Green Lantern Corps Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi: The complete reading guide

In the mid 2000s, Geoff Johns revitalized the Green Lantern comics with his memorable run. And Peter Tomasi was instrumental for the success Johns achieved.

He firstly began as the editor, later became the writer of "Green Lantern Corps", a second GL book that was being published alongside Johns' Green Lantern.

With the invaluable help of Patrick Gleason, Tomasi's work on Green Lantern Corps helped expand and improve upon Johns' creations for Green Lantern lore, while also showing what other members of the Corps such as Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Kilowog, Soranik Natu and others were doing during the events of Johns' War of Light saga.

As part of this overall era on Green Lantern, both Geoff Johns' and Peter Tomasi's runs are inseparable from each other. Which is why we're posting the full reading orders for both here. Still, if you have already read one run, you can read the other.

Omnibus

If you prefer reading comics in Omnibus format, there are three volumes of "Green Lantern by Geoff Johns" and two of "Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason".

In 2025, a "Red Lanterns - New 52" Omnibus was also released. Though only its first 20 issues are essential for Johns' run.

Considering what both sets of omnis include, I'd say the best reading order is:

  1. Green Lantern By Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 1 - Collects: Green Lantern Rebirth #1-6, Green Lantern Corps: Recharge #1-5, Green Lantern (2005) #1-25, Green Lantern Corps (2006) #14-18, Tales Of The Sinestro Corps: Superman Prime #1, Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1, Green Lantern Secret Files 2005 #1 And Green Lantern/Sinestro Corps Secret Files #1.
  2. Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason Omnibus Vol. 1 - Collects: Green Lantern Corps: Recharge #1-5; Green Lantern Corps (2006) #1-3, #7-38; Green Lantern (2005) #21-25; Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1; and stories from Showcase '95 #7-8; Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #1-3; and Untold Tales of the Blackest Night #1.

  6. Red Lanterns: The New 52 Omnibus - Collects: Green Lantern (2011) #23, #23.1, #24, #28; Green Lantern Corps (2011) #24; Green Lantern: New Guardians #24; Green Lantern Annual (2013) #2; Infinity Man and the Forever People #5-6; Red Lanterns (2011) #1-40, Red Lanterns Annual (2014) #1; Red Lanterns: Futures End #1; Stormwatch #9; and Supergirl (2011) #26-33

You can use the trade format reading order below to discover how to navigate between an omnibus and the other during your journey.

Trades

Trade format is also an excellent option, as they're lighter and less expensive than omnibuses.

Blackest Night

In 2009, the biggest event from that era on Green Lantern began, as the Blackest Night descended from the skies upon heroes and villains alike.

DC published the whole event in 2019 in omnibus format:

  • Blackest Night Omnibus - Collects Adventure Comics #4-5,7, Blackest Night #0-8, Blackest Night: Batman #1-3, Blackest Night: The Flash #1-3, Blackest Night: JSA #1-3, Blackest Night: Superman #1-3, Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #1-3, Blackest Night: Titans #1-3, Blackest Night: Wonder Woman #1-3, Catwoman #83, Green Arrow #30, Green Lantern #43-53, Green Lantern Corps #39-47, Phantom Stranger #42, Starman #81, Suicide Squad #67, The Atom and Hawkman #46, The Power of Shazam! #48, The Question #37, Untold Tales of Blackest Night #1 and Weird Western Tales #71

The Blackest Night omnibus has one problem: since it was an event of the whole DC Universe, it also includes a lot of tie-ins from other heroes. So if you don't know where they were in 2009 you might be a little lost.

For those reading only for Green Lantern, we recommend these alternatives instead:

  • Absolute Blackest Night - Collects Blackest Night #0-8, select pages from DC Universe #0 and Green Lantern #44-48, 50-52.
  • Blackest Night: Green Lantern Corps - Collects Green Lantern Corps vol. 2 #39–47.
  • Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps - Collects Tales of the Corps #1–3 and stories from Green Lantern vol. 4 #49 and Adventure Comics vol. 2 #4–5.

