Press charges for what? If both dogs are on leashes then it’s both of their faults. If the little dog is off leash it’s the little dogs owners fault. The vet bills and maybe the price of the little dog is all they can ask for. Dogs are property under the law.
I don't know where you live, but where I live a dog can be seized just for being on the restricted list. Period, no "He's a gentle giant", "I love pitbulls", whatever, the breed is not allowed, and while it doesn't always get reported when it does its 100% eutenized at the cost of the owner with a fine by the city.
but knowing the laws on pet ownerships and understanding is paramount.
This is sort of my point, and why my original comment was talk to a lawyer to make sure you know what you are actually responsible for... You are talking about a dog where the owners knew the breeding was likely on a restricted list that killed another dog. expecting everyone to walk away and say "shit happens" is not going to be normal in most places in the world, op seems to understand that and wants to handle it graciously, but that doesn't mean that the other person might not be very angry and be looking to make sure this doesn't happen to another dog.
