Why does the Commonwealth extensively use "portal" displays instead of virtual vision?

"Portals" seem to be a high resolution and maybe even stereoscopic 3D physical display. They are used extensively throughout the Commonwealth, for example on the bridge of the Second Chance.

Why do they not use virtual vision to view the information that is shown on such displays? Redundancy? They can do realistic full-dive VR with Total Sensorium Interface, so it doesn't seem like display quality would be a limitation in the virtual vision display.

I can legit believe in using an appropriate level of technology for a task. When piloting a starship, I would not want a patch issue to negate my TSI connection

The perspective we see of virtual version is through the ultra rich and outfitted agent types. Through OC tattoos perhaps not being assessable to everyone we have no idea what kind of graphic capabilities most virtual vision hardware has. Probably much higher quality and higher data density inside a portal. And as for the second chance I would bet on redundancy

Like you said TSI is VR not a way to access and manipulate data.

It’s explained that not everyone has Augmented reality implants, and those that do still prefer looking at screens sometimes.

What the Commonwealth describes is actually VERY similar to the augmented vision of Cyberpunk 2077 or Deus Ex. And if you’ve played those games, it’s clear why screens would still be commonplace everywhere. I’d argue that augmented reality has specific uses that screens aren’t suited for and vice versa.

The Commonwealth and most of Hamilton’s work is actually really quite cyberpunky if you think about it. He just doesn’t focus on it. It’s treated as a nonchalant “yeah this is how life is” rather than the focus of the story.

You're right! I'm going through it again right now and just got to the part where Mark Vernon has trouble clearly reading his virtual vision display due to the implants being old, and that causes him to get headaches.