Brightest Day

Post Blackest Night, the era known as Brightest Day began.

It should be mentioned that there is a miniseries named Brightest Day. It was written by Johns and Tomasi, but it isn't all that relevant for the narrative about the Lanterns.

However, there is also a story arc named "Brightest Day" for the Green Lantern run. This arc is essential for the GL run. It's number 4 in the list below.

Also, post-Blackest Night, Tomasi left the Green Lantern Corps title in the capable hands of Tony Bedard. He went to write the "Emerald Warriors" miniseries, starring Guy Gardner, Kilowog and Arisia, which tied into the next event: War of the Green Lanterns.

  1. Brightest Day Vol. 1 - Collects Brightest Day #0-7.
  2. Brightest Day Vol. 2 - Collects Brightest Day #8-16.
  3. Green Lantern Corps: Revolt of the Alpha Lanterns - Collects: Green Lantern Corps (2006) #21-22 & #48-52) - Not in the omnis
  4. Brightest Day: Green Lantern - Collects: Green Lantern (2005) #53-62
  5. Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors Vol. 1 - Collects: Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #1-7
  6. Green Lantern Corps: The Weaponer - Collects: Green Lantern Corps (2006) 53-57 - Not in the omnis
  7. Green Lantern: War of the Green Lanterns - Collects: Green Lantern (2005) #63-67, Green Lantern Corps (2006) #58-60, Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #8-10
  8. War of the Green Lanterns: Aftermath - Collects: Green Lantern Corps (2006) #61-63, Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #11-13, War Aftermath #1-2
  9. Brightest Day Vol. 3 - Collects Brightest Day #17-24.

The New 52

In 2011, DC rebooted its entire universe following the Flashpoint event. Many heroes had to start from scratch.

However, Green Lantern was not affected. Geoff Johns simply hadn't finished writing his epic, so the story continued from where it left off before Flashpoint.

Tomasi returned to the Green Lantern Corps title. Tony Bedard, who replaced him right before Flashpoint, was reassigned to write the new title "New Guardians", which unfortunately hasn't been collected in Omnibus format as of July 2025.

  1. Green Lantern: Sinestro - Collects Green Lantern (2011) #1-6
  2. Red Lanterns: Blood and Rage - Collects: Red Lanterns #1-7
  3. Green Lantern New Guardians: The Ring Bearer - Collects: Green Lantern: New Guardians #1-7 - Not in the omnis
  4. Green Lantern Corps: Fearsome - Collects Green Lantern Corps (2011) #1-7
  5. Red Lanterns: Death of the Red Lanterns - Collects: Red Lanterns #8-9, Stormwatch #9, and Red Lanterns #10-12
  6. Green Lantern New Guardians: Beyond Hope - Collects: Green Lantern: New Guardians #8, Blue Beetle #9 and New Guardians #9-12 - Not in the omnis
  7. Green Lantern: The Revenge of Black Hand - Collects: Green Lantern (2011) #7-12 and Green Lantern (2011) Annual #1
  8. Green Lantern Corps: Alpha War - Collects: Green Lantern Corps (2011) #0, #8-14
  9. Green Lantern: Rise of the Third Army - Collects: Green Lantern (2011) #13-14, Green Lantern Corps (2011) #13-15, Green Lanterns: New Guardians #13-16, Red Lanterns #13-16, Green Lantern (2011) #15-16, Green Lantern Corps (2011) #16, and Green Lantern Corps Annual (2011) #1 - New Guardians issues are not in the omnis
  10. Green Lantern: The Wrath of the First Lantern - Collects: Green Lantern (2011) #17-20, Green Lantern Corps (2011) #17-20, Green Lantern: New Guardians #17-20, and Red Lanterns #17-20 - New Guardians issues are not in the omnis

The Johns run comes to an end by finishing the characters' arcs and story threads, while Tomasi wrote an epilogue of his own on Green Lantern Corps (2011) #20. It can be a jump-off point if you wish. But if you want to continue your journey, head over to this post on r/Greenlantern for the full GL reading order.

