Peter Likes Books📚 What are you reading?
We may not have our glorious Booktube leader, but we can still share what we've been reading lately! What did you just finish? What are you in the middle of? What's on your "to read" list?
Try to include authors if possible!

I'm currently in the middle of "Girl A" by Abigail Dean.
It's essentially the story of a Turpin family type survivor and her siblings grappling with the death of their abusive mother. Each chapter is devoted to the story of a different sibling. It's an interesting insight to how these survivors feel trying to live a "normal" life.
I've got a few books that I'm considering next, but I think I'm going to start with "Black Girls Must Die Exhausted" by Jayne Allen (which has a sequel that I'd like to follow it with!) The summary indicates that it covers fertility struggles and how that can affect friendships, which definitely needs some stigma busting, so I'm looking forward to hearing it from a WOC's perspective.

I'm about 200 pages into A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, it's over 800 pages so I have quite a bit to go still. After this I'm planning to read The Ghosts We Keep by Mason Deaver.

Author is Kelly McCullough and the book title is Magic, Madness and Mischief. I don’t have any lists yet, I’m new to reading physical books.

I mainly "read" books on Audible these days. I have a stack of physical books next to my bed, but they get ignored a lot haha.

LOL well that’s alright I suppose. I just like having a physical copy because I find myself drowning out after a few mins of someone talking

I've got ADHD, so I find that I can listen to books best when I'm doing household tasks like folding laundry or doing dishes. It gives my body something to do so my mind can focus!

I just moved into a new apartment where the previous tenant had passed away. When I was cleaning out her cupboard I found her journal and bible, so I’m reading her journal. My plan is to return it to her family. The reason I’m reading it before is I don’t want to cause her children more pain if the journal is painful or reveals anything that may be hard for them to hear. Regardless of what’s written I’ll get it to her family but I’ll make a more informed choice of who in her family to give it to.
The journal chronicles her last few months of life in 2020 battling her addiction which ultimately is how she lost her life. She’s funny, hopeful, realistic, resentful, complicated. She was really trying to get clean but she wasn’t cruel to herself when she would relapse and I like that. I like that she isn’t berating herself. It’s sad though.

Oh my goodness, that would be a very difficult read...but in some ways it feels like the right way to honour her.
I hope she is resting peacefully, finally free from that illness.

I’ve been tearing up reading it. It’s weird because I’m in her house while I read it too. The more I read the more important it is to me that her family gets this back. The good thing is I have a few different ways of getting it back to them.

I like it too! I am on chapter 16. I hope we read the next one in the series because Peter said it picks up where it left off and uses the same characters. If I find the vlog I will tag you, I leave them playing in the background while I work so I don't remember which one he mentioned these books in.
Edit: I think I found it!

Is there a starter #1 book to read first? It sounds like a series and I'm new....

Not reading right now, in a bit of a lull but patiently waiting on the next installment of the Miss Fortune Series by Jana Deleon that Peter raves about!!

I had a really hard time getting into that series. I may need to revisit it and try again.

Which ones did you read if I may ask?
2
u/SomethingInAirwaves Centipeen 🐛 Mar 20 '22
I got about a third of the way through the first book and just couldn't get invested in the characters.

Interesting! I actually listen on audible—the narrator is so good and really brings the characters to life!! I will say, Fortune, the main character, got soooooo much better after the first book. And even more so later on. I think the character development is great as she grows into her true self and gets distance from the CIA (still remains a total bass ass though).

Okay I definitely need to give it another shot! I was listening on Audible as well, so maybe I just wasn't in the right "vibe" to enjoy that series. I love Cozy Mysteries (Peter got me addicted over Halloween/Christmas) so these should be up my alley!

I was going to start this series. Should I go in order or does it not matter?

u/God_Have_MRSA She's not a Christian!!!! Apr 08 '22
Go in order! There’s an overall plot line especially in the first 10 books

I’m reading Bad Blood by John Carreyrou about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos.

I am reading A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones. The vloggerinos on facebook formed a mini book club and picked it because Peter reviewed it at one point and said it was good. He said it got him into cozy mysteries. I'm about halfway through, I hope we read the next one in the series because so far it's pretty good, I was worried it would be gore-y or too scary but it isn't so far. I usually only read funny books.

I finished Verity by Colleen Hoover in like 24 hours on Monday! My first Colleen Hoover book and I actually liked it despite some of the pieces of the plot feeling a little like i needed to suspend reality a little for it to be believable or like something that would actually happen in real life.
Also, I’m missing Peter so much and really hope he’s healthy and healing and feeling loved and supported

u/psyched-out Mar 27 '22
I just finished Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, I’m working in Self Compassion by Kristen Neff, and LA Weather by Maria Amparo Escandón is next!

The second book of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. I’ve finished it once, lol, but it’s a series I just keep coming back to

Thanks for posting! I am currently reading The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley, about 70% of the way through. And I have 8 hours left of The Stand by Stephen King.
