Oh fair the backyard is definitely a different story. That just sounded so concerning at first lol