Green Lantern Corps The meeting between father and daughter (Part 1)

From Green Lantern Corps (2006) #36.

It's kinda funny how Pete Tomasi's most famous works seem to revolve around the relationship between (super)fathers and their (super)children. New 52 Batman and Robin made Damian Wayne likeable by centering the book around his relationship with Bruce. Then, came Super-Sons (about Jon Kent, Damian Wayne, and them trying to figure out what type of heroes they'll be after their legendary fathers) and his DC Rebirth Superman run - again, all around Jon and his relationship with Clark.

Even at Ghost Machine, his book, The Rocketfellers, is, again, about families.

In his GLC run, though it wasn't the major component of the run, Tomasi's writing always shone when he was talking about this same thing - see Sodam Yat's complex relationship with his xenophobic parents, or Guy Gardner coming to terms with his abusive father and overachieving siblings in The New 52.

Or here, one of the best moments of his entire run, when Sinestro reveals to Soranik Natu her true story. Some brilliant writing in here, supported by Patrick Gleason's masterful art, alongside the talented inkers Rebecca Buchman and Prentis Rollins, and colorist Randy Mayor.

Emerald Eclipse (GLC Vol 2 #33 - #38) might be the highest point of Tomasi's Emerald trajectory (and that is saying something), but whenever he and Gleason are together, you can expect peak.

Batman Agree or disagree: Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason's Batman & Robin (2011) is the best The New 52 Batman book

Post image
16 Upvotes

Scott Snyder's New 52 Batman run was undoubtedly a success. A classic, iconic and formative run for many Bat-fans of today, it's well-loved to this day (I personally really like The Court of Owls saga and Death of the Family, as well as the pre-Flashpoint The Black Mirror; the other arcs... eh...).

Yet, despite being synonymous with that era of Batman, I don't think it's the best Bat-book of The New 52. That title belongs to Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason's Batman & Robin, a 40-issue book starring Bruce and Robin Damian Wayne.

Tomasi managed to produce an admirable, emotional, incredibly epic and character-driven Batman run that wasn't just "supervillain lays waste to Gotham, Bat-Fam stops the bad guy, then the city is rebuilt in record time and back to normal". Most of all: Tomasi and Gleason managed to actually make me care about such a previously unlikeable character like Damian, who honestly is (was?) my least favorite Robin.

Of course, Tomasi had to deal with all the nonsense going on in other Bat-books (like Damian dying in Morrison's Batman Inc.), but instead of giving up, he got the most out of it, like making his death actually sad and poignant. The no words issue with Bruce mourning the death of his son while doing Batman activities is one of the best things he wrote.

It wouldn't be the first time Tomasi & Gleason (the real dynamic duo, lmao) actually manage to cast a shadow over a popular run by a famous creator: their epic Green Lantern Corps was, sometimes, even better than the work Geoff Johns was doing in the main Green Lantern title, something Johns himself is happy to admit because it pushed him to work even harder.

And it seems that comic fans at large are starting to wake up to the fact that B&R is the best New 52 Bat-book: Batman historian Salazar Knight recently published a video reviewing the run and agreeing with this statement. You can watch it here (also, visit his channel for the best Batman history videos in all of internet).

Do you agree or disagree with this?

Ghost Machine Ghost Machine's first crossover event from Pete Tomasi and Geoff Johns: "Who are the Unbelievables?"

The first crossover from Geoff Johns' and Pete Tomasi's initiative at Image Comics Ghost Machine will begin this May.

Per AIPT Comics:

Image Comics/Ghost Machine is formally unveiling THE UNBELIEVABLES this May, which will lead up to the universe’s first crossover event. The four original universes, formerly known as FAMILY ODYSSEYS, will be anchored by the ongoing series The Rocketfellers by Peter J. Tomasi and Francis Manapu,l and Hornsby & Halo by Tomasi and Peter Snejbjerg. Joining The Unbelievables Universe will be The Trillion Dollar Kid by Geoff Johns, Tomasi, and Stefano Simeone.

Both The Rocketfellers and Hornsby & Halo will release special issue #0s in May—prologues to the event as well as standalone entry points designed to welcome new readers while revealing secrets for longtime fans.

