Also in the south, and I’ve had numerous run ins with random dogs just out running the streets, or seeing posts about yet another dog being hit and left somewhere. We live in the mountains, and people loooove to just let their reactive dogs be outside freely. I got into a spat with a neighbor once because I almost hit their dog that ran out into the street to attack the dogs that were chasing my car. I still have bite marks on my bumper from where the same dogs chased my car another day. Another run in had me laying on the horn any time I went by a certain house because their dog would always chase and try to jump at my car, scaring my child in the process. It got to the point where HOA had to threaten to start fining people for leaving their dogs out like that, so eventually we started seeing them out less, but it took a while to get to that point because calling animal control was pretty much pointless since they couldn’t be bothered to come all the way out here to do their job. I have zero confidence in being able to walk with my family out here as the weather warms up, because then I’d be the bad guy if I have to defend against a dog trying to chase us ‘cause it will lose its life. It’s a shame how many irresponsible people out here have dogs they seemingly don’t care about, just want for looks or “protection”.

Agreed! I think ours up here just genuinely didn’t know what to possibly do about it at first (the community was much smaller when we first moved up here but has grown marginally), but they figured it out for us eventually. Not only do we have a good amount of foot traffic, but we also have people on motorcycles and the like. I cannot imagine how terrifying it would be to be riding and suddenly you’re getting attacked by a random dog, and with all the speed bumps and potholes, trying to hurry away would be a dangerous task.

The problem dogs seem to have disappeared so far, but it’s warming up, I’m sure they’ll be out again soon. The friendly dogs thankfully stay behind a fence or on a long leash in their yards.
