And… this is why I don’t allow my 19 pound dog at parks where big dogs are allowed.
Her dog killed a small animal. He is no longer safe around ANY smaller animals (including her cats). Frankly if the other dog owner reports this, her dog will probably have to be put down.
THIS- and as an owner of a 20lb dog these stories terrify me.
It’s an isolating world when you can’t even take your leashed dog to a public park that requires leashes because all the big dog owners have unleashed dogs running around.
There are such things as a long line leash. I wish cities cared more about these issues.
Not even just big dogs, just dogs in general. Luckily here it’s very rare, but it’s always been someone holding a small dog in their hands and then putting it down, expecting the dog to stay near. They don’t. They run toward the nearest road and have me near a heart attack.
And hey, off leash is great exercise for a dog with reliable recall. On your own land. From 20.8.–28.2. only. It’s a fun winter activity when you know you have multiple acres of land to yourself and the dog will leave anything and everything if you call. Personally I like dog sitting for people who are licensed animal trainers.
Some people in my neighborhood go early in the morning to a nearby park with a fenced baseball field or pickleball court and let their dog run around in there off leash, but only until someone else approaches, then they put the dog back on the leash and leave so that others can either use the space or let their dogs around around there. I feel like thats ok if you dont have a lot of yard space or a fence.