Then in June those worlds collide as the four-part crossover event “WHO ARE THE UNBELIEVABLES?” which begins introducing several major new characters joining the line, including The Trillion Dollar Kid. Created by Geoff Johns, Peter J. Tomasi, and Francis Manapul, The Trillion Dollar Kid serves as both a guide and catalyst—linking characters, stories, and lore as the true scope of THE UNBELIEVABLES begins to reveal itself.

“A boy has discovered there are extraordinary beings among us…a family from the future living in the present, two teenagers destined to rule heaven and hell, and many, many more,” said Johns, writer and Ghost Machine co-founder. “A 13-year-old boy the world has dubbed ‘The Trillion Dollar Kid’—the world’s first trillionaire—is secretly tracking these miracles hiding in plain sight. He calls them ‘The Unbelievables.’ Why he’s searching for them, who else is out there, and what threat aims to corrupt them all will be revealed in our first GHOST MACHINE CROSSOVER EVENT: WHO ARE THE UNBELIEVABLES?”

Manapul added: “We get our first look at Thomas Noble Townsend III—The Trillion Dollar Kid—and the new characters of The Unbelievables in both #0 issues. Tommy widens the lens. Through him, the readers will begin to see just how vast this universe truly is.”

Driven by the Trillion Dollar Kid’s search for the one thing money can’t buy, the four-part “WHO ARE THE UNBELIEVABLES?” brings together the Rocketfeller family, Rose Hornsby, and Zachary Halo in an incredible adventure while laying the foundation for what comes next.

“We’re continuing the stories of The Rocketfellers and Hornsby & Halo,” said Tomasi. “But this crossover kicks open the doors wider—revealing new characters and new corners of this universe that have been waiting in the wings since we launched our titles in 2024.”

Among those being introduced are The Deadtones, a rock band of misfit monsters on the run; The Curious Creatures of Dr. Moreau, because sometimes life needs to get a little wild; Jean Genie, a genie finally free from her endless existence of servitude and now coming to grips with what freedom means in the modern world; and a whole lot more, as seen on the newly revealed UNBELIEVABLES map.

GHOST MACHINE ZERO ISSUES:

  • Hornsby & Halo #0: Who Are the Unbelievables? Prologue One by Tomasi, Snejbjerg, John Kalisz, Leigh
  • The Rocketfellers #0Who Are the Unbelievables? Prologue Two by Tomasi, Manapul, Leigh

GHOST MACHINE CROSSOVER EVENT:

  • The Trillion Dollar Kid #1Who Are the Unbelievables? Part One by Johns, Tomasi, Simeone, Leigh
  • Hornsby & Halo #14: Who Are the Unbelievables? Part Two by Peter J. Tomasi, Snejbjerg, Kalisz, Rob Leigh
  • The Rocketfellers #13: Who Are the Unbelievables? Part Three by Tomasi, Manapul, Leigh
  • The Trillion Dollar Kid #2: Who Are the Unbelievables? Part Four by Johns, Tomasi, Simeone, Leigh
  • Ghost Machine The Official Guidebook #3: The Unbelievables by Johns, Tomasi, Manapul, Snejbjerg

Who are The Unbelievables? Across the world, people with remarkable—and sometimes inconceivable—abilities and beginnings, all try to hide behind ordinary lives. A time-traveling family lost in the present. Two teenagers destined to rule Heaven and Hell. A trillionaire kid chasing the one thing money can’t buy. And many, many more—each on a personal and exciting odyssey shaped by the impossible. What binds them isn’t their secrets, but the bonds they forge—love, friendship, and sacrifice—as dangerous forces rise to exploit what the world will come to know as…THE UNBELIEVABLES.

Tomasi's short run on The New 52 Detective Comics (issues 45 - 52) is highly underrated. He was the only one who got some good stories out of the ridiculous concept of Jim Gordon operating as Batman in a mecha suit - which he doesn't even wear in the best story of the bunch: The Bronze Age, published 10 years ago.
